formerhighrankingfemaleexecutive$11.6millioninpunitivedamagesinasexualharassmentcase.
Compensatorydamages,suchaslostsalaryandbenefits,inthecasebroughtbytheformeremployee,AnuchaBrowne
Sanders,arescheduledtobeannouncedThursday.
Mr.Thomasleftthecourtroomindignant,protestinghisinnocence,whileMSGissuedastatementsayingitwas
disappointedwiththeverdict.Bothsaidtheyarecommittedtoanappeal.
Ms.BrowneSandersclaimedthatMr.Thomas,theKnickscoachandpresidentofbasketballoperations,subjectedherto
inappropriateanddegradingbehaviorandunwantedsexualadvances,andthatsoonafterfilingasexualharassmentsuit,
shewasfiredasapunishment.
Duringthetrial,theKnickshavebeenportrayedasinsensitivetowomen,andtheGardenbackofficewasportrayedasa
crossbetweenalockerroomandafrathouse,neitherofwhichweretookeenonmakingfemaleemployeesfeelathome.
Mr.ThomaswasaccusedofregularlycallingMs.BrowneSanders"abitch"and"aho,"andmarriedstarpointguard
StephonMarburyadmittedthathehadsexwithaKnickscollegeinterninhisSUVafterateampartyatastripclub.
Thisisafranchisethatsstrugglingtofinditsway,saidRobertBoland,sportsattorneyandprofessoratNYUsTisch
CenterforHospitality,TourismandSportsManagement.Andnowitsshowntobeanenvironmentthatsextremelyhostile
toeveryonesdaughter,wifeandsister.TheKnickshaveonlyhadoneplayoffappearanceinthepastsixyears.
TapeddepositionsfromMr.Thomas,fromMr.MarburyandfromCablevisionchairmanandMSGbossJamesDolanallhurt
theorganizationscredibility.
ClearlythejurybelievedMs.BrowneSandersmorethantheybelievedtheentireMSGestablishment,saidJeffreyKlein,
chairoftheemploymentlitigationpracticeatlawfirmWeil,Gotshal&Manges.
ItwasMr.Dolanstestimonythatclinchedthecase,Mr.Kleinsaid.TheMSGbossplainlystatedthathefiredMs.Browne
Sandersasaresultofthelawsuit,andthathemadethedecisionwithoutconsultingtherestofmanagement.Thepivot
pointinthetrialwastheretaliation,headded.Theyfiredher,andthenhadtocomeupwithareasonforwhyshewas
fired.
ThejuryawardedMs.BrowneSanders$6millionforputtingupwiththehostileworkenvironment,and$5.6millionin
recognitionthatshewasfiredforspeakingupaboutit.ThejurydirectedthatMr.Dolanbepersonallyresponsibleforpaying
$3millionoftheaward.
