Coupons and Coupon Holders

Features and Advantages

The most common and often least expensive method for internal corrosion and
condition monitoring is the use of coupons.
Using the same material as the pipe, the
weight loss or other change of the coupons
will be representative for the condition of
the pipe or vessel.
All CorrOcean coupons are made to
NACE specifications. Each coupon is
certified to show the serial number, weight
(given in grams to four decimal points),
dimensions and material type. Each
coupon is individually packed in inhibited
envelopes with a corrosion free shelf life of
one year (in normal room atmosphere).
CorrOcean coupons and coupon
holders can be used both with CorrOceans
hydraulic access retrieval system and with
any traditional 2" system.

Types of Coupons and Holders

DISC COUPONS are circular discs, often
mounted to be flush with the pipe wall.
Disc coupons are typically used as
weight loss coupons, and must be
used if pigging of the line takes place.
STRIP COUPONS are rectangular plates
which project into the monitored flow.
Because of the larger surface, strip
coupons are better suited for detecting
and quantifying phenomena like
pitting and grooving.
COUPON HOLDERS for placing the appropriate coupon correctly in the flow
(typically top, middle or bottom of
line), and for making the coupons
retrievable.
SPECIALITY COUPONS (See data sheet 114)
are coupons for specific purposes,
such as:
Bio Coupons - for assessment of bio
film
Scale Coupons - for assessment of the
formation and effect of scaling
Weld Coupons - for assessment of
corrosion in connection with welds

Disc Coupons and Holders

Disc coupons and disc coupon holders are typically
used for flush mounting in locations where the coupons
should not extend into the pipe or interfere with the
media flow or pig passage. The coupon and holder
type may also be used for middle of the line or
bottom of the line monitoring.

Disc coupon holders are supplied with fixed or

adjustable length. Available length intervals for
adjustable disc coupon holders are listed below.
The disc coupon holder is delivered with insulator
and mounting screw. Exposed surface area of a disc
coupon is 16,0 cm2.

Strip Coupons and Holders

The projecting strip coupon holder holds two strip
coupons. Strip coupons are made with two mounting
holes to assure a fixed monitoring positioning. Strip
coupons are delivered with insulators. The strip
coupon holder is delivered with fixed length.

The most common type is the 3" strip coupon:

Calculating Coupon Holder And Probe Length

For coupon holders and probes used in flareweld or
flanged access fittings; hydraulic or mechanical, the
length is calculated by CorrOcean based on three
easy steps.

st Step: Position

Position information consists of two parts:

FITTING POSITION, the position of the fitting
on the pipe, described as a clock
position. 12 oclock (top) or 6 oclock
(bottom) are the most common.

When ordering, this information is required for each

fitting or tag no. If you have any questions, please
contact your nearest CorrOcean representative.

MONITORING POSITION, the position of the probe in

the pipe. Top of the line indicates that the probe
does not project (flush with pipe wall), while
bottom of the line indicates that the probe
extends to the opposite pipe wall (irrespective
of fitting position).

nd Step: Type of fitting

will be one out of four options:
