EDITOR'S NOTE

Should We Talk About the Weather?

Should We Talk About the Government?
As you all know, its been raining
and its been cold. When I was
younger, I remember hearing that
talking about the weather was a
good conversation starter to meet
girls. Im not sure that translates to
13-21 year olds. But I have come to
see that talking about the weather is
a good way to meet or connect with
anyone on Folly Beach, especially
when its cold and rainy the
kryptonite of all Folly residents
who have come for the sun and
beachfront fun.
The cold and rain has forced
us who actively socialize to get to
know our neighbors. Frankly, I have
always enjoyed this part of living on
Folly. Winter forces us into closer
proximity. The American way forces
us to talk through social discomfort.
Next thing you know, youve got
new friends. So in that respect, lets
all praise the few days of cold we get
that bring us together. According
to the internet, the average

temperatures in winter on Folly

Beach are 54 degrees in December,
50 degrees in January, 50 degrees in
February, and 56 degrees in March.
(So really, what are we complaining
about?)
Still, I, like everyone else out here,
cant wait for some doggone warm
weather!
Another hot topic of conversation
year-round is Folly Beach politics.
This month our man in City Hall,
Charlie McCarty, gives another
really informative wrap up of
goings-on at City Council and the
Planning Commission. City Council
must have been feeling the weather
in February too, because they got in
and got out, moving through a lot of
material in a relatively short amount
of time.
Yall, weve got a fun issue for
you this month. There are lots
of events happening on Folly in
March. You can read about a few
of them starting on A-1. Our

columnists knocked it out of the

park this month. It was fun to read
about (and it was fun to experience
alongside her) Katie Wells
Baltimore Bomb pie. And Hank and
Anton have a few further thoughts
on the weather.
Id like to end by making a
request of all of our fine Folly
citizens. The Current wants to
get in a little deeper with our full
time residents. No news is too big
or too small for your community
newspaper. Please send anything you
have and want to announce (births,
deaths, community and club events,
questions and concerns) to the email
address below.

Charleston Sup Safaris and Flipper

Finders at 83 Center Street the site
of the check in.
Around 40 people participated in
the Shamrock SUP Race last year,
according to race organizer Jon Ory
of Charleston SUP Safaris.
But its not limited to semi-pros.
Everyone can participate in the
event, says Ory. Elite Racers
mostly from Charleston participate
in the Elite Race, and Recreational
racers make up most of the Rec race.
However, weve had several racers
try stand up paddling the first time
in this race. Kids 12 and under
participate in the kids race, and
anyone willing to put their dog on
a SUP board participate in the Dog
race. Its a fun event where everyone
supports each other and cheers each
other on. The costumes are a major
piece of making the whole event fun
and exciting.
Prizes are awarded for top finisher
in each category. The theme is Go
Green, says Ory, Think green, act
green and wear green in the spirit of
St. Pattys Day and be eligible to win
great prizes!
Paddleboarding is the fastest
growing watersport in the world
now, Ory says. Its really easy to
learn how to SUP on flatwater, and
since were surrounded by water in
the Lowcountry everyones willing
to give it a try. Add beautiful nature
to the mix and everyone is learning
how to SUP.
The entry fees are $45 for Elite
and Recreation Divisions (includes
t-shirt); $25 for Kids 12 and under
and the Dog SUP (which is open
to all ages). SUP boards will be

available for rent for $10 on the day

of the race, courtesy of SUP Safaris.
The after party will be held at Surf
Bar (103 W. Cooper), and offers free
food and entertainment.

CITY COUNCIL

Council Speeds Through Important Decisions

Grants Issued, Races, Contests and Sewer Lines Approved

BY CHARLIE MCCARTY
The Folly Beach City Council
meeting of Feb. 10 moved swiftly.
No work session preceded it.
Councilmembers present included
Eddie Ellis, Dale Stuckey, Tom
Scruggs, D.J. Rich, Pennell
Clamp, and Mayor Tim Goodwin.
Councilmember Sandi Hickman
was absent.
The meeting began with staff
reports to Council. Kevin Whitsett,
Director of Public Works, reported
water and sewer increases are in the
offing, and there are three water
main projects currently in the works.
The Department has also been
changing out aged water meters
among other capital improvement
projects.
Chief Andrew Gilreath reported
on several proactive efforts from
the Public Safety Department.
The Can We See You? program
is encouraging property owners to
ensure residences are displaying
proper number signage to insure
rapid identification in public safety
emergencies. He also discussed the
Departments partnership with
members of the Folly Association of
Businesses in developing training to
insure bartenders and servers know
and understand their responsibilities
and liabilities regarding beverage
service. He indicated the
Department had instituted a 360
degree evaluation program within
the Department, featuring monthly
supervisory evaluations and feedback
to employees, and at the same time,
encouraging officers feedback to
supervisors on ways to improve their
efforts and Department services.
He also reminded everyone of the
two road races in the City during
February, and the Folly Gras Parade.
He reported that Public Safety
Officers Sean Plowman and Matt
Hlavac were expected to complete
the Criminal Justice Academy on
February 13. (Note: they both have
successfully graduated and are back
on the job.) He indicated that he
and Animal Control Officer Alan
Kleinfeld had a productive meeting
with kennel volunteers, including
representatives of Pet Helpers, aimed
at insuring prompt identification,
treatment and recovery of pets in
distress.
Spencer Wetmore, Assistant to
the Mayor, reported that the Citys
website in its new configuration
is now in operation and is being
regularly updated. She said the
public hearing on the Beach
Management Plan on January 27
had produced some solid feedback
from the folks who attended. The
City has also received a draft of the
Economic Impact Study from the
College of Charleston.
In the reviewing of the agenda,

Mayor Goodwin made a motion to

add Atlee Honse and Alicia Kinard
under Personal Appearances. The
motion was approved five to one
(Councilmember Stuckey was
opposed). As amended, the agenda
was then unanimously approved.
Personal Appearances
William Farley appeared on
behalf of Bill and Kim Farley, who
are currently under contract for
the vacant lot at 212 West Ashley
Avenue. He was seeking approval
to link into the sewer line extension
on that lot. Public Works Director
Whitsett said the Farleys would
be responsible for the cost to have
the connection made to the line
across the street from their lot. The
request was approved four to two,
Councilmembers Ellis and Clamp
were opposed to this extension.
Ellison Thomas came before
Council requesting permission to
hold private surf lessons at Fourth
Street East for the third year. The
request was unanimously approved.
Janice Fetter of Half Moon
Outfitters, Mt. Pleasant, came
before Council requesting
permission to host the 2nd
Annual Bodhis Revenge Standup
Paddleboard (SUP) Race for the
Surfrider Foundation in partnership
with Charleston County Parks
and Recreation Commission
(CCPRC) on April 19 from 7 a.m.
to noon. Fetter anticipates 40 to 60
participants. There was discussion
of weather condition contingencies,
and assurances were given that the
race would not interfere with the
franchise operators on the beach. A
vote was taken with all in favor.
Stephen Fernandez of CCPRC
appeared requesting advanced
approval for the 2016 South Atlantic
Life Saving Association Regional
Competition on July 13 and 14. This
is in partnership with the CCPRC
scheduled on July 13 and 14 on
East Side of Pier. He anticipates
approximately 200 life guards from
17 chapters stretched from Virginia
to Florida would be participating.
There being no discussion, Council
approved the request unanimously.
Rick Martinez, 404 East Erie
Avenue, spoke to the need to make
all citizens aware of newly-imposed
restrictions and ordinances. His
concern was apparently based on an
incident in which he was required to
extinguish a controlled outdoor fire
by Public Safety. This related to the
stipulations in the newly-passed Fire
Ordinance. Councilmember Stuckey
indicated that all such newly-passed
and codified ordinances can now
be found on the citys website, a
feature that she had requested. PSD
Deputy Director Steve Mims further
explained features of the new fire

ordinance.
Tony Scruggs appeared to
represent the Queen of Folly
Beach and Edisto Beach Pageant
organization. He introduced Miss
Teen Queen Ashley Pendergist, Miss
Queen of Folly Beach Charlotte
Pinckney, and Mrs. Folly Beach
Kelly Scruggs. He also spoke about
all that the Queens of Folly Beach
do in representing the City. He
requested that the City identify a
place within the City where the
2016 pageant could be held. Mayor
Goodwin indicated Mr. Scruggs
could contact Mary Cunningham,
Clerk of Council, and get assistance
in developing his request.
Atlee Honse came before Council
requesting permission to work on
the expansion of the Harris Teeter
complex on Saturdays from 8 a.m.
to 4 p.m. through September. He
explained most of the work would
be inside the store but some exterior
work will still be required. A vote
was taken with all in favor.
Alicia Kinard appeared on behalf
of her construction firm (Artistic
Design and Construction). The
firm is building a residence at 208
W. Hudson Ave. She requested
permission to cut down and remove
two trees at that site that lie in the
City right-of-way. She indicated
that this would provide the only
viable way to bring power to the
new residence. She provided
photographs to Council and
discussed communications with
SCE&G on the matter. Discussion
ensued as to how and where the
power lines would be installed. A
vote was taken with all in favor.

New Business
Resolution No. R06-15 creating
the Folly Beach Relief Account
to assist citizens in emergency
situations was considered. Mayor
Goodwin noted this account has
been around for years. It was
approved unanimously
Resolution No. R07-15 extending
the current vendor franchise
agreements through December 2015
was approved unanimously without
discussion.
Resolution No. R08-15 awarding
a contract to Palmetto Parking
for the Citys paid parking lots
was discussed. The contract
specifies the City will receive a
minimum of $160,000 in revenue.
Councilmember Rich made a
motion to amend the resolution
to include the language by
March 1, 2015. Councilmember
Scruggs seconded the motion. A
vote was taken on the amendment
with all in favor. A vote was then
taken on the amended resolution
and was approved five to one,
Councilmember Clamp opposing.

Resolution No. R09-15 granting

$500 for Taste of Folly, based
on the Community Promotion
Foundations recommendation for
the distribution of community funds
was discussed. Council Member
Stuckey commented on the benefit
to the general public brought by this
event, and the resolution passed, all
in favor.
Resolution No. R10-15 granting
$500 to Begin with Books, based
on the Community Promotion
Foundations recommendation for
the distribution of community funds
was considered. Councilmember
Stuckey expressed concerns that
the program did not qualify for
Community Promotion funding.
Foundation member Marsha Riggs
explained the process of eligibility,
review and recommendation of the
$500 distribution. The resolution
failed, two to four, Scruggs and
Clamp, Yays; Ellis, Stuckey, Rich,
and Goodwin, Nays.
Resolution No. R11-15
supporting compliance with all
federal and state safety regulations
was approved unanimously, and
preserving the Citys union with
both entities, as well as providing
protection to City employees and
property and the Public.
Resolution No. R12-15 proposing
to upgrade the Citys current
contract with Harris Software
to allow online payments and
electronic bills for water and sewer
accounts was discussed. Spencer
Wetmore reviewed the $170 per
month plan, with a hosting fee
and total professional installation
and set up service charges of
$1,800 (one time). The Council
subsequently approved the resolution
unanimously.
Ordinance No. R01-15 proposed
amending 162.03-15, appeals, of the
Folly Beach Code of Ordinances.
Mayor Goodwin explained the
change to the ordinance submitted
by Mr. Pope stating any appeals to
a Board of Zoning Appeals ruling
will now go to the Circuit Court
of Charleston County. A vote was
taken with all in favor.
Finally, during City Council
Comments, Councilmembers
discussed the loss of valued City
friends and community supporters,
Jerry Pierce and Jim Nicklaus.
Councilmember Rich thanked
everyone participating in the Benefit
for Jerry Pierce.
The Meeting adjourned at 8:01pm.

CITY COUNCIL

Comp Plan Under Review;

Renovations Planned for 11 Center
BY CHARLIE MCCARTY
The Planning Commission
devoted a great deal of effort to
bring up-to-date and revise the
Citys Comprehensive Plan in work
sessions and regular meeting on Feb.
2 and 16. These meetings jointly
involved City Council members
as well. Substantial progress
was noted in developing survey
methodology, and editing major
segments of the plan, including
Natural Resources and Land Use.
Zoning Administrator Aaron Pope
indicated that the Housing piece
will need a major rewrite after he
and Commission members reviewed
input and data projections from the
BCD Council of Governments.
Pope indicated the draft of
the Plan dealing with existing
conditions will be completed
by mid-April, along with the
development of a survey instrument
aimed at getting residents and
property owners feedback. The
second half of the project -- Needs
and Goals Assessments -- will then
be addressed.
In its initial March 2 joint
working session and regular meeting
(both jointly with the City Council),
the Commission hopes to finalize
the survey questions relating to
the Plan, and then segue back to
review plans for the 35-unit Kings
Flats subdivision (at Folly Road
and Sol Legare). In the regular
session following, the Commission
and Council are slated to review
the existing Population segment
of the draft Comprehensive Plan,

and then take up consideration of

preliminary approval of the Kings
Flats subdivision.

Design Review Board

The Design Review Board also
met on Feb. 16 to consider two
design proposals from business
owners. First, John Treevan, new
proprietor of 11 Center Street,
unveiled his plans to renovate and
transform the current facility into
that of a traditional Irish restaurant
and pub. Treevan indicated that
the new fixings and major facade
make-over will begin sometime in
April. The Commission endorsed his
proposals, along with one requested
by Willy Williams, owner of Folly
Beach Adventures on E. Indian Ave.
Williams requested minor additional
signage improvements to allow
better identification of his business
that immediately abuts the Post
Office and the large City bulletin
board.

Sad Loss for Folly Beach

Michel Mike Richard passed
away on March 1 of lung cancer.
He turned 83 on February 12. He

February Fumbles
BY WARREN COBB
Sunday, Feb. 1
Six Swim Suits, Five Fingers of
Discount
The Responding Officer (R/O)
was dispatched to a Center Street
beachwear store around 4 p.m. in
reference to a Shoplifting incident.
Upon arrival, he met with the store
manager who said a woman, her
daughter and another man came
into the store and the mother
purchased some items with her
credit card. While she was doing
this, the 13-year-old daughter
shoplifted six swimsuits and walked
out without paying for them. The
victim said he saw the mother and
daughter get into a car and leave
and the man with them got into
a truck brandished with a gutter
cleaning company logo and phone
number. The R/O made contact
with the man who said he had no
idea the girl was stealing inside.
The man made contact with the
mother and all agreed to bring the
swimsuits back. The victim said
if they were brought back in good
condition, he would decline to press
charges.
Monday, Feb. 2
Comcast Your Money Away
The R/O was dispatched to a
West Hudson residence around 11
a.m. in reference to case of Bank
Fraud. Upon arrival, the 57-yearold victim told the officer she had
tried to sign up for a new Comcast
account, but when she called, she
was diverted to another number.
The person on the other line took
down her information, including
her Social Security Number and
Citi Bank card number, which
later charged her $9.99. The victim
called Comcast a day later and
was advised she did not have an
account. The operator ran her Social
Security Number, which came
back registered to someone named
Mike Ferguson. The investigation
continues.
Thursday, Feb. 5
Suspicious Muttering
The Public Safety Office was
contacted around 9 a.m. by
a 71-year-old concerned male
citizen. The complainant said he
had been at the Kangaroo station
that morning and observed a
woman in her 40s or 50s walking
around saying dont you follow
me, although the man observed
there was no one around she could
be talking to. The complainant
approached the woman and
asked her if she needed help. She
answered, Ill beat youre a**! The
complainant believed the woman
may need assistance and called the
police. Officers were dispatched to
the station, but the subject was gone
on arrival.

the officer also saw two plastic Solo

they were, the subject responded,

was detained and given a field
sobriety test, which he did not pass.
Arrested, the R/O searched the
subjects vehicle and found a roach
with a tiny amount of marijuana
(a small enough amount to avoid
a Simple Possession ticket). The
subject refused to submit to a
Breathalyzer test and was charged
with DUI Refusal and Open

City Initiates New Emergency

Notification System
SPECIAL TO THE CURRENT

The City of Folly Beach has

contracted with ECN CODE
RED (Emergency Communication
Network) to provide Community
Alerting System services. The system
is used to notify all residents in
the event of an emergency or other
information of importance. In order
to receive notifications cellular
phones or e-mail addresses must be
registered.
The Community Alerting System,
also known as Outbound 9-1-1, is an
automated system that calls homes
and businesses to notify them about
serious emergencies. The system
will also direct you to take specific
actions during an emergency. It will
also be used to notify you of other
important information, water main

breaks, power outages, etc.

In the event of an emergency,
public safety or public works
personnel will identify the affected
area and activate the system. It will
automatically call all telephone
numbers within a specified area and
deliver a recorded message.
Uses for the Community Alerting
System include but are not limited
to the following: Amber Alerts,
Missing Person Alerts, Emergency
Evacuations, Local Security and
Crime Alerts, Weather Emergencies,
Hazardous Materials Events, Water
Main Breaks, and Power Outages.
Folly Beach residents and other
interested parties can sign up for the

Cupids Undie Run Streaks Through Folly

PHOTOS BY RICHARD BRENDEL

For the second year in a row, the

Cupids Undie Run brought hundreds
of people to Folly Beach on Valentines
Day to run a short race down Arctic
Avenue, and then back over the beach in
their underwear. The run is a fundraiser
for the Childrens Tumor Foundation,
the worlds largest non-government
organization dedicated to ending
neurofibromatosis through research.
Currently, there is no cure for the
disease, and there are frighteningly few
treatments.
Runs take place simultaneously all
over the country. In 2014, the run raised
over $2.8 Million in donations. If you

missed the 2015

run, make plans
to attend next
year. The run
is supposed to
be a bit absurd.
The organizers
say they put the
hilarity in charity
with hundreds
of half-naked
runners taking
to the streets in
celebration of
their fundraising
for the Childrens
Tumor
Foundation.

Thousands Come Out For Record Folly Gras

It was a beautiful day on Folly

when the culmination of a week
of Mardi Gras celebrations came
to a close at the 8th Annual Folly
Gras Parade. Official estimates of
the crowd size are yet unavailable,
however, preliminary estimates
put the count at close to 12,000
people on Center Street on Feb.
21 definitely the biggest crowd on
Folly so far this year, and one of the
largest crowds of any Folly festival.
This year, Folly Gras expanded to
a weeklong event, with oyster roasts,
concerts, hog roasts and even a
masquerade ball. In case you missed
it, here are a few photos from the

SALT MARSH DIARIES

Februarys Schizophrenic Brother, March

BY ANTON DUMARS

Rain blasts the metal roof in

spasms as windblown trees whip
about just outside in the darkness.
At five in the morning, another
noreaster assaults Folly Island.
As if traveling around the calendar
on vacation, we visit each month
with expectations. Most months
provide a stable dwelling, giving
us little surprise. Sit down and
have a beer, says January. Please
give my best to February and April
when you see them, but dont
mention me to March hes been
on a rampage again. Stoic and
predictable, February delivers cold
and rain. April always paints a
colorful landscape. In between the
two, March remains ill defined and
unpredictable. Some call March
Februarys schizophrenic brother.
By the time March arrives in the
salt marsh, bright green spartina
sprigs push up through the pluff
mud. Last years dead, brittle grass
towers overhead. Soon, Marchs
supersized Perigean flood tides
raft the dead grass away from the

Redfish Riot
BY CAPT. GEOFF BENNETT

Temperatures have been all over

the place this Winter with a string
of nice days followed by days in the
30s. Throughout it all though, it was
possible to catch redfish especially on
the sunny days. Expect the fishing
to markedly improve as the arrival
of Spring brings warmer water
temperatures as well as the emergence
of bait fish.
Having laid low the last few
months to avoid dolphins, redfish
will transform from simply surviving
to becoming predators. With
schools containing up to hundreds
of redfish, the best fishing will be
at low tide when they are exposed.
These fish will still be spooky so
stealth is of upmost importance when

marsh. Ebbing tides take the large

spartina rafts out to sea through the
inlets. From here, wind and waves
distribute the rafts along the beaches
as dune-building wrack.
By March, the annual changing
of the birds has begun. By midMarch, black skimmers appear in
numbers on the mud flats. Royal
terns follow. V-shaped cormorant
formations head back north along
the Atlantic coastline. The Vernal
Equinox overturns night with day,
just as the long-range migrators
begin passing through. Red knots,
black-belly plovers, and whimbrels,
among others, arrive en route from
southern South America. Dressed
in full breeding plumage, they line
the upper beach face and gorge on
freshly laid horseshoe crab eggs.
From here, they head north, on to
food-rich summer nesting grounds
above the Arctic Circle. As if
following the arc of the sun, these
birds chase the longest days from
one pole to the other every year.
Now daylight, oak tree branches
move wildly about against a cold,
gray sky. Rain drips from the metal

roof eaves. Weary of winter, we

optimistically wait out another
week of cold and rain. March,
predictably unpredictable, swings
its temperature 40 degrees in 24
hours. Just like last year, and the
year before that, February sends
us headlong into Marchs chaos.
We move forward in blind faith,

believing that April waits, cloaked

and smiling.

FISHING REPORT
approaching them. It pays to anchor
up when you find a school and wait
for them to return to you instead of
chasing them down.
During this time of year sometimes
these big schools of redfish dont
want anything to do with artificial
lures. When this happens, its time to
soak some cut bait. Ill put chunks of
frozen mullet on size 3/0 circle hooks
and wait until the schools of redfish
swim over it. Put your rod in the rod
holder and leave the rod alone when
you see a fish begin to eat. The circle
hook will do all the work for you and
when your reel starts to sing you are
in business.
With the end of February being
quite cold, well have to see if the
trout bite will start in March.
Working artificial lures slowly

across the bottom will be your best

bet. Plastic lures that imitate small
minnows are a good choice. For
color, stick with grey and silver hues
that most resemble bait. Paired
with a 1/8oz. or 1/4oz. jighead, the
combination should work well when
the trout return.
Its hard to be stealthier than with
a flyrod. This is one of the times of
year when fly fishing can be a very
effective way to target redfish. When
a fly is cast well, it will make only the
slightest splash. Right now, we are
using smaller flies especially the tried
and true white/chartreuse clouser
minnow pattern. Cast to the edges of
the schools and bring the fly slowly
across their noses. The redfish may
be somewhat sluggish but youll still
elicit some dramatic strikes!

See you on the water!

Pets of the Month

These Lovable Pets are Adoptable at Pet Helpers

Blue

Geoffrey

Geoffrey is a 2.5-year-old black

and white male short hair cat. He
has been at Pet Helpers since June
of 2013! Geoffrey is a very curious
cat and his perfect day would
involve climbing and exploring his
new forever home. He can be very
independent, but he is also very
playful. He LOVES the laser pointer
toy he just cant seem to catch
that red dot! He has learned to trust
people, to snuggle up and welcome
human friends to sit with him.
Geoffrey enjoys spending time with
other cats and would enjoy having
a playmate in his new home. If you
are looking for a playful, curious,
younger cat with remaining kitten
qualities then Geoffrey might be the
perfect match for you! All adoptions
include spay/neuter, microchip and
current vaccinations.

Blue is a one-year old Catahoulamix. He has beautiful coloration

which often, and in this case,
coincides genetically with deafness.
Blue is energetic, sweet and silly.
He loves chasing the ball in the
yard and doing anything he can
with people! He is still in the puppy
stages of learning and he will need
an adopter willing to put energy
into his training, but this is typical
with any dog! He can be very
rambunctious when he is playing,
which he loves to do, therefore he
may be better in a house with larger
children that can handle his energy
level. Come meet this adorable guy
at Pet Helpers!
Pet Helpers is a private, non-profit
adoption center and low cost spay and
neuter clinic that serves communities
across the Lowcountry. Part of their
mission is to end the euthanasia of all
adoptable cats and dogs by keeping all
animals until adopted. Stop by 1447
Folly Road sometime and adopt your
new best friend. www.pethelpers.org.

NEWS

New Showers Coming to Washout

FROM W W W.OCEANSURFSHOP.COM

The City of Folly Beach has

some good news for surfers at
The Washout. The City has just
completed the process of building
public changing houses at the east
end of The Washout just north
of the Contest Shack walkover
(approximately 1700 block).
The new facility sits right next to
what surfers call The Pink House.
The Pink House is at the very
eastern end of the Washout.
The area will be handicapped
accessible. There will be parking at
the new changing house area for
handicapped drivers only. There is
also a handicapped ramp at the site
that will offer access to the beach.
The changing area was designed
specifically with surfers in mind,
according to Eric Lutz, Building
Official and Facilities Manager with
the City of Folly Beach. The mens
and womens changing houses will
have sinks, rinse-off showers and
basic toilets. There will also be a
covered changing area, according
to Lutz. The changing area should
be great for getting out of a wet-suit
without showing your rump to every
passing car on East Ashley Ave.
The cold water showers will NOT
be indoors, so dont plan on getting
a fully nude shower experience while
bathing. But it will still be nice to be

able to rinse off before

you race to work after a
morning session.
According to Lutz,
the project has been on
City Councils radar for
a while, and was finally
approved. He also said
there is a landscaping
project in the works
to beautify the new
changing area. The
facility has a planned
opening sometime in

Me and My Pie
BY KATIE WELLS
Ive never
thought too
much about
pie. Growing
up in the
South, pie is
likely to be
found at every
potluck table,
family gathering or Sunday supper,
but its never been my thing.
When pondering my dessert
choices, Ive always chosen cake or
cookie, flan or custard, even clair
or cannoli, over pie. But, its always
around, lurking as a homegrown
choice on the menu.
Why my aversion for pie? The
canned fruit, dripping in syrupy
sweet juice, is the filling from the
pies of my childhood. I spent my
high-school years working in a
cafeteria, doling out the sugary

sweet fruit-filled pies to patrons with

a penchant for complaining about
portion sizes and prices. Thus, I gave
up on pie.
But it turns out there is a world
of pie out there, as I discovered
on a recent trip to Washington,
D.C. The hubs and I were strolling
through a hipster area of town
when we stumbled on a store
called Dangerously Delicious Pies.
Suddenly, I was intrigued by pie. I
wanted to know more.
This was no ordinary pie shop!
They feature savory pies, sweet pies
and pies Ive never even imagined!
My pie-partner-in-crime tried a
savory steak pie. I thought Id just
try a bit of his, but I overheard a
server describing the Baltimore
Bomb, a pie loaded with cookies
melted into a vanilla chess pie. I
needed to try this pie, so I ordered
oneentire pie, by accident.
A miscommunication between

myself and
the server
resulted in
me ordering
an entire
pie and
proceeding
to carry
it around
D.C. with
me for two
days. I
could not
part with
my pie.
First of all, I couldnt part with it
because it was the best damn pie Id
ever tasted! Second, pie isnt cheap.
At least not a pie of this caliber. And
third, this pie was a conversation
starter!
After our pie stop, we made a
wine stop (hello, logical sequence
of events!) At the wine and cheese
stop, everyone wanted to know

about our pie. Later that night, back

at the hotel, the pie was the perfect
late night snack. The next day, as
we made our way through TSA at
the airport, all I had was my purse
and my pie. The normally grumpy
officers were delighted by the sight
of pie going through the security
screening. Our flight attendant went
nuts when he saw we had a box of
pie from Dangerously Delicious
Pies.
So, Ive learned that pie is pretty
awesome. Its delicious, versatile and
a real way to connect with other
people, because apparently, most
people love pie! So, now that Ive
finished my Baltimore Bomb, Im
looking for new pies to try. Share
your favorite pie recipe with me at
katie@kewsolutionsinc.com. Until
then, happy eating!

Bill Noel, author of the popular

Folly Beach Mystery series, will
be holding two book signings for
his latest novel in the series, First
Light, on Folly Beach March 2324. This will be Mr. Noels second
appearance on Folly Beach since
First Light was released in January.
South Carolinas Folly Beach is

Folly Beach is unique, the novels
are quirky, and the locations of
the book signings are unique in
the world of book signings and
events. According to Noel, I prefer
focusing on being where the people
are rather than where books are.
Noel will be signing and
discussing the nine novels at The
Folly Beach Crab Shack on Monday,
March 23 from 5 to 7 p.m.; and
Lost Dog Caf on Tuesday, March
24 from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Id like to touch on something

this month that can be applied to
landscaping and just about anything
we do in life. Im talking, of course,
about technique.
The Japanese word for technique is
gijutsu, and it is the most important
thing in any type of work, or even
things you do
around the house.
The Chinese call
this the Tao,
or way of
Anything worth
doing is worth
doing correctly.
Taking the time
to do things
right is the key
to success. Just
throwing money
and resources at a project will not
even guarantee you success or even
completion.
In the case of landscaping, technique
is the most important tool we have as
human beings. Yes, knowledge is also
very important, but sooner or later
hands-on actual technique will have to
be practiced and learned.
Mowing: This isnt a mindless
practice. Mowing in a different
pattern each time prevents ruts in the
turf. The height you mow will have a
huge impact on the survival of your
turf. Bad mowing means constantly
compensating for bad symptoms. Find
the correct height for your lawn and
make sure your yard person or you are
mowing correctly.
Pruning: Rushing through pruning

with power tools can have several bad

results, whether its weakening the
plant or creating a shape that will need
constant attention to maintain. Handpruning is much more intimate, and
you come to understand each cut and
how it affects the shape in the future.
Planting: Plant depth and placement
is crucial to healthy growth. Research
the depth, light conditions and
spacing for correct
technique.
Leaf blowers:
Mass leaf blowing
can be bad. I often
see leaves that are
blown into bed areas
which then pile up
around the base
of plants getting
stuck, gradually
smothering them
out. Another bad
result of leaf-blowing is clogged up
drainage ditches. Rather, blow the
leaves into a pile for pick-up and
disposal. Or, if youre mulching with
leaf litter spread it with a rake.
If youre like me, you can appreciate
fine workman(person)ship, and we
cant achieve this without technique.
See you next month and Aloha!

Ready to Shed the Winter Layers

BY HANK WEED

On February 27, 2015 I became

an uncle for the first time! My poor
beautiful sister was going through
intense, mind-numbing/blowing
pain while I psyched myself up for
the niece spoilings to come. What
a welcome treat on these frigid,
rainy, Feo-not-open kind of days. A
promise of things to come, a light at
the end of this grey, damp winter.
A babys shining face, stoked on the
future her life will bring her, happy
she survived the cooped up, stircraziness of the womb. Ready to put
on jazz hands and jump right into
life!!! I feel like we all are about to
be reborn
Instead of the sterile glare of the
doctors fluorescent, the warm sun
will warm our brains and hands.
Instead of cold steel forceps, warm
waves will pull us out. All those
people who insist on wearing shorts
year round in an effort of bravado,
can now all sigh a warm breath of
relief at the return of their dignity.
I noticed that morning after that
epic Folly Gras, all the birds out
tweeting and throating with a wild,
slightly panicked abandon. Kinda
like all those Spring Breakers that
are about to descend on our quiet
little hibernating island. It is time.
Spring is that great sector of the year

when we shed all those bulky

clothes, and claustrophobic ideas.
Forget about the worries of freezing
to death in your 3-2 wetsuit, trying
to pee just for a few minutes of
warmth (not worth it).
Soon well be skinnin it on a great
SW Spring swell, foot overhead at
least. Getting to be time to start
working out again as my excuse
for a winter layer wont hold up
as the temperature rises. Time for
new ideas in the kitchen as herbs
and vegetables start sprouting and
thriving. Time to drink lighter
beers instead of the heavy stouts and
porters from the Norse beer halls.
Kind of like the late great Leonard
Nimoy. Shot off into space in his
lacquered coffin, only to be reborn
in a fertile new world. (Miss you
Spock.) Let us go where no man has
gone before (since last spring), into
the light my friends! Into the warm,
inviting, suntan-giving light!!!
Over and out.

When it comes to representing owners of beach properties

for Sale or for Vacation Property Management,

Nobody knows Folly Beach better

According to legend, the adirondack chair was created in the summer of 1903 when Thomas Lee
found a few spare planks and decided to create a comfortable, outdoorsy seat for his vacation home in Westport, New York. The main
idea behind Lees chair was a set of wide, flat arms that could easily hold an iced beverage or a book, and a low-slung seat, perfect for
prime relaxation. The chairs soon became fixtures on the vacation estates of the wealthy and privileged, who opted for a rustic retreat
from the hustle and bustle of the early 1900s. Over the years, this style of chair has come to represent the lazy days of summer, providing
respite, the perfect spot for a good book, a refreshing drink, and a comfortable, deeply-reclined seat. With only minor adjustments to its
original design, the adirondack chair is now a symbol of well-deserved relaxation and unapologetic leisure.

Thats why in 1989 we chose these iconic chairs for our company logo. They represent a lifestyle weve been helping our clients
to achieve for more than 25 years. Sit down, relax, stay a while. Nobody knows the Charleston Coast better
