THE FUNCTION OF TAMIL PROVERBS IN TAMIL DRAMA SERIAL

2. INTRODUCTION
2.1 DRAMA
a) The word drama is from old Yunnan that gives a meaning of move or doing
something. The word move refers to a action that consist of artistic elements
which give beauty and pleasure.
b) Drama also gives a meaning of human life which is described by the auther
through his imagination,fantasy or his experience in his social life with his
community (Mana Sikana 1995).
c) Besides that, Manisekaran (1987) has said that dramas in televisyen screened
base on the issue or element as below :

2.2 PROVERBS
a) "A proverb is a short , generally known sentence of the folk which wisdom,
truth, morals, and traditional views in a metaphorical, fixed and memorizable
and which is passed down from generation to generation."
b) "Proverbs are invented in several ways: some are simple apothegms and
platitudes elevated to proverbial dignity, others arise from the symbolic or
metaphoric use of an incident, still other imitate already existing proverbs and
somehow their existence to the condensing of a story or fable."

3. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
a) The Tamil community has started to aside heritage of language which hereditary
passed down from generation to generation in their daily life at present
(Karunakaran, 2005).
b) The study about Tamil proverbs are few and almost rare in Malaysia.

4. RESEARCH QUESTIONS
a) Are there proverbs found in serial drama Vaani Raani and Nadhaswaram?
b) What are the proverbs used in serial drama Vaani Raani and Nadhaswaram?
c) What are the unique of proverbs that reflect in serial drama Vaani Raani and
Nadhaswaram?
5. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
a) Identifying the type of proverbs that are found in serial drama Vaani Raani
and Nadhaswaram.
b) Describe the privileges and the unique of proverbs in serial drama Vaani Raani
and Nadhaswaram.
c) Study the moral values that is contributed by tamil proverbs in serial drama Vaani
Raani and Nadhaswaram.
6.SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
a) Review the position and the function of proverbs in Tamil Society.
b) Identify the importants of proverbs and its usage in daily life.
c) Create awareness to scholar of language to continue the study about the tamil
proverbs which relavant to Tamil Community in future to Benefit.
d) To observe the usage of tamil proverbs in serial drama which archeive objective
relevant to the situation.
e) Help the Tamil community to understand that the dramas are contributing the
Function of proverbs which forgotten by them.

7.LITERATURE REVIEW
7.2 Indoor research
a)Zainal Latif(1996) in his working paper has said " Drama in Education " that
drama has been seen as a tool to deliver lessons .
b)Mohd Taib Osman (1977) as explained that drama is a way of conveying feelings
of young generation which is tempestuous . Through drama life will be criticized
until we get introduction with the character of human and life .
7.3 Outdoor research
a)Drama is a show or acting which done by a human to communicate with another
human Cohn, Ruby (1969) .
b) Ments, Morry Van (1989) in his book " The Effective Use Of Role Play " has
said that drama is a one of type of communication . It is used to convey
message , to produce emotion , discussion and so many reasons .
8.METHODOLOGY
8.1 The method used to collecting data is:
a) Research Library
b) Tax Analysis Research
c) Data Analysis with application of inductive method , deductive method and
Comparative method .
9. THEORETICAL FRAME WORK
a) Theory of Sociolinguistic - In Sociolinguistic there are rules which are not
written about usage of words which are not thought . But it can be understand
clearly .

10.LIMITATION OF THE RESEARCH

a) This research is limited to 2 drama only . The producer is for drama
Vaani Raani is Rathika and Nadhaswaram is Thirumurugan.
b) Only 2 drama will be analyst and will be discussed.
c) The drama serial will be analyst in a period of 01-08-2014 until
30-11-2014 .
d) Drama Vaani Raani and Nadhaswaram is become a choice of researcher because
in that 2 dramas have a lot of proverbs which are used in Malaysia or in India .
11.RESEARCH SAMPLING
a) To conduct the research , all age of Tamil Society people who can speak Tamil
fluently and who can give accurate information will be selected .
b) Example :i) Under age 12 years
ii). Term age 13-21 years
iii). Term age 22-40 years
iv). Term age 41-65 years
About 40 people will be select
12.RESEARCH AREA
a) The research will be done by researcher near Taman Impian Baiduri in
Petaling Jaya . The location of this area is near to the city .
b) The researcher choose the Petaling Jaya because the researcher live there .

13.RESEARCH METHOD
a) Library
i) To collect the materials and relevant data which suitable for research topic .
Through this method the researcher will be finding through books , journals ,
project paper and thesis which have done by other researchers in past .
b) Questionnaire
c) Observation
i)the researcher will be doing observation on Vaani Raani Drama and
Nadhaswaram Drama continuously from 01-08-2014 to 30-11-2014 .
