Preparing students of Std IV to read and write English

l
In Std 4 we revise how to make simple three letter CVC ( consonant - vowel -

consonant ) words, by combining sounds. For eg. b+ox = box; s+un = sun. l+ip= lip and
so on.
l
We now introduce new sounds and new combinations for practice. These combinations

are useful because they help the reader to recognize words easily while reading and
become more confident.
l
What are some of these new sounds? They are sh (as in ship), ch (chop), ck (clock), wh

(wheel), th (thumb) and long vowel sounds like oo (moon)and ee (feet). Pictures, along
with the words help the student understand the meaning of the word.
l
We go further by introducing some difficult vowel combinations like 'ai' (rain), oa (boat)

and ea (leaf) that join together to make one sound.

l
We also introduce other combinations like ow (cow), oy (boy), ew (new), aw (paw),

ou (house). And lastly we look at sounds like: cr (crab), fr (frog), tr (tree) and st (star).
l
Every exercise has short, interesting sentences at the end. Please help the student read,

understand and write them.

Always read the words and sentences aloud. This will help students recognize the letters
along with their sounds.

Look out for the Teaching Points.
