Bergmans make a great team off the court

A lot of hard work, effort go into building a basketball program, from both coach, spouse

Scott Bergman heard those words
from his wife, Roxanne after his first season as head coach of the Mainstreeters.
The Mainstreeter girls were coming off
a 6-win season and Scott was already
planning for next season.
This was after a season of daily
practice, evenings in the gym, evenings
at home watching film, scouting trips
every week, elementary basketball on
Saturdays, starting traveling teams for
the young girls said Roxanne.
The list goes on, and shows not just
how dedicated a coach Scott was from
the beginning, but how much dedication it actually takes to turn around a
fledgling program.
Roxanne soon learned the ropes of
being a basketball wife.
I was not a good coachs wife that
first year, she said. I resented all the
time away from home. And it was difficult to hear people criticize my husband. I knew how hard he was working
and the pain of every loss those first
few years.
The wins were scarce, the losses,
many. In his first three seasons Scotts
teams had a 12-55 record.
The wins were so hard to get! said
Roxanne. One of his first Christmas
gifts that first season was a back massager. The knots in his neck were legendary.
Scott finished the first year 6-18,
the second 3-19 and the third 3-18.
Twelve wins in three seasons was not
what he signed up for. But he knew
that the only way to turn the program
around was to put his time in. He
dedicated himself to building a strong
elementary program to help feed his
junior high and high school teams. And
Roxanne was finding out that the sport
wasnt just going to take up a four
month chunk of the winter, but was
going to be a 12-month-a-year job.
Roxanne read the book Purpose
Driven Life by Rick Warren. The
opening sentence is: Its not about
you.
Scott and I always joke its all
about me, and there is more truth
to that than Id like to admit. But by

Gods grace, I was smart enough to

realize that I needed to modify that to,
its all about me unless basketball is
involved, she says with a smile.
It took some time, but the two were
able to adjust to Scotts new schedule
and their new life. Roxanne understood
Scotts passion and supported him.
I knew I needed to get on board,
she said.
But those first few years were tough
because it was hard to comprehend the
committment required to build a successful program. It included forming
traveling teams to play year-round,
to attending summer leagues, hosting basketball camps, scheduling summer rec activities, holding open gyms,
attend Pacesetter, Star of the North
Tournaments, and team camps in
Moorhead, attending coaching clinics,
conference meetings, section meetings.
The list goes onevidence there are
few days or nights off when running a
basketball program.
He bought DVDs every month
and watched them most evenings and
added plays to one of his dozens of
three-ring binders, Roxanne said.
To spend more time with each
other, Roxanne got involved in Scotts
basketball activities. If he were going
to St. Cloud to scout another team,
it meant he was going scouting and
she was going shopping. But soon she
decided to just go scout with him.
Id bring a book and snacks and
not say a word until halftime, she said.
The new system worked well, and
Scotts commitment soon paid off.
After those first three losing seasons he
has strung together nine consecutive
20-win campaigns and brought five
teams to the state tournament.
Of course, Scott hasnt done it
alone. He has a committed staff of
assistants and volunteers who have also
put in countless hours to make the program what it has become.
Its a team effort, said Roxanne.
The assistant coaches throughout his
career have been top notch. Scott has
had so much help from so many volunteers. Ive always told Scott I cant
believe they are willing to give up their
time and often money to help out.

a wealth of basketball knowledge to the

bench. Peschel, whose daughter Kali is
in her junior season at the University
of Iowa, has two more girls coming
up through the program. Freshman
daughter Kelsey is a point guard on
this years state tourney team and Tori,
a seventh grader, is coming up through
the ranks.
I think every head coach in the
state of Minnesota would love to have
Donnie for an assistant, she said.
T.J. Schmiesing is another assistant
who has stepped in this year while
former assistant Emily West started a
family. Schmiesing is a former Streeter
player and also coaches the girls softball team.
But at the top of the program is
Scott, whose vision and commitment
has helped Sauk Centre girls basketball
become one of the top programs in the
state. It hasnt happened by the snap of
his fingers, but by the steady and long
commitment it takes. It helps that he
has a supportive wife by his side, rooting him on.

work, said Scott. This time of year

she always says to me, you take care of
the girls, I got things covered at home.
She understands how passionate I am
about basketball. It takes a special person to be a coachs spouse.
Basketball has been more than just
wins and state tournament appearances
for the Bergmans.
The Sauk Centre community has
been very generous and supportive,
Roxanne said. We have gained so
many wonderful friends and have had
the privilege of spending countless
hours with so many great kids.
Whatever happens at this years
state tournament, come April, Scott
will be back to organizing summer
activities and watching DVDs to
help improve his program. He might
increase his stock of three-ring binders.
They say that behind every great
coach is a loving and supportive spouse.
But Roxanne Bergman isnt behind
her husband. She is by his side, every
step of the way.

Sauk Centre Girls Basketball

Thiesen family embraces Streeters hoops tradition

As the final seconds ticked away

of Friday nights Section 6AA championship game, hugs and high fives
were plentiful as the Sauk Centre Girls
Basketball Team was making a return
to the 2A state tournament.
For the only sister act on the team,
senior Mauren Thiesen was holding
and hugging her younger sister, freshman Maesyn near the Sauk Centre
bench. The upcoming trip to state
means so much.
First of all, it caps off a unique
journey for their family including
parents, Ken and Heather and brother
Macoy all of whom dearly love the
game and who just started calling themselves Streeters last summer. It also
allows them to perform on the same
stage their mother, Heather (Gillis), did
some 26 years ago.
I have this basketball where I write
my goals and one of my goals was
to go to state, Maesyn said. Another
one was to get my college paid for by
basketball.
Although Sauk Centre has punched
their ticket to the state tournament five
of the past six years, the buzz and the
wave of excitement a state trip brings
to a small town are new to the M and
M sisters.
Last year they were taking the court
for the Becker Bulldogs. Mauren was a
two-year starter and Maesyn started as
an eighth grader for Becker. But Ken,
who works in farm business management, felt a little out of place living in
a big town when most of his customers
were rural-based.
Im a farm business manager and
I felt like I was living in suburbia, Ken
said. I grew up in small town USA
and I thought it would be good for
our kids to have the opportunity to be
involved in the FFA chapter and multiple sports.
They had some ties to Sauk Centre.
The Thiesens were familiar with
the Peschel family from Sauk Centre.
Maesyn had played Amateur Athletic
Union (AAU) basketball with Kelsey
Peschel. Don Peschel Kelseys dad
and the Sauk Centre girls basketball
assistant coach and Ken had coached
some teams together.
I had known and admired Scott
Bergman. I liked the way he ran his
program and how he was willing to do
things for the kids. It was a good fit for
what we were looking for, Ken said.
We knew they would get an opportunity to play in a good program.
He also wanted the kids to actively show sheep, something thats been
handed down to Ken from his father.
Both Mauren and Maesyn are now in
FFA.
For me that was important, Ken
said.
Mauren and Maesyn were all
aboard for the move.
I couldnt have been happier
to come here. Making the transition
wasnt difficult. Playing basketball during the summer (with the Sauk Centre
girls) helped. Its turned out pretty

good for me, Mauren said.

The Theisen sisters have made a
big impact on the team.
Maesyn is the starting point guard
and has impressed many basketball
fans with her tenacious defense and
passing skills.
Since she was young, she had the
knack of dribbling with her head up,
Ken said.
She sees the floor so well. She
knows what to do with the ball when
she gets it. From an offensive standpoint shell give you the ball when
youre open, Mauren said.
Mauren, who has scored over 1,000
points in her career, is a terrific team
player and one of the first two players
off the bench.
You have a role and you accept
your role. If its not my duty to start Ill
do my best to be the best bench player,
Mauren said. To me, as long as Im
playing basketball its fine.
I look up to her. She has always
worked so hard and looks at the positive. She can score all the time when she
wants, Maesyn said of her older sister.
On game nights, basketball is the
topic of discussion well beyond when
the final horn blows.
We talk the game, good and bad.
We say way to go and then we continue to teach them the game, Ken
said. We talk basketball all the time.
The Theisens are truly a basketball
family. Their house is full of medals, trophies and photos all dealing
with basketball. When they get a quiet
night they enjoy watching the movies
Hoosiers or Double Teamed.

If they are not talking basketball

they are playing it. Either through
AAU, where Mauren has played for
five years and Maesyn four, just shooting on the driveway or battling their
parents in a game.
Maesyn and me win every time,
Mauren said. We take it upon ourselves and have it inside us to be as
good as we can be.
Ive passed a lot of basketballs in
my life. If they are willing to put in
the extra time the least we can do is
rebound, Heather said.
Going to the state tournament is
an old hat for Ken and Heather, as they
have been spectators for many years.
Being able to watch their kids step out
on the court to showcase their skills is
a dream come true.
The girls set their goals to get
there, but they wanted to be watched
instead of watching. Now they have
that opportunity, Heather said.
Watching her girls compete at
the state tournament will surely bring
back fond memories for Heather, who
played guard on the Storden-Jeffers
powerhouse teams in the late 1980s.
In some of the sectional games, fans
would have to show up an hour and
half before game time to get a seat.
Her dad, Gary, coached Heather.
He held the position at Storden-Jeffers,
a couple small towns in southwestern
Minnesota, for 18 years. He was a
North Dakota native and competed in
the North Dakota State basketball tournament against legendary NBA coach
Phil Jackson. He also played fast pitch
softball with Jackson.

Heathers teams had an

immense amount of success her
junior and senior years, finishing
second in 1988 and one year later
champs, defeating Eden ValleyWatkins in the title game.
I spent a lot of time in the
gym shooting when I was growing
up in Storden-Jeffers, Heather
said. There was never a lot to do.
Her name is still associated
with state basketball lore as she
holds the record for most consecutive shots hit nine in the state
tournament. She hit four in the
end of the semifinal game and in
the state championship she sizzled
dropping each of the five shots she
attempted. Of her nine consecutive, five were 3-point shots.
She has said there are only
two people who can break her
record and thats her kids, Ken
said.
Ken also played basketball, but
baseball was the sport at Windom,
where he attended high school.
His team won the state title as a
junior and placed third in state as
a senior.
These two sports fanatics met
when Ken and a group of his
buddies would travel to StordenJeffers to play in their slow-pitch
softball league. Heather liked to
watch the games.
All of the sudden there was
a lot of Storden-Jeffers gals dating Windom guys, Heather said.
Five or six couples dated and
three got married.
After college, Heather and
Ken set roots in Cedar Mountain.
Heather taught elementary in
Franklin and was the volleyball
coach in Cedar Mountain. Ken
was the ag instructor, FFA advisor
and was a head girls basketball
coach at Cedar Mountain.
The opportunity came and
I thought it would be fun, said
Ken. We started slow, but the
last five years we had 20 wins.
Building a program takes time;
three times we were in the section
final.
Mauren and Maesyn got their
basketball initiation at Cedar
Mountain. They spent countless
hours at practice dribbling and
shooting when Ken was conducting practice. During JV and varsity games, Ken would be at one
end of the bench coaching, and
the girls would be at the other in

charge of warmups and offering

water to the players.
They were raised in a gym,
Ken said.
The Thiesens had great relationships with many players and
several became babysitters and
role models for the three Thiesen
children.
I remember watching older
players. I thought it was so cool
they got to play sports. I wanted
to be like them. I wanted to beat
the biggest rivals, Mauren said. I
wanted to give back. I remember
their kindness (to me). I wanted to
make that impact.
They stayed in Cedar
Mountain until Ken wanted the
challenge of a new job and he
found that near Becker.
That position opened up in
St. Cloud and we took a leap of

faith and I got the farm business

manager job, Ken said.
Mauren was a fourth grader,
Maesyn a first grader and Macoy
was four when they headed north.
Its there where Mauren
played volleyball before switching
to cross-country as a junior. While
at Becker, Heather was teaching at
Saint Cloud State University and
was also an academic advisor at St.
Cloud Technical College.
They lived in Becker for seven
years before moving to Sauk
Centre this past summer.
But couldnt be happier with
the move.
The people, the school and
community have been awesome,
Ken said. Its everything we could
have hoped for.

Every successful team has a fearless leader, a player

who refuses to lose, always gives 100 percent and
demands that everyone else on the team does the same.
For the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters, that player is
Madison Moritz.
A three-sport standout (she also plays volleyball
and softball), Moritz is not always the leader in scoring or rebounding, assists or steals. But she brings an
intensity and mental toughness to every game that is
just as important.
She doesnt lead us in any statistical category, but
she is our best player, said head coach Scott Bergman.
Moritz played through nagging injuries during her
volleyball season and has done the same this basketball
season. She was hurt in the Melrose playoff game and
coach Bergman was concerned she may not be able
to play against Osakis in the sub-section final against
Osakis.
She played more minutes than anybody, he said.
Her toughness is so big for our team.
Moritz is the only player on this years team who
saw action in Sauks last state tournament game. That
game was in March 2013 when the Streeters were
defeated by Minneapolis Washburn. They were one and
done, sent home after a disheartening loss.
The outcome will hopefully be different this time
around. Moritz will bring that memory to the locker
room when Sauk opens up against Norwood-Young
America Wednesday at 2 p.m.
I probably will remind them how awful it feels to
go back to the hotel and know that you dont get to play
again the next day, Moritz said.
The goal is to take it one game at a time, a strategy
the Streeters have had all season long. It has worked as
they have won their past 27 contests.
Now, Moritz and Company want three more.

Taylor Ilgen carries on leadership role despite season-ending injury

Taylor Ilgen entered her senior

basketball season as one of three captains. She was eager to help lead the
Mainstreeters back to the state tournament after losing out in the section finals
the previous year.
But her help on the court came to
an abrupt halt in the teams fifth game of
the season. Playing against Montevideo
she tore her meniscus and ACL in her
knee. Her season and career, as a player,
were over.
My first feeling was disbelief, she
said.
She had reconstructive knee surgery
and was suddenly forced to the sidelines.
But that didnt mean she was no longer
part of the team. That didnt mean she
was no longer a captain and unable to
lead. But her role changed. Instead of
helping on the court, it was now her job
to do whatever she could off the court to
help her team be successful.
During last summer she was our
hardest worker, said head coach Scott
Bergman. She probably put in more
time than anybody.
Ilgen wasnt a double-digit scorer or
supremely gifted playmaker. But she was
a tireless worker and ardent supporter
of her teammates, which earned her the
vote to be one of three captains along
with fellow seniors Madison Moritz and
Jessica Rodenbiker.
A good teammate is someone who
is encouraging, who pushed you to be
better every day and has your back on
and off the court, said Ilgen.
Her leadership hasnt wavered since
her injury. She hasnt felt sorry for herself, and if anything, has reminded her
teammates that anything can happen,
and you never know which game could
be your last.
She never showed she was down,
said Bergman. She has been to every
practice and that has been a real encouragement to the rest of the team.
Despite being relegated to the sidelines, Ilgen is still having the time of her
life. She likes to joke that she went from
player to ball girl to being promoted to
Team Mom.
We have such a close-knit team,
she said. My teammates are all incredibly fun to be around. We always have a
blast when we are together.
Ilgens new role doesnt go unnoticed by her teammates. Fellow captain
Madison Moritz said, I would say that
she is the most supportive person on the
team. You can always hear her cheering
from the bench. With an injury like that

it would be hard to stay positive and she

always has been, shes good at that. She
has been a great captain and leader to all
of us.
When the Streeters defeated New
London-Spicer for the section title and a
return trip back to state, it was Ilgen who
the team pushed forward to receive and
hold the trophy. And nobody had a bigger smile on their face than she did.
The feeling was indescribable, she
said. It was something you only dream
about.
As they head into the state tournament, Ilgen will be on the sidelines ready
to cheer on her teammates, assuming her
role as head cheerleader and, of course,
team mom.
This team has already accomplished
so much, she said. I am so proud of
them all and thankful to have the opportunity to be a part of such a great team.

Double trouble

Freshmen guards carry heavy load for Streeters

Heading into the season, head coach

Scott Bergman thought he may have had
the best freshman point guard tandem in
the state.
Now, heading into the state tournament, he is positive that he does.
Maesyn Thiesen and Kelsey Peschel
arent quite old enough to drive a car, but
they have helped drive the Mainstreeters
to the state tournament with their play
on both ends of the court.
They have exceeded my expectations, said Bergman.
The Streeters are loaded with guards,
but it is usually Thiesen or Peschel bringing the ball up the court a big responsibility for any player much less a freshman. Thiesen played her basketball last
year in Becker while Peschel saw time
on the varsity squad as an eighth grader.
They played summer basketball together,

honing their skills in AAU ball.

They are both similar players, said
Bergman. They both play good defense.
They take care of the ball and have good
passing abilities.
Neither girl is a big scorer, with each
averaging about nine points per game.
Thiesen is more of a drive and dish player
while Peschel is adept at driving and
drawing contact.
When Maesyn is on the move she is
looking to pass, said Bergman. Kelsey
is great at drawing contact once she gets
to the rim.
While inexperience is a concern
when giving freshmen big responsibilities, Bergman said when it comes to basketball experience, he isnt sure anyone
on the team has played as much basketball as Peschel and Thiesen.
Theyve been in a lot of competitive
situations, Bergman said. They certainly dont play like freshmen.
