: Straniero. Latino Barbarus

Viene solitamente accostato a latino balbus,
babulus: balbuziente, come appellativo irridente di
popoli selvaggi, incapaci di parlare correttamente
una lingua civile. La parola barbaro rivela, invece,
una storia di paura del diverso. E di razzismo
perch sempre riferita all'Altro per
giustificarne lo sterminio preventivo e legittimare
la nostra stessa barbarie. Secondo Giovanni
Semerano corrisponde a Sumerico Bar-ba-ra,
Straniero, dalla base sumerica Bar: che si trova
accanto, confinante. Riceve successivamente
lattuale accezione minacciosa e demonizzante assunta da Greci e Romani ed ereditata dalle lingue
moderne - incrociandosi con lAccadico Barbaru
(barburu): Lupo (Proto-Semitico: *Barbar
Lupo, Sciacallo. Arabico: Babr Tigre). Da qui laggettivo Barbarnu: Come un lupo,
simile al lupo, lupesco. Detto di essere disumano e spietato che attacca in branco, rimanda
direttamente all'inglese Barbarian: Barbaro, persona incolta, crudele e brutale.
I tedeschi dicevano gli Ebrei lupi travestiti da agnelli e ne negavano l'umanit per sterminarli con
coscienza. Ma non sono stati gli ultimi a considerare non umani i popoli da discriminare. Tra la
nostra gente si sente spesso dire che arabi, o zingari, o africani, o orientali non sono umani come
noi, e non vanno accolti perch non rispettano le nostre regole di civilt. E fanno paura, come lupi,
quando si aggirano di notte nelle nostre citt. Quando un popolo nega l'umanit di un altro popolo
giustifica ogni propria barbarie contro di esso. E diventa sommamente disumano. Poi c sempre
chi, facendo leva sui sentimenti di paura, d dignit di ideale a tanta brutale ignoranza.
Noi, Italiani, che siamo stati governati per oltre mezzo secolo da partiti religiosi integralisti, noi,
Occidentali, che in nome dell'integralismo calvinista abbiamo scatenato guerre sante in Iraq e in
Afghanistan, ci scandalizziamo se i popoli arabi, per non somigliarci, si fanno rappresentare da
partiti religiosi moderati.
Eppure, senza poterlo dimostrare, sono dell'opinione che le genti semitiche dei primi millenni di
civilt urbana in Mesopotamia definissero Barbarnu, come lupi, proprio quelle orde di illetterati
con i capelli biondi e gli occhi azzurri che si affollavano alle loro frontiere. Provenivano dalle
steppe nebbiose del nord, dove sopravvivevano a stento: aiutati dai lupi stessi nella caccia al veloce
cavallo. Della sua carne si nutrivano, giacch non conoscevano n agricoltura n allevamento n,
tantomeno, scrittura attraverso la quale diffondere la leggendaria lingua Indo-Ariana. Allora, e oggi
alla luce della storia, come dar torto al popolo di Babel che gi cinquemila anni fa partecipava alla
convivenza civile della propria citt con un sistema bicamerale?

It is usually approached to the Latin balbus, babulus: stuttering, as mocking nickname of primitive peoples,
unable to speak correctly a civil language. The word barbarian reveals, however, a history of fear of
difference. And of racism because it is always referred to the Other to justify the preventive extermination
and legitimize our own barbarity. According to Giovanni Semerano the word corresponds to Sumerian Barba-ra, Alien, from the Sumerian base Bar, which is located beside, neighbor. Subsequently receives the
current threatening and demonizing meaning, taken by the Greeks and Romans and inherited by the modern
languages, crossing with the Akkadian Barbaru (Barburu): Wolf (Proto-Semitic: * Barbar Wolf,
Jackal. Arabian: Babr Tiger). From here the adjective Barbarnu: wolf-like, wolflike, like a wolf,
wolfish. Said to an inhuman and ruthless living being, attacking in packs, refers directly to English
Barbarian an uncultured or brutish, cruel, person.
The Germans called the Jews "wolves in sheep's clothing" and denied their humanity to exterminate them
with consciousness. But they were not the last to consider non-human peoples to discriminate. Among our
people we often hear that Arabs or Gypsies, or Africans, or Orientals are not human like us, and are not
acceptable as they do not respect our rules of civility. And they scare, like wolves, when they wander at night
in our cities. when a population denies the humanity of another population it justifies all its own barbarity
against it. And it becomes extremely inhumane. Then there are always those who, relying on feelings of fear,
give dignity of ideal to such brutal ignorance.
We, Italians, that have been governed for more than half a century by religious fundamentalist parties, we,
Westerners, that have unleashed, in the name of fundamentalism Calvinist, holy wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan, we cringe when the Arab people, not to look like us, make themselves be represented by
moderate religious parties.
Yet, without being able to demonstrate, I am of the opinion that the Semitic peoples of the first millennia of
urban civilization in Mesopotamia defined Barbarnu, as wolves, those hordes of illiterate people with blond
hair and blue eyes who flocked to their borders. Came from the misty steppes of the north, where they
survived hardly, helped by the very wolves in the hunting of the fast horse. They used to eat its meat,
because they knew neither agriculture nor livestock, nor, even less, writing through which to spread the
legendary Indo-Aryan language. Then and now in the light of history, as we blame the people of Babel that
five thousand years ago participated in the civil life of their city with a bicameral system?
