Introduction
Europe is one of the worlds largest card payment markets. At the end of 2001 there
were more than 500 million internationally badged payment cards in issue across the
region. Europes cardholders used their cards to make purchases and cash
withdrawals with a value of 1.8 trillion euros during 2001. The market continues to
expand, with growth rates for card numbers and card use in the low to mid-teens.
As well as being one of the largest, Europe is on many measures the most complex,
diverse and innovative card payments region in the world:
It combines the developed markets of western Europe with the emerging markets
of central & eastern Europe.
It combines large credit card markets such as the UK with large debit card markets
such as France and Germany.
It houses a variety of domestic interbank organisations, POS and ATM networks
alongside the international schemes.
It is experiencing structural change as the euro and economic integration encourage
cross-border issuing, acquiring and processing.
It is home to most of the major chip card projects, with EMV implementation and a
variety of internet and mobile payment projects underway.
The Yearbook is divided into two volumes:
Volume One - Pan-European Perspective
Volume One examines the market from a pan-European perspective. It is made up of
seven sections:
Section 1 sets the payment card market in context by outlining the main features of
banking in Europe.
Section 2 contrasts the levels of card issuance and use across different countries and
regions within Europe.
Section 3 highlights key themes and trends across the European market:
card numbers and card use in Europe compared with other regions
the position of the international schemes across Europe as a whole
the role and position of the schemes in individual European markets, and
the position of the schemes in central & eastern Europe
key statistics
the banking sector
market infrastructure
