The ear is the sense organ that helps us hear sounds around us
The ear is made up of those main parts: outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.
The outer ear consists of pinna and the ear canal.
The outer ear collects sounds.
The sound then travels down the ear canal
The middle ear is an air-filled cavity and consists of the eardrum and three
little bones: hammer, anvil and stirrup.

2. Motivation
Cover your ears with your hans. Can you hear sounds clearly?
How do you think are we able to hear, understand directions and
enjoy beautiful music?
3. Presentation
Tell the story A Trip into the Ear
Mika had a dream. Tiny took her on a trip into the ear. They move with
the sound as it entered the pinna through what looks like a funnel. Tiny said,
This is the outer ear. They slide down the ear canal until they bumped
into the eardrum. Tiny said, We are now in the middle ear. The eardrum
moved very fast. They were not able to pass through the eardrum but they
can see beyond it. They saw three bones the hammer, anvil and stirrup.
They can still see parts of the inner ear. They are the semicircular canals,
the spiral shaped cochlea and the auditory nerve. The cochlea is filled with
liquid. It has many nerve endings. There was a loud sound. Mike was
awakened.

4. Lesson Proper
Activity 1 Parts of

the Ear

Procedure:
Divide the class into three groups representing the three major parts of
the ear
A. Each group will be given a card with the story A Trip into the Ear
B. Identify and list the parts of each major part assigned to them.

C. The group will be guided by the diagram which would be posted during
the activity.
D. Each group will present the parts assigned to them with the aid of the
posted diagram.

Activity 2
The Eardrum
Materials: for each group:
Cardboard tube (from toilet paper)
Balloon, rubber band

Procedure:
1. Stretch the balloon over one end of the cardboard tube.
2. Secure the balloon with the rubber band.
3. Let one member speak into the open end of the tube while one member touches
the balloon.
4. Let each member of the group do the steps from 1-5
5. Let them describe what they felt.
Questions:
1. How is this set-up like your ear?
2. What does the tube represent?
3. What does the stretched rubber band represent?
4. Discussion/Analysis
What are the main parts of the ear?
What is the function of the outer ear?
What does the sound go through after it is collected by the outer ear?
What happens to the bones in the middle ear when sound passes through them?
Which part transfers the sound into the nerves?

5. Generalization
Using the illustration of the ear, can you identify now the different parts of the
ear?
