The 33rd Annual Kootenay Lake Easter Dolly Derby

(bull trout) will be held Friday, April 3 through Sunday,
April 5 at Woodbury Resort and Marina.
Due to declining kokanee stocks caused by an overabundance of predators, including bull trout and rainbow
trout, derby participants will be able to weigh in one fish
per day, instead of one fish for the tournament. The winner per ticket rule will still be in effect. Also, the West
Arm of the lake will be excluded for the fishing area.
In past derbies, seven fish were the most ever entered
due to the one fish per ticket rule. All biologists seem to
agree that the shortage of kokanee is directly related to an
overabundance of large predators. Kootenay Lake anglers,
do your part and catch and keep a few dollies this spring!

Music Students Set To

Showcase Talents
Music fans have the opportunity to experience seven

nights of diverse genres and budding talent at the annual
Selkirk College Contemporary Music & Technology Program showcase concerts.
Second year students have been working hard at putting
together their final showcases that play an important role
in their educational journey at Selkirk College. Thorough
preparation has been put into the showcases that begin
Tuesday, March 17 at the Shambhala Music & Performance Hall on Nelsons Tenth Street Campus.
This is an important part of the education that students are getting, says Selkirk College Keyboard Instructor Gilles Parenteau. Putting together these showcases
requires a lot of skills that the audience doesnt see. The
preparation and planning is just as important as the final
product on the evening of the show. Of course, getting to
play in front of a live audience is an exciting opportunity
for the students and a fine way to put the finishing touches
on their education at Selkirk College.
Each performance major student is responsible for putting together a band of classmates and set list for their
individual showcase. They are graded on the preparation
and performance of their final showcase. The shows are as

Community Fund Update
The Community Fund of North Kootenay Lake Society

(CFNKLS) holds nearly $600,000 in endowment funds
that benefit charitable organizations in Kaslo and Area
D. The interest from these endowments generates about
$20,000 in grants to registered charities in support of
social, cultural, recreational, and educational programs,
as well as a bursary supported by the McKinnon Family
Fund. Typical grants range from $500 to $1500 and you
can find our grants eligibility form and guidelines on our
website.
Grant applications for 2015 are available on the CFNKLS
website, nklcommunityfund.org or you may call David
Stewart at 250-353-7600 or e-mail sjdks@kaslo.org Application deadline is Thursday, April 30 and successful applicants will be notified by May 31. The CFNKLS AGM will

This spring equinox on Saturday, March 21 is only one

of several events taking place to herald spring 2015. These
events start with the new moon on Friday, March 20 and a
solar eclipse, two events which should stir up the cosmological dynamics; followed by the spring equinox of equal
day/equal night on Saturday, March 21 and World Water
Day on Sunday, March 22!
If youve been feeling a quickening in your blood, it could
be more than just a touch of spring fever! Theres a lot going
on! We are all influenced by the movement of the planets,
we are made up primarily of water, just see what the moons
pull does to the tides, the evidence is there for us all to see.
So what do we do when we feel the strong movement
of change within us? Do we sit in discomfort and go into
moody reaction? Do we suppress the feelings and fall back
into familiar routines and patterns and pretend we arent
feeling anything? Or do we embrace the changes we are
feeling, and welcome in the movement even if we dont
know where it is leading us?
The new moon, eclipse, equinox these are all events that are
out of our control, even as we are
influenced by them. One thing
we can do is celebrate them! And
that is what we propose to do for
the spring equinox and World
Water Day!
The community of Nelson
loves celebrations, and every
spring equinox there is a celebration walk held at the Lakeside
Labyrinth in Lakeside Rotary
Park (under the Big Orange
Bridge). This year the walk will
be held on Saturday, March 21
at 1 pm. Everyone is invited
to come and walk in community celebration of the return of
spring, and to bless the healing,
life-giving waters that we are so
fortunate to be surrounded with.
The labyrinth has been known,
since ancient times, as a sacred
site that is symbolic of bringing
about transformation and connectedness with ones inner self.
Come and shed the weary winter and find that inner balance
within yourself, just as day and
night find their balance. Bring

Members required (3)
Where a Council has enacted a zoning bylaw, the Local

Government Act requires it to establish a Board of Variance.
The Board of Variance is an avenue for appeal on the
interpretation and the strict application of certain local
government provisions and regulations. The Board functions
separately from Council and has its own authority under the
Act.
This is an uncompensated but light volunteer role suitable
for those experienced in the building code, engineering,
architecture or planning. Volunteers who come forward may
also be considered to act as the Design Review Committee
for the Heritage and Commercial Core Permit area.
Positions will remain open until a Board is appointed.

Life And Death: The Dollhouse
The Dollhouse was an eight year project, undertaken by

Saskatchewan-based installation artist Heather Benning,
which reached completion in 2013. The farmhouse was
located near Sinclair, Manitoba on Highway #2 and had
been abandoned in the late 60s.
For over 18 months Ms Benning restored and furnished
the house to jewel box perfection and then removed the
north facing wall and replaced it with plexiglass. The
house was officially opened to the public June 9, 2007 and
then stood tomb-like as a life-sized dollhouse for six years.
In October of 2012 the house began to show its age; the
foundation was clearly compromised. As a consequence,
in March of 2013, The Dollhouse met its death by fire.
The entire evolution of this breathtaking project is documented by way of film and photo and will be on display at
the Langham Gallery until mid April, when Heather will
deliver an artist talk and film screening at a closing event
in the Langham Theatre, Kaslo Sunday, April 12 from 2 to
3 pm, admission by donation. Do not miss this amazing
exhibition and event!
