The Scope of Teaching


English as a Second
Language (TESL)
There is no question that English is
becoming increasingly important,
not only in Malaysia but globally. The
demand for qualified and professional
teachers of English as a Second Language
(ESL) is growing daily. The BA in TESL
is a multilevel program which includes
interactive and systematic courses which
expose students to all aspects of Teaching
English as a Second Language (TESL).
As a Department of English with highly
experienced and qualified staff, we have
an excellent understanding of the qualities,
knowledge and attributes that a teacher of
ESL requires. We have ensured that the BA
in TESL includes all the elements that you
will need to be successful and effective.
The BA in TESL (Hons) is designed to
equip students with excellent skills and
capabilities for professional employment
in the field of Teaching English as a Second
Language.

Foundation in TESL
The Department of English at HELP offers a variety of
English courses which cater to local and international
students. Joining our list of reputable courses is the
Foundation in TESL (FTESL) aimed at providing a
wide-ranging foundation for TESL teachers. FTESL
incorporates the latest innovations to make your learning
experience engaging, flexible and comprehensive. A pool
of highly qualified and experienced practitioners in the
field ensure course quality and vitality.

Program Overview

2 long semesters and 1 short semester (1 year)


14 weeks per semester
16 subjects (14 compulsory + 2 HMC subjects)

Entry Requirements
SPM/SPVM with at least 5 credits including English and Bahasa
Malaysia and History or GCE O-Levels with at least 5 credits or
equivalent qualification
Pass the entry interview

English is the lingua franca for commerce, science, communications


and technology. Most of the worlds knowledge is stored in this
language. Malaysians have an advantage in developing these fields if
they are familiar with the language in which the greatest amount of
research is written.

1 HMC subjects

In countries where English is not the mother tongue like Malaysia,


learning English has become not only necessary but essential. It is the
most widely used language all over the world today and it is also the
INTERNET language. Certainly when one is well-versed in the English
language, the information world is open wide for knowledge exploration
and keeping in touch with the latest developments in the world.

There are many opportunities for
graduates of the HELP BA in TESL
(Hons) program wishing to pursue
graduate studies. Students can make
use of the facilities and expertise of
HELP University's ELM Graduate School
and other academic departments.
In addition, HELPs extensive network of
international university partners offers a
wide range of choices for graduate work
and study at premier institutions and
academies.
Graduate employability is always a
concern for both students and potential
employers, so practical applications are
strongly featured in the program, which
links theory and practice through critical
reflection to build work related skills as
well as sound academic knowledge.
Observation and pedagogical practice
(through the Practicum component)
are integral to the development of
profession attributes.
Skills gained from this area of study can
easily be applied in many career areas.
The program helps students to develop
their confidence, interpersonal skills,

team work skills, and communication


skills, and these are highly sought after
by employers. Examples of occupations

Entry Requirements
One of the following:
STPM/A-Level passes in 2 subjects
(except General Paper)
HELP Foundation in TESL
HELP Foundation in Arts or Foundation
in Science
or any other recognised qualification
and
At least Band 4 in the Malaysian
University English Test (MUET)
Credit Transfer/Subject Exemption
Students may apply for Credit Transfer/
Subject Exemption based on the MQA
Guidelines.
