Reflection

Mr Hyde(qal) is the modification and adaptation of the story Dr Jekyll and Mr

Hyde. The significant of this title is the hallucination of the hero. However, Mr
Hyde(qal) is not the transformation into evil and heartless Mr Hyde. In our movie,
Mr Hyde(qal), Haiqal the protagonist undergoes a serious interpersonal conflict
which leads him to schizophrenia illness. Haiqal hallucinates that he has a
girlfriend named Jane. Jane in his fantasy gives him all he wants such as love,
attention and happiness.
According to National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, schizophrenia
is a major psychiatric disorder, or cluster of disorders, characterised by psychotic
symptoms that alter a person's perception, thoughts, affect, and behaviour.
National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health (2010) also recognises that
stressful incident always paves the way of the beginning of schizophrenia. Haiqal
disability to solve his interpersonal skills causes him to in stress. Besides, people
with schizophrenia often feel that their world has changed, but their interpretation
of this change may not be shared by others. (National Collaborating Centre for
Mental Health, 2010). In the video, Haiqal feels his world has changed and
brightens with the coming of Jane in his mind but he seems weird to other
people.
In the well-known book, Getting to Yes, Fisher and Ury (1981) argue that
handling conflict is a daily occurrence for all of us. People differ and because of
it, they need to negotiate with others about their differences. Conflicts are divided
into different categories. Two of them are interpersonal conflict and intrapersonal
conflict.
Interpersonal conflict is a conflict that occurs between two or more individuals.
Many individual differences lead to interpersonal conflict, including personalities,
culture, attitudes, values, perceptions, and the other differences. (ElsayedElkhouly, 1996 as cited in Elmagri & Eaton, 2001).While intrapersonal conflict

brings the meaning of conflict occurs within an individual because of actual or

perceived pressures from incompatible goals or exceptions (Schermenhorn, et
al.,2005 as cited in Elmagri & Eaton, 2001).
In the video Mr Hyde(qal), the major conflict is interpersonal conflict which leads
to intrapersonal conflict. Interpersonal conflict is a serious problem to many
people as they deeply affect a persons emotions. (Elsayed-Elkhouly, 1996 as
cited in Elmagri & Eaton, 2001). This happens too to Haiqal, the protagonist in
the video. Haiqal in the video cannot accept his bad results. His friends, lecturers
and roommates start to ignore him when he rejects to improve his results.
Therefore, he suffers emotionally of their avoidance. He cannot cope with the
pressure of the interpersonal conflict. He finds his way out of this conflict by
keeping his feeling to himself which brings about hallucination. His hallucination
girlfriend, Jane gives him everything he wants. Thus, he goes through
intrapersonal conflict with himself.
Newstrom & Davis (2002) has listed the factors of interpersonal conflict as
organisational change, different sets of values, threats to values, contrasting
perceptions, lack of trust and personality clashes (individual differences). In this
video, the cause of interpersonal conflict is negative perception. Mr. Nazirul, the
college lecturer has a negative perception towards Haiqal. He has the thought
that Haiqal constant bad result has damaged his good reputation. Therefore, he
has a mind towards him. When he has made such description in the class, his
classmates and roommates are avoiding him. This made them to have different
perception about him. They think that he has not done his best in his quiz.
However, Haiqal perception is different from his friends and lecturers. He cannot
accept that his bad result is his fault. This is where the interpersonal conflict
starts when Haiqal has a different view about his result from his lecturers and
friends.
Worst comes to worst, Haiqal chooses the flight strategy when he encounters
interpersonal conflict. Flight strategy is defines as one physically or mentally run
away from the person one in conflict with. (Vestergaard & Helvard, 2011). He

chooses not to talk or share with anybody about his problem. He has not enough
courage to face the interpersonal conflict which leads him to depression and
eventually falls into hallucination. He has failed using the flight strategy because
it makes him to fall into depressions and hallucinations. He should have been
shared his problems to counsellor before things get worst.
A conflict-resolution model introduced by John Dewey (1910) is also used in the
movie. Besides, third person or mediator is used in the movie. Counsellor Lim in
cooperates John Deweys model in solving the conflict. The first step of the
model is defining the problem. In the movie clip, counsellor Lim is the one who
notice the changes in Haiqals personality. She wants to know the causes of
Haiqal talking to himself. She is actually defining the problem. That is why she
calls him to meet her at the counselling room. In the counselling room, she
listens to his problem and defines the problem in more scientific ways. This is
second steps of the model that is defining the problem in more scientific ways.
When she knows the roots of the problem, she can works out the solutions.
Thus, examining the possible solutions are the following steps.
After much thinking, Counsellor Lim gives him antipsychotic medication to
release his tension.

According to Overview of Schizophrenia, 2004,

antipsychotic medications have greatly improved the outlook for individual

patients. These medications reduce the psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia
and usually allow the patient to function more effectively and appropriately. That
is why she gives him the medicine for him to calm down himself. This is the first
step when encountering such patient before starting a counselling session with
him.
Besides, she also talks to his former best friend, Saiful. She wants him to do
something about his friendship.

Carers, relatives and friends of people with

schizophrenia are important both in the process of assessment and engagement,

and in the long-term successful delivery of effective treatments. (National
Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, 2009). After the heart to heart

discussion, Saiful finally realises his mistakes and becomes Haiqal best friend
again. Haiqal are walking towards the road of recovery.
The strength of our video is that we have a good actor, Haiqal. He has
successfully acted out the behaviours of a schizophrenia patient. Besides, we
have effectively solved the conflict. From the making of the video, I have learnt
that time management is important. We are running out of time to perform our
tasks. However, we manage to finish them before going for Raya holidays. In
addition, I discover that team work is also crucial to enhance the smooth flow of
the video making. Team work acts as a backbone for a team. In this video, I have
also learnt that a counsellor is not allowed to prescribe medicine for patients.
Only qualified physicians can do so.
As a conclusion, I learn that good interpersonal skills are crucial to ensure that
we will not fall into the darkness of depression. Besides, I learn that we must face
any problems or conflicts in a positive ways. In addition, we must help each other
to solve any conflicts in lives. To me, the making of the video is the unforgettable
memories that colours my life. Interpersonal skills are crucial skills that we must
learn to interact with all kinds of people. Lastly, remember to utilise fully your
interpersonal skills to lighten your challenging life.
