Boston University Statistics Club is excited to present the BUSC Data Analytics Unit.

The Data Analytics Unit is a platform for Boson University students that promotes the culture
of collaboration, creativity, and insight, all for the exploration of statistics and data science topics
and problems. Data Analytics Unit forms a collective of highly motivated aspiring data
scientists who apply and exchange their knowledge and skills to acquire and master new ones.

Statistics and the analysis of data is where mathematics meets the real world. This means that
apart form the theoretical and methodological knowledge, critical thinking is essential. It is true
that having the data available to you for analysis is exciting in itself, and highly accessible in our
day and age. However it is the sharing of analysis, results, and collaboration that induces best
results and brings the most amount of critical thinking applied to a problem. In the real world, in
any industry, in any research or scientific work, at any business, data analytics happens though
collaboration and team work. The Data Analytics Unit serves as the platform that emulates
the real world and therefore serves as an opportunity to gain experience and prepare you for
your future as statisticians, data scientists, researchers, and analysts.

The Data Analytics Unit will meet weekly. During the meeting a predetermined topic
will be explored and related assignments determined and allocated to sub-groups of the Data
Analytics Unit. The list of tentative topics has been put together, however the topics that are
explored and focused on will be determined by the members of the Unit itself. Furthermore the
Unit may collectively decide to venture into data competitions and revolve its activity around the
task of the competitions. BUSC holds accounts with Kaggle and DrivenData providing for an
ample amount of data competition opportunities.
The results of the self-assigned tasks may receive publicity through our web-site
(bustas.com) and our social media outlets that include FB, twitter, and linkedIn. This is the
opportunity for you to showcase your passion for data analytics and begin building a portfolio of
projects. Having accumulated a diverse portfolio and competition experience you will both
enhance you academic experience at BU and prepare yourself for the professional world.

We encourage you to join the Data Analytics Unit and engage with BUSC. Out
mission to is to connect BU students with the world of statistics and to engage members with
activities that would be valuable and rewarding. A platform for collaboration in application of
statistical and data science skills has never before been available to BU students. We are thus
introducing the Data Analytics Unit to create a space where BU students can discover and
pursue their passion for data analysis and its applications to every industry and every discipline
imaginable. This is the place where you will become a better critical thinker, and thus become
better prepared for tackling real world data analysis problems.
Meetings will begin on Friday February 27th, and will take place in CAS 221, 7-8PM.
Henceforth we will meet weekly in CAS 221, 7-8PM. Depending on the depth of a topic, and the
preferences of active members, individual topics may cover 2 to 3 meetings. Some topics may
be allowed just 1 meeting and one week. If a competition is entered it can become the focus of
the groups activities for as long as required.
