PAPER3
PRACTICAL
JULY / AUGUST 2007

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
Answer all questions in the spaces provided in this question paper.
You are NOT allowed to start working with the apparatus for the first 15 minutes of the 2
hours allowed for this paper. This time is to enable you to read the question paper and make
sure you have all the chemicals and apparatus that you may need.
All working must be clearly shown where necessary
Mathematical tables and electronic calculators may be used.

1. You are provided with:
Solution D, 1M sodium hydroxide solution.
Solution C, 1M sulphuric acid
You are required to determine the heat of neutralization of sodium hydroxide solution
Procedure
Using a measuring cylinder, measure 50cm3 of solution D and transfer to a 250cm3
lagged beaker. Record the initial temperature of the solution D in the table. Fill burette with
solution C, and measure out 10cm3 portion into solution D in the beaker. Stir well with the
thermometer after every addition and record the highest temperature reached after each
addition. Continue adding the portions until 60cm3 of solution C have been added.

2.

You are provided with:2M sulphuric acid

6 pieces of metal N
You are required to determine the rate of reaction between metal N and Sulphuric acid.
Procedure
Measure 60cm3 of 2M sulphuric acid using 100cm3 measuring cylinder and transfer
into a 100cm3 beaker. Drop a piece of metal N vertically at the centre of the solution, shake and
note time taken for the metal N to disappear. Repeat the same procedure by using 50, 40, 30,
20 and 10cm3 of acid for experiments II, III, IV, V and VI respectively. Dilute the acid in
experiments II, III, IV, V and VI by adding 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50cm3 of distilled water
respectively. Record your results.
