Stranded in a Fairy Land

I was sitting on a chair at my home terrace on Sunday evening while I was thinking
about my flat life. Nothing was challenging in my life: going to college, doing assignments,
cleaning the house, meeting the same people every day, and seeing the same environment.
Those were boring activities that I did every day. I was a kind of girl who did not like to get
into social life and talked about the weather, hung out with friends, being with boyfriend,
those were not really interesting for me. I wanted something else, something that could make
my life wonderful.
Suddenly I heard a loud sound from the backyard, like somethings very heavy fell
down which put me on surprise. There was only me at home, so I dared to see what it was.
There was a big hole and smoke. I was so curious what was in it, so I went to get closer. The
big hole was filled with a big grey stone and many small holes in it. Is it a meteor? I asked
to myself. Then I dared to touch it. Suddenly the world around me seemed like rotated and
my head was dizzy. After some minutes, I could not feel my body. I was fainted.
I woke up and I found myself on a raft. I was confused because all I saw was just
water. I was in the ocean. I didnt even know what had happened, I thought to myself Did
polar melted so fast while I was fainted so the world is drowning, or am I dreaming? I
slapped my cheeks to prove that I was dreaming, but it felt hurt. If I am not dreaming so
where am I? What has happened? I asked to myself though I knew there was no answer. I
decided to calm myself down and tried to accept that it was reality. I saw an oar on the corner
of my raft. I took it and started hitting the water. I didnt know where I should go because all
directions were the same, only water existed, so I just hit the water without knowing where to
go.
After several hopeless hit, I then realized that there was an island, the only land at
about 20 meters away. I tried to reach it, I did not care what country it was, because I did not
want to die in the surface of an ocean and be eaten by any carnivore creature.
I finally arrived in the island. I didnt know whether I was hypnotized or not, but I
loved that island in the first sight. The sand was so soft and white, sometimes it was glittering
beautifully. I saw a leafy wood in front of me, I tried to find a little space so that I could get in
it and see another wonderful scenery. I got into it, and my mouth couldnt stop saying Wow,
wow! It is marvelous. It is amazing. I continued another step and kept looking around to
admire the beauty of nature that this island provided. Suddenly I heard someone was talking.
I tried to find out the source with the aim is to get friend and asking everything about this
island. I kept looking for that someone, but I could not find anything. Maybe he has gone. I

speak to myself in disappointed. Then I heard another one spoke, but I still saw no one. I
turned around and from behind of bush, I saw two crocodiles were lying on the edge of the
lake. To all my surprise, they were talking human language, English. I couldnt move my
legs, my mouth was opened. I winked my eyes many times in case I was wrong. But it was
the same, I saw them so real, I heard them were talking. The voices that I had heard were
theirs. They continued the conversation, and I listened to them from the place where I stood
like a spy.
Dude, did you see the monkeys expression? said a crocodile to his friend. Yeah, I
like when he begged not to be killed, he looked so funny. Another crocodile answered.
Poor him, I actually wanted to let him go, but we needed to have our lunch, didnt
we?
Certainly, he needs to accept how the nature works.
Suddenly, I heard a voice behind my back. Hi! What are you doing? I turned around
and I screamed loudly, I was surprised. There was a rabbit wearing cloth. We both stepped
back to be away each other because of scared. I hid behind a big tree, the rabbit came to see
me closer. I did not do any move, I let the rabbit see me because I was curious as well. He
looked at me from head to foot, to head again and foot again. He began to say, Hi, what are
you?
What? What am I? You dont know what am I?
No I dont. He said
I was astonished why he did not know what kind of creature I was. That should be me
who asked the question because in my world, there was no animal which spoke in human
language. But I tried to be calm and answer his first question. I am human.
human? What is that? he continued asking.
yes, hmm, human is a creature like me. I answered. I could see his confusion, and
then I continued talking to get his attention. My name is Anna. Do you have a name? Or,
what should I call you?
He then shown his smile and replied, Oh, hello Anna, my name is Jackson, you can
call me Jack. He extended his hand to do a shake hand.
Hi Jack, nice to meet you I said.
Nice to meet you too, meat. Dude, I think we have something for dinner. Said the
crocodile before Jackson said a word. They probably hear our scream and attracted to see us.
Anna, run! said Jackson. He took my hand to run away from those crocodiles.
Are they still running after us? he asked after several meters. I dont think so.
Those reptiles cant run as fast as we can. I replied.

Good, now we better go to my house. I see you need some rest. He said while he
was preparing a raft to go the other side of a river.
Alright. I agreed. I really needed some rest and food. I did not ask too much
questions although I wanted to. I needed to find an appropriate time to ask many questions,
right after I got food to charge my energy. That was good that his house was not far from the
river so we could get there faster. We did not have any conversation along we crossed the
river, maybe he knew that I was hungry. So then I just saw the river and its clean water. I
could see the fish as well, they were so beautiful.
We eventually arrived in his house. His house was like a dwarfs house, it was so
small. But I could get in it by lowering my body. I sat in a small chair while he was bringing
me food. I ate it much, though the taste was a bit strange. He then asked me, Feeling better?
Yea I said with a little smile. Thank you.
You have faced a severe day, child. He said without responding my gratitude.
And strange. I added. He just laughed a bit when I said it. Then I asked him the
questions that I had kept. So, what island is this? Isnt here any human, hmm something like
me? And, do all animals in here can talk, I mean do they speak language like you?
Alright, easy, girl. This island is called fairyland. This place has a beautiful nature
and miracle. Animals are not the only creatures, which live here. There are fairies which
make all of the things were possible. We were not able to speak this language at first, but then
a miracle happened. It was such an evolution because we were enforced by the situation. He
explained.
Enforced by situation? I asked for more clarification.
Yes, hhh, okay, im going to tell you the history. Long time ago, our last world was so
wide, peaceful and beautiful. None of the animals could speak a particular language which
could be understood by others like this, we only spoke with every species language, just like
my species, we only understood what our species said, we did not understand what an eagle
or crocodile was saying because this language was only owned by the most powerful creature
called homo sapiens.
Homo sapiens? I interrupted. I was surprised because homo sapiens is the Latin
word for my species, but I did not say anything yet in order not to scared him so I could hear
the whole story.
Yes, homo sapiens. They have the highest intelligence among all creatures in that
world. But they were so greedy, they exploited the nature, they killed animals for their
satisfaction, they destroyed our habitats, they spread fire, poisonous gases, they destroyed our
world. We could not do anything to stop them because they were too strong. But we did not
want to stay there for more time because we wanted to keep our generations alive. Then one
day, one of us accidentally found a big hole consisted of a giant stone. He said that he got into

another world and met fairies. The fairies saw his fear then they made him talk. He told them
about what happened, then the fairies felt sorry to hear his story. They command him to
return to his world and carry other animals to remain in that world with them. He then
returned to the destroyed world and let others know that there was peacefully world to be
lived in. At first it was not easy to convince other animals to follow him, because they could
not understand what he said. Finally, he did a little sacrifice. He pretended to be a victim to
attract predators, meanwhile for herbivore and omnivore animals, he forced them to follow
him. But he eventually did it. The fairies then changed them so they can communicate each
other until now.
Oh, thats a long story. Ahm, have you ever seen how homo sapiens look like? I
asked him with hesitation.
No, because it happened hundreds years ago, I had not born yet. I heard that story
from mouth to mouth. But I am really curious to see that horrible creature.
I couldnt say a word when he said that my species was a horrible creature. I kept
thinking how I could say something about me if he so hated my species.
So, now tell me all about you Anna, where are you from? he suddenly asked me.
I was so confused how to tell him. If I told him the truth, he would be scared of me,
then he would never let me stay in his house anymore. Then I said, I am, I am tired. Can I
have some sleep? Ill tell you the story tomorrow. He seemed disappointed of hearing my
answer. But it was evening, so he let me sleep on his bed. I had more time to think what I
should say to him tomorrow.
I woke very early in the morning, but jack had woken up too. He then accosted me,
Morning, Anna. Sleep well last night?
Morning. Yea, I am fresh now. Hey, you look so neat. Isnt it too early to go
somewhere? I asked curiously.
Oh, Im going to look for food. If I dont go early, I will run out of food, and I cant
eat for today. Do you want to come with me or just stay?
I decided to come with him. I wanted to see other animals as well to get closer with
them. Okay, Im in. I said. I then prepared myself to go with him. He and his neighbors
needed to cross the river in order to get the food because here they could not plant food out.
There are too many houses here.
It was dawn, around 4:00 a.m., and I could see his neighbors were walking to get
rafts. They looked at me curiously. I just smiled to them. We got into Jacks raft. The water
was so calm and the air seemed coolest at that time. I thought it would have been quiet but
the birds were up chattering away as if to say, Where have you been, did you sleep in? we
have been up working for an hour already! I would get lost in the beauty of nature were it
not for the subtle plunk of his oar hitting the water. It was during that quiet time I was able to

hear the fairies sound. Their voices were so melodious. They were flying right above us with
beautiful dancing. Some of them were chasing each other.
They are fairies, arent they beautiful? Asked Jack, interrupted my amazement.
Yes, they are very beautiful. I replied in admiring intonation.
You will see more in the wood. They live there, helping to grow plants.
I couldnt wait to see them. Although I was worried simultaneously if they know who
I was. But soon I threw away my anxiety.
Finally we arrived at the wood, there were so crowded. I kept following Jackson to
help him finding the food. Many animals looked at me wondering. Sometimes they
whispered to their friend. I kept smiling to show my respect. But Jackson felt uncomfortable
because they kept looking at me curiously. So Jackson reached a higher hill to announce who
I was.
Morning, ladies and gentlemen. I am sure you are wondering whos with me. Shes
my new friend. Her name is Anna. She is a human.
I was afraid when he said that I was human. I was afraid if there was someone who
knew me, that I was homo sapiens. But fortunately, no one knew it, they gave me good
response. They only knew homo sapiens in their legend in many decades ago, they had never
seen it directly. I just smiled at them and nodded my head as my introduction. They stared at
me for a while, then they got closer to me. They started touching my skin, my dress, my hair.
I knew what they were thinking, I was a strange novel creature. They liked me, especially the
children. But not all animals liked me, there was someone who saw me in hatred. His name
was peter. Jackson said that he was not a friendly person. But I didnt pay much attention to
him because many animals were around me and they were happy of my arrival.
Feeling better? asked Jackson suddenly.
Yeah, much better. Thanks jack. I said in glad.
Anytime. Come on, lets meet fairies. Lets see what theyll give to you. He said.
Okay. I agreed. Im sorry I need to go guys. See you later. I said to animals
around me. Then I left them.
Anna, you havent answered my question, where are you from? Asked Jackson.
My mouth was stuck when he asked me that question again. Then I said, Is that
important?
Sure, youre my friend, I want to know more about you. Besides Im wondering why
you can speak like us before you met the fairies. Do you mind Anna? he said.

We had arrived in the fairies shelter before I answered his question. Is this it? I
asked in amazement, ignoring Jacksons question.
Yes, this is it. He said. He seemed not mind of my ignorance.
When those fairies saw me they were surprised. They went out from the shelter and
spread away. Their faces showed their anger. They then take Jackson away from side.
Why? What happened? he asked in fear. The fairies were covering him against me.
The fairies told him about who I was. Jackson was surprised, disappointed, and angry
simultaneously. You? Now I know why you never answered my question. Youre such a big
fat liar. What do you want from us? You want to destroy this world and repeat the history?
he said in anger.
No, Jack. I didnt mean to make any harm in here. I swear. I was afraid of telling you
the truth, but none of my words was a lie. Please listen to my explanation.
They still didnt want to listen to me, but I didnt care. I insisted to tell them the story
how I came here. They finally listened to me, but they were uncertain whether I told them the
true or not. They were sure that the stone was protected from human touch so that it was
impossible for human to get here. But they assumed that the protection layer was weakened
or broken. Maybe it was the reason why I got into the ocean first and not to the island
directly. They looked at each other, waiting someone to say what to do, but no one said a
word.
Lets bring her to the other animals, maybe they know what to do. Said Jackson.
The fairies then came to me and brought me to the other animals. Jackson announced
to all animals about who I was. They were surprised of hearing it. Some of them were afraid.
But I told them that I came in peace, and I never planned to come here, it was an accident. I
could see their confusion.
Why dont we just bury her alive? We must revenge what her ancestor had done to
ours. said peter, broke the quite.
What? No, please. I begged to them not to bury me alive.
Peter, watch your words. We are civilized creatures. Said one of the fairies.
I was glad there was someone supporting me. One of the fairies came to me and
asked, Anna, we want you to make a decision. Do you want to stay here but you must
promise us not to make any damage in this island and you must live here forever, or you want
to go back to your world but you also must promise us to bury the stone deeply so that
nobody will see it and you can never come back here?
I was thinking so hard, I didnt want to leave this place, but I didnt want to leave my
family as well. But I needed to choose one of them. Finally, I decided to go back to my world
and forget everything about this island. They respected my decision. I then hugged them one

by one as a farewell, including peter. I hugged Jackson a little bit longer than others. I said
sorry to him and he said sorry to me too. I looked at the fairies and admired them until I was
satisfied because I wouldnt see them anymore. Then when I was ready, the fairies
surrounded me and sang the magic words.
Suddenly I returned to my backyard. The stone was still at the place where it was
when I found it. I got into the house to take a hoe. There was nobody at home. I soon realized
that it was still Sunday. My family was visiting my grandfather and they were not coming
home yet. After I found the hoe, I went back to my backyard and dig a deep hole to bury the
stone. I could never get back there anymore even though I wanted to. The fairies must have
strengthened the protection layer since I was sent home. I would not tell anyone about my
precious story. I would only keep that experience in mind.
Day by day was gone. I always remembered what caused those animals to find
another place to live. Since that time, I became an animal lover and I paid more attention to
the nature around me. My life wasnt flat anymore because Ive got new positive and
entertaining activities.
