Leveraging Diversity: This definition states that it cultivates opportunities through

different kinds of people. We feel that the main example of this is when astronaut Ken
Mattingly is discovered to have been exposed to measles and that he is not allowed to fly
with the others on the mission. Now these men have been training and preparing for this
mission for a long time and all of sudden by having one of the astronauts removed it not
only upsets the team chemistry but also forces them to bring on another astronaut that
they are unfamiliar with. By having Jack Swigert, Mattinglys replacement, join, it now
creates a diverse team that will eventually have to work together in a life or death
situation.
Political awareness:
Influence: As this film has various influential examples, one main example is when
astronaut Jim Lovell asks the other astronauts what are your intentions? This is a very
influential point in the film because originally everybodys intentions were to go to the
moon. Lovell at this point realizes that he is not able to accomplish his life-long goal and
changes his own intentions. He spreads his influence by clearly stating his intention of
returning home and influences his other teammates to change their own personal
intentions.
Communication: To be a good leader, you have to have effective communication. In the
film, Gene Kranz was able to an effective leader because he was able to demonstrate
clear facts and ideas, ask for feedback/advice and communicate in person with his ground
team. An example of this, is when Kranzs hosts a meeting with his team to discuss how
much longer the astronauts have in fuel and how they can get them home. Kranz refuses
to let them die in space and effectively communicates that it is unacceptable that they
cannot get them home and that Failure is not an option.
Conflict management: When the Co2 filter on the ship encounters problems, it is up to
Kranzs team to figure out how to invent a way to put a square peg in a round hole.
This is a prime example of conflict management because it takes everybody on the team
and their knowledge to somehow make a improvised Co2 filter so that the astronaut dont
die due to Co2 poisoning. Amazingly, Kranzs team is able to both construct the new
filter and also walk the astronauts through building the filter as well. You can also see that
when the Apollo 13 crew and ground control crew were active in building this filter, it
created less conflict. Both crews were tested dramatically, forcing both teams to display
high levels of problem solving and high levels of trust in order to function effectively.
