Values

Values are those beliefs, ideas, standards, and elements of your life that mean the most to
you. They are your foundation, your core building blocks. When these are in place you feel
powerful, happy, satisfied, healthy, whole and complete. When they are missing you are
disempowered, distracted, dissatisfied and upset. Your integrity is out and you suffer.
Values help define who you are, whats important to you and what you stand for. The more
aware you are of your values, the more likely you can create or choose a life and work that
will truly fit you.
1.) As you go through the Values Menu below, consider to what degree each one plays out in
your life. Which ones are most important to you? Put a check by the ones that resonate most
deeply with you. This list is meant to stimulate the brainstorm process and is not meant to be
an exhaustive list. Feel free to add ones that occur to you that are not listed.
2.) Collect the values you have checked off, and any others you might have generated in the
process, and create a separate list on a separate document, so that you can continue to
work with them and organize them as necessary.
3.) Once you have a list of your values, bucket or combine them with other similar or related
values. Then see if there is one of the values in each bucket that epitomizes it for you. Make
that one the title or Core Value (put it in bold and underline at the top of the list).
For example: Travel, Learning, Exploring, Adventure, Variety and Fun could be
bucketed together under the Top Value of Adventure.
Or, Coaching, Training, Mentoring, Leadership, Teaching and Fatherhood could be
bucketed under the Core Value of Leadership.
There is no right Core Value. Just feel which one resonates the most for you and
best represents the group for you.
4.) Create a list of your Core Values
5.) Finally, for each Core Value, write a few words or phrases articulating why this value is so
important to you to honor in your life and work.
