HAHAHA CS01 V2

USER'S GUIDE

WELCOME BACK TO THE FUTURE!

Congratulations on your procurement of the Hahaha CS01, the hottest
portable micro-synthesizer of 1982. For this version, we have thrown away
the batteries AND the mains power supply. Instead, you get it all in a tiny
VSTi file, making the CS01 more portable than ever before!
NOTE
This product is FREEWARE. If you have paid any money for it,
or even for its specific distribution, you are a crime victim.

ABOUT...
To see which version of the synth you have, right-click somewhere other than
on a control and select "About..." from the pop-up menu that appears.

CHANGES IN V2

Extensively re-coded and re-compiled to work in multi-core computer

systems.

Animated on-screen keyboard.

Changed velocity sensitivity behaviour, primarily to fix sticking notes

when using VCA velocity sensitivity.

Fixed-setting chorus.

New MIDI learn system.

Improved pitch bend and mod wheel behaviour, and a new mod wheel
attenuation button.

Increased polyphony (8 voices) and improved voice stealing.

V2 is not patch-compatible with V1, and have different VSTi IDs. You
may wish to keep the old versions for work with old projects.

ORIGINAL CS01 QUIRKS

Here are some special things to notice about the workings of the CS01:
Pitch bend only goes upwards with a fixed range of 1 octave. (see also
"Extended Operation" below.)
The CS01 does not use portamento, but glissando (the pitch changing in
discrete semitones from old note to new note). On faster glissando settings,
you hardly notice the difference but it is there.
The FEET selector is an oscillator octave range selector but hey, let's
pretend we are all organists here...
White noise generator selection is not done via the WAVE selector as you
would expect, but with the WN setting below 32' on the FEET selector.
The filter resonance selector have just two settings, "H" and "L" meaning
"on" and "off", respectively.
Why a separate VCA EG DEPTH slider at all? Because if you add expression
via the Breath Controller input, you need to turn this down to get any breath
controller effect on the VCA!

NOTE
At the time of writing, the original manual for a synthesizer uncannily
similar to the Hahaha CS01 is still available from the manufacturer,
here:

WHAT ABOUT THE CS01II?

The CS01 II appeared in 1984. Although presented as a separate VSTi
instrument here, there are only three differences compared to the original:
1. 24dB lowpass filter instead of 12dB.
2. Resonance switch replaced by resonance slider.
3. Different colour scheme and slightly different decor.
Q: Why on Earth is the big green logo upside down, then?
A: Because when you strap the instrument on for a live performance, the
audience will see it the right way up...!

VSTi QUIRKS
The CS01 has a patch memory for 128 patches, but no built-in patch
management system for saving and loading patches. It relies on the patch
management functions of your VSTi host.
Any changes you make to a patch takes effect immediately. The only way to
recall the original, over-written patch for that instance of the synth is to load it
from a previously saved patch bank (.fxb) or single program (.fxp). Refer to
your host's documentation.

EXTENDED OPERATION
The user interface of the Hahaha CS01 is divided into two sections: The synth
itself, and some additional buttons and indicator LEDs on the bluish
background below the synth. When all the LEDs on are off, the synth behaves
exactly like the original with two small exceptions:
1. In addition to Breath Controller (BC) data, it will also accept Channel
Aftertouch (AT) data for expression control.
2. The Volume/power knob does not go to "OFF". Ever.
The extended operation buttons are, from left to right:
FOOT PEDAL
Switches to foot pedal for expression controller input (instead of BC/AT).
STD. PITCHBEND
Makes the pitchbend controller work downwards as well as upwards.
MOD WHEEL ATT.
Attenuates the modwheel so it has a less extreme effect and is more easily
controllable.
LAST NOTE P.
The default mono keyboard mode is that only the highest keyboard key
currently held down sounds. Activating this option means the last key pressed
will sound instead.
POLYPHONY
Makes the Hahaha CS01 8-voice polyphonic.
VCF KEYTRACK
Adjusts the VCF cutoff frequency according to keyboard pitch.
VCF VELOCITY
Adds expression to the filter cutoff using keyboard velocity data.
VCA VELOCITY
Adds expression to the amplitude using keyboard velocity data.

CLEAN
Makes the CS01's signal path all digital. This reduces CPU load and can
also add some zing to high-note triangular and square wave sounds, for
example. However, the majority of sounds will become thinner and a little
more sterile.
REVERB
Switches on a fixed setting "helper reverb", mainly intended to add a bit of
ambience to the sounds when you program patches and haven't got it hooked
up to an external effects chain. (Which you should have to make it full justice,
of course.)
CHORUS
Switches on a fixed setting chorus. Like the reverb, it's mainly there to help
you during patch programming.

CS01 AND MIDI CONTROL

By default, the pitch bend wheel is set to respond to MIDI pitch bend data,
and the modwheel responds to MIDI Controller Code #1.
All other CS01 controls have to be trained before they can respond to MIDI
controller data. To connect a CS01 control to a MIDI controller number:

Right-click the control to be trained.

Select Learn in the menu that appears.

Move a knob/slider/button on your MIDI controller to tie the CS01

control to it.

You can also right-click a control and select Set... to manually select a
MIDI controller code / message type.
Right-click a control and select Unlearn to completely erase an assignment.
ON-SCREEN KEYBOARD
The on-screen keyboard moves when incoming MIDI notes in the right range
are sent to the synth.
Clicking a key with the mouse produces a sound internally, but does not send
MIDI out from the plugin. (And the original didn't have MIDI at all, so that
makes total sense in some weird way!)
