1) The proposition: the sum of two even number is even was one of the first propositions we had
to prove. Im including it in my portfolio because I found the process of proving it to be
enjoyable. The proof made me think about mathematics in a totally different way, by forcing
me to explain a concept which would seem obvious to any student.
Proposition :
Proof:

2)The second proposition that I would like to discuss required the skill and knowledge gained
from proving the above proposition. It states that if n is an even number then n^2 is an even
number. Im including this proof because it shows how knowledge gained from previously
proven proof can ad in the solution process of another proof.

Proposition:
Proof:

3)Part of quiz 1 we had to prove that if n is an even integer and m is any integer, then m*n is and
even integer. Again this require the knowledge gained by the first to proofs. I know this proposition
is similar to the last two, but it really help me how some proofs are related and the thought process
it take to prove them, which help me for the rest of the semester.
Proposition:

Proof:

4)Next is proposition 1.17 which states that is an equivalence relation. This proposition
introduces the concept of equivalence relation, which was covered in more detail in chapter 2,
and was extremely useful in solving several proof throughout the semester.

Proposition:

Proof:

5) This semester I decided to take logic and MTH 271. I thought taking them together would
help me understand the logic behind mathematics better. I was right! I including Propsoition
1.22 for this reason. It proves that the contrapositive of a hypothetical statement is equivalent
to the initial statement.

Proposition:

Proof:

6) Moving to chapter 2 proposition 2.9. This proposition demonstrates the power of
propositional logic.

Proposition:

Proof:

7) Proposition 2.12 along with 2.14 prove to be extremely important to the rest of the course
Knowing that = is an equivalence relation and X=Y iff (xXxY) allowed me to use information in
chapter 1 to solve many proof in chapter 2.

Proposition:

Proof:

8) Using the definition 2.41 we were able to prove that a certain equivalence relation exists on a
set Z in exercise 2.42(a). Im including this proof because proving that something is equivalent
to something else seems to be a central theme in the development of a proof, and for its
importance in proving propositions dealing with sets.

Proposition: x equivalent relation symbol y iff x-y is divisible by 5: prove this is an equivalence
relation.
Proof:

9) Im including the forth problem on our midterm because, to me, it demonstrates how I
approach new problems. In an attempt to prove the proposition, I tried to rewrite it in
statement form and show that by applying the logic from chapter one we could prove the
propositions dealing with function. Usually when Im able to relate the different part of
information into a whole, I can solve new problem with ease.

Proposition:

Proof:

10) Proposition 2.54 was one of the more difficult proofs to prove. Just being able to prove this
one mostly on my own with minimal help was an accomplishment.

Proposition:

Proof:

11) My first attempt at proving proposition 3.8 was a success, um, sort of. It turned out to be
incorrect because I used several operation that we hadnt defined yet. After some coaxing from
Dr. Jones I was able to produce a correct proof. Next time Ill pay more attention to the
instructions.

Proposition:
Proof:

12) Since we were proving proposition in groups 3.11 was the first time I attempted to prove a
proportion using induction. Because this is such a powerful method I choose to include it in my
15 results.
Proposition:
Proof:

13) Proposition 3.14 was presented by another group, but I thought it was worth putting on my
list. It shows that the operation + is associative, it doesnt get any more fundamental than that.

Proposition:
Proof:

14) 3.15 is another proof which I presented to the class, it was the first time that in which I had
to write two proofs, so that I might prove one proposition. In order to prove proposition 3.15 a
second proof , proving that 1 is commutative is necessary.

Proposition:
Proof:

15) This last proposition was a group effort, its included here because I ran out of options, no
seriously, it included here because of it complexity. Its a clear example of how everything we
have study relates to each other.
Proposition:
