Road Map #3: More Advanced Expressions/One-Step and Two-Step

Equations
A. More Advanced Expressions __________
We were introduced to expressions in Road Map #2; lets develop our reasoning
with them on a more advanced scale.
Problem 1: Evaluate: 2x + y z2; x = 3, y = 4, z = 5

Problem 2: Evaluate: b2 4ac; a = 1, b = 1, c = 6

Problem 3: Evaluate: 3(m 4n)3; m = 2, n = 1

Problem 4: Evaluate: (x + y)(x y); x =

Problem 5: Evaluate:

B. Absolute Value and Square Roots__________

There are other types of mathematical operations that we will explore in Algebra I.
Two of these are ____________________ and ____________________. Lets touch on
absolute value first.
Definition of Absolute Value
[ The absolute value of a positive number or zero is ____________________. The
absolute value of a negative number is the _______________ of the negative
number (that is, the positive form). ]
The symbol for absolute value is a pair of vertical lines around the number: |3|. For
example, |3| = _____ and |3| = _____.
Lets do a couple of order of operations problems with these first and then apply
them to expressions.
Problem 6: Evaluate: |4| |7|
Solving note: Absolute value signs are like __________. You may not distribute into
them.

Problem 7: Evaluate: 2 |3 + (4)|

Problem 8: Evaluate: 2x |x| + 4; x = 3

Problem 9: Evaluate: |x y| + |y x|; x = 5, y = 8

Problem 10: Evaluate: 2|3x 4y| + 5(6x 7y); x = 2, y = 3

Next, lets discuss square roots, which is the inverse of ____________________.

Here is a table of the first twelve perfect square roots. They should be memorized!

Problem 13: Evaluate:

Solving note: Like absolute value, you are not allowed to distribute into the
_______________.

x(1 y )

6x
( x y )2

Problem 14: Evaluate:

; x = 3, y = 2

C. One-Step and Two-Step Equations__________

Now that we have practice with order of operations and evaluating expressions, its
time to discuss one of the most famous parts of Algebra I: the process of
solving equations.
We will just discuss the most basic of equations that can be solved in either one or
two steps, hence their name.
Problem 15: Solve for x: x + 8 = 12

Problem 16: Solve for y: 3y = 48

Problem 17: Solve for z: z 4 = 6

Problem 18: Solve for w:

w 6

Problem 19: Solve for k: 2k + 3 = 11

Problem 20: Solve for r: 1 + 4r = 19

Problem 21: Solve for p: 3 p = 8
