3 Functional description
3.1
Function
CAUTION
Use of other media can result in malfunctions, property damage, or destruction of the
machine.
The spraying valves of the SMS-02 series are particularly designed for the application of flux materials. A
special feature of this valve is the integrated atomizing air valve, which allows an independent regulation of
the purging air time (for cleaning the nozzle and needle point). Depending on the air cap used, this valve
sprays in flat- or roundspray. Depending on the viscosity of the fluid, the application can be adjusted
individually via nozzle dimension, atomizing air pressure and material pressure. The supply of atomizing air,
control air, and material takes place via three hoses.
The SMS-02 Spraying Valve is a pneumatically controlled spraying valve for the application of flux
materials, fats, glues, adhesives, colors etc. The extreme short control air distance, reached by the directly
mounted 5/2-way solenoid valve (17.0.0), gives these valves very fast and exact needle (7.0.0) intermission
cycles. The working piston that is firmly connected to the needle (7.0.0), receives air pressure to the larger
piston surface from the 5/2-way solenoid valve. This opens the needle. When the air pressure to the larger
piston is switched off, the constant air pressure on the smaller piston surface closes the needle.
The spring (9.6.3) is not in function during the normal use of the valve. This is due to the fact that the control
air is permanently present on the smaller working piston area and simultaneously presses the closing spring
(9.6.3) together via the closing piston (9.8.3). In this way, the closing spring cannot hamper the quick closing
times of the needle. Only when the air pressure supply is defective or switched off, this spring closes the
needle. This guarantees that no fluid runs out of the nozzle during working interruptions or air supply failures.
To prevent fluid to form drops instead of being atomized, the SMS-02 works with pre-air and purging-air
(an installed up and down stream to keep the nozzle (2.1.0) clean). Please refer to section 4.3 Adjustment.
Set the working pressure of the atomizing air and fluid pressure according to the required droplet sizes. The
valve can be used for continuous as well as for intermittent use. The control air impulses are transmitted to
the working piston via the 5/2-way solenoid valve (17.0.0).
Depending on the particular application case, it must be ensured that the control air is adjusted to the
number of operating cycles. With 5 intermittents per second and more, the control air has to be at least 5 bar.

4.1
Installation
The valves can be installed in any position. The distance to the surface to be applied with the medium
depends on the spray pattern.
Vibrations of the valve caused by fast intermitting cycles require solid and tight installation. Machine
vibrations to the valves should be avoided.

Adjustment
The amount of material can be regulated via the stroke adjustment of the needle (7.0). A left turn of the regulating knob increases the material amount. A fine precision thread effects a needle rise that results in an
adjustment of 0.5 mm with each turn of the adjusting knob.
IMPORTANT
Do not turn the regulating knob further to the left if no more stops are noticeable while
turning it! The maximum fluid outlet has been reached.
IMPORTANT
Nozzle and needle can be damaged by wrong handling. Only decrease the material
flow (by a right turn of the regulating knob) if material spills out. Do not turn the regulating knob further to the right after the nozzle is closed!
Rev. 2.4

IMPORTANT
The duration of the purging air must be individually adjusted on the exterior of the
spraying valve. By turning the flush-mounted adjusting screw (10.4.0) on the side with
a screw driver, the duration of the purging air can be controlled as follows:

5 Operation
5.1
General information
This device may only be operated if the safety-related equipment is permanently effective and not suspended during operation or altered in its intended effectivity.
IMPORTANT
Please strictly follow the following instructions when planning and constructing application systems!
5.2
Each spraying valve must be equipped with its own pressure regulator for atomizing air.
In case several spraying valves are supplied by one and the same material pressure tank, these
valves must not spray simultaneously.
The supply route for the material between material pressure tank and spraying valve must not exceed
2 m.
If the pause time is a multiple of the spray time, the valve must be sprayed free by pressing the manual switch of PLC control or the auxiliary switch on the 5/2-way solenoid valve (green button) several
times.
After standstills of 15 min. and more, the valve must be sprayed free by pressing the switch 3 to 5
times.
Operating instructions
CAUTION
Never point the jet at people. The wearing of eye protection is strongly recommended.
The spraying process can create noise depending on the air and fluid pressures used.
Ear protection should be worn, if required.
WARNING
Danger caused by flammable, harmful fluid. Always follow the safety instructions on the
container or the safety data sheet for the fluid.
The SMS-02 Spraying Valve usually works with a control air pressure of 5 6 bar. The atomizing air pressure must be less than the material pressure, in order to prevent a backflow of the material. In case high
material pressures are necessary, the safety regulations of the trade association must always be observed.
The valves can be controlled for intermittent or continuous use. According to the individual application, the
control air must be adjusted to the operating cycles and to the higher or lower material pressures. 50 tacts
per second can be reached under appropriate operating conditions (material pressure, control air pressure,
needle stroke, short conductions).
IMPORTANT
A plant-specific setting is required for an optimal adjustment of the application
pattern. Starting values from laboratory tests can be used as a basis. However,
these may need to be adjusted for the specific plant. A combination of the following parameters is necessary: nozzle size, opening time, opening stroke, material
pressure and temperature (if applicable).
It is harmless to leave fluid in the valve during longer standstills if system stays under pressure (no connection to outside air).

General information
WARNING
Before starting any maintenance or repair work, ensure that all air-operated tools are
depressurized and disconnected from the air supply.
Before opening the spray valve it must be disconnected from the air and fluid supply.
Otherwise, ejected components can cause injuries
The SMS-02 Spraying Valves are high precision tools. Always keep clean and observe minimum instructions
to maintain a long life of the valve. We recommend lubricating moveable parts regularly and greasing
threads, especially the nozzle threads, when replacing or cleaning the nozzle. Always use clean and filtered
material only. The control air must also be clean and should be slightly oiled, if necessary. Maintenance also
depends on the individual operating conditions and the type of media used.
6.2
Cleaning
Only use soft brushes for outside cleaning of the nozzle tips. Never use metal tools with sharp edges.
Wash equipment thoroughly after use to remove residues and dirt. Especially, if needle (7.0.0), sealing bush
(6.1.0) or nozzle (2.1.0) are to be exchanged.
6.3
Unscrew locking screw (11.1.0). Take out spring (11.3.0) and pull out closing piston (11.2.0). If necessary,
exchange o-rings (11.1.1 + 11.2.1). Slightly grease replacement parts and re-assemble them in reverse
order.
6.4
Screw out adjusting screw (10.4.0). Screw out pin (10.6.0). With a screw M 3 thread of sufficient length that
is used alternatively for the adjusting screw (10.4.0) pull out the base housing (10.1.0). If necessary, replace
non-return gasket (10.5.0) as well as the o-ring (10.2.0) and o-ring (10.3.0) on the unscrewed regulating

screw (10.4.0). Slightly grease new parts and re-assemble in reverse order.
6.5
Completely screw out ratchet needle lock (9.0.0). Take off collar ring (3.1.0) and air cap (1.1.0). Screw out
nozzle (2.1.0). Carefully push out needle (7.0.0) from the nozzle side to the rear. Slightly grease new parts
and re-assemble in reverse order.
IMPORTANT
Nozzle set = needle, nozzle and aircap (should always be replaced together)!
IMPORTANT
We do not recommended to use old needles because even slightly damaged needle
shafts would immediately cause leakage in the gasket (5.1.0).
6.6
Completely unscrew ratchet needle lock (9.0.3), take off air cap (1.1.0) with collar ring (3.1.0). Screw out
nozzle (2.1.0). Carefully push out needle (7.0.0) towards the back. Then unscrew the sealing bush (6.0.0)
from the thread with a screwdriver.
IMPORTANT
Since the sealing bush will not easily fall through the thread of the main body (4.1.0)
because of the exterior o-ring (5.3.0), it has to be carefully pushed through by means of
a thin metal sheet (0.5 1.0mm) placed between gun body recess and sealing bush.
After passing the thread retainer, it is accessible for taking out of the housing.
6.7
If a complete sealing bush (6.0.0) with an inserted gasket set (5.0.0) is not available to be replaced as a
complete unit, the old gaskets must be removed and replaced with new ones. In order to do so, the sealing
bush must be thoroughly cleaned so that no particles of the previous spraying fluid impair the installation of
the new gaskets. The O-ring seats should be lightly greased with a lubricant (technical Vaseline). First insert
O-ring (6.2.0) into the rear hole of the sealing bush until it reaches the end. Then insert O-ring (5.3.0) into the
outer groove. Mounting the gasket on the fluid side first, place O-ring (5.2.0) into the front retainer bore.
After that, insert gasket (5.1.0) into the center of the O-ring. The shaped gasket (5.1.0) is not symmetrical.
The somewhat wider opening must be positioned to point to the front of the spray valve, i.e. after assembly it
must point towards the nozzle. Slightly grease the sealing bush (6.0.0) and put it back into the main body
(4.1.0) without a turning movement by means of a screwdriver, carefully pushing it through the housing
thread observing the outer O-ring (5.3.0). Then screw the sealing bush carefully into the housing thread
(tighten only slightly).
IMPORTANT
When inserting O-rings and gaskets, do not use any sharp or pointed metallic implements. Especially the gasket is a very precise and sensitive component that is not able
to stand impacts.
6.8
The spray cap must be cleaned with a cloth and special dilution every other day. Please make sure, that no
cloth fibers remain on the nozzle tip.
Every three months the spraying valve must be cleaned with the special dilution in the material area under
consideration of the steps below:

completely open ratchet needle lock (9.0.3) (memorize setting for later use!)
take off air cap (1.1.0/x) and screw out nozzle (2.1.0) with an open-end wrench SW 6
IMPORTANT
Hold the spraying valve downwards when doing so, in order that the medium does not
flow into the air ducts. Collect the escaping medium in a container and dispose of it
appropriately.
clean with a soft brush and the special dilution
reassemble the nozzle and the air cap after cleaning
readjust the setting of the ratchet needle
After system standstills (e.g. breaks overnight or on weekends) a cleaning cycle should be provided for,
which will blow the nozzle free. The cleaning cycle must be activated via the system control.
IMPORTANT
In order to avoid staining, insert a dummy or cloth during the cleaning cycle!
After longer standstills (eg. 2-3 weeks) the complete system must be cleaned prior to a restart. If necessary,
the material hoses and inlays (if any) of the pressure containers must be exchanged.
Every week the material pressure container must be opened in order to stir the color (if there is no electric
stirrer).
Every 3-4 months the material pressure container must be cleaned and the material hoses and inlays must
be exchanged.
Every 6 months the complete system must be cleaned.
