5. System description
The downlink GSM signals from the RBS/BTS
are forwarded directly to the TMB via the Current
Injectors and RF feeder cables.
Full band DPX filters and high power amplifiers,
with adjustable gain, in the TMB perform the filtering and power amplification of the downlink signal to the desired output power level.
An automatic gain control in the module keeps the
gain of the TMB at the selected level.

The uplink GSM signals from the antennas are

filtered and amplified with adjustable gain, in the
TMB. The uplink signals are then fed to the RBS/
BTS through filters, Current Injectors and RF
feeder cables.
The 48 VDC power supply is fed to the TMB via
the Current Injectors and RF feeder cables.
The system is controlled and supervised by means
of control and supervision circuits in the TMB, connected to the CU via a coaxial cable to the CI and
RF feeder cables.

For more detailed system description, see Referenc 3, page 3

6. Operation
During operation on the site the CU communicates
with the TMB, to check status and, if a fault occurs, send alarm to the external alarm interface
of the RBS/BTS.

There are three alarm levels.

6.1 Settings

B alarm
The unit works, but has a minor error that needs
maintenance attention before the unit fails completely.
Example: Minor gain loss for a TMB.

The TX- and RX gain values are adjustable.

6.2 Status
The CU determines the current status of each
connected TMB by polling it once a second.
The CU also reports its own status.

6.3 Alarms
The alarm status is:
- sent via the external alarm connectors output
on the CU.
- shown by LEDs on the front panel of the CU.

Page 8

Normal
The unit works properly

A alarm
The unit has a fatal error and does not work at all.
It needs immediate maintenance/replacement.
Example: Major gain loss for a TMB.
In case of a major failure or power break down,
the CU will present both A and B alarm to the external alarm interface.

8. Alarms and trouble shooting

When a reason for alarm comes up, a message
is created in the TMB. The message is brought to
the CU by the polling function.
When the message reaches the CU, it:
- lights up the LEDs corresponding to the
alarm type
- sends an A or B alarm signal via the external
alarm port
- logs the message.
When an A or B alarm is indicated, the first step
is to establish connection with the CU.

Alarm information via web interface

This can be done either via the site LAN or at the

site.

8.1 Remote connection to

CU via LAN
Open the web interface (see page 18). The Summary status at the Main menu page shows the current status. You can use the show and maintenance
pages to find out alarm reasons and make adjustments.

Alarm information via command line interface

8.2 Connection to CU at site

The alarm situation is shown by the LEDs on the
CU.
To get further information - connect a laptop to the
RS232 port (page 12), USB port (page 14) or
Ethernet port (page 16).
By working on command line level (page 19) you
can get information about alarms for respective
sector, read the error messages, make gain adjustments etc.

8.3 Alarm and status

indicators
The front panel of the CU contains 16 LED indicators.
The LED indicators have the following functions:

1) One red LED and one green LED for indication

of the status (FAIL or READY) of the CPU in the
CU.

1)

- A lit green LED indicates that the CPU is ready.

- A flashing red LED indicates that the CPU is
running on fallback system.

2)

2) Two red LEDs for indication of A and B summary alarms from the CU. These LED indicators
reflect the state of the summary alarm.

3) Two red LEDs and two green LEDs for indication of alarms and communication status for each
TMB connected to the CU (totally six red LEDs
and six green LEDs).
- A lit red LED indicates B alarm.
- A flashing red LED indicates A alarm.
- A lit green LED indicates that this channel has
been configured for communication with a TMB.

8.5 Gain alarms

To be able to understand the reasons for gain
alarms it is important to understand the basic functions of the TMB.

RX-gain
The TMB control system keeps the received gain
equal to set gain over temperature range.

TX-gain
The control system is designed to keep the transmit gain equal to set gain. The system reacts differently depending on input power:

9.3 Sector configuration

The aisgd configuration file of the Control Unit
(CU) contains configuration information for the
TMB System. Each line of this file corresponds to
the configuration of a unit. This configuration consists of an address and the time between pollings,
expressed in milliseconds.
Only units that are configured in this configuration file are monitored for alarms.

Sector 1
L
R
1L01 1R01

Sector 2
L
R
2L01 2R01

Sector 3
L
R
3L01 3R01

If less than three sectors are used on a site, modify

the configuration file as follows:
1. Use the following command to open the configuration file with the editor ee:
2. Remove or comment the lines that corresponds
to the units not installed on the site, using the commands available in the editor ee. (Everything to
the right of the # is a comment.)
3. Save the modified configuration file.
4. Use the following command to restart the aisgd
program with the modified aisgd configuration file:

Example of a configuration file for a three-sector

site:
# List of devices and their intervals between poll
#
#
1L01 1000 # Sector 1 left feeder
1R01 1000 # Sector 1 right feeder
2L01 1000 # Sector 2 left feeder
2R01 1000 # Sector 2 right feeder
3L01 1000 # Sector 3 left feeder
3R01 1000 # Sector 3 right feeder

Do not use the power

switch to restart the unit!

Configurated but not connected sectors will cause

communication alarms.

9.4 File transfer

Files can be transfered to and from the CU. The
purpose can for example be to get log files from
the CU or download files to CU for updating TMB
software.
If IP connection is available it is preferable to use
an FTP client for file transfering.
If IP connection is not available the kermit protocol must be used as described below.

File transfer from the CU

Log in as maint
(See Command line interface , page 19).

Select
Receive File
in the Transfer drop down menu

9.5 Software update

Transfer software to CU
Transfer the software file, supplied by RC, to the
CU as described on page 33.
Transfer software to TMB
If there is communication problems between the
CU and a TMB, this must be corrected or the
current sector(s) must be disabled in the sector
configuration file, see Sector configuration page
31.
Log in as maint.
(See Command line interface, section X.X (19).
Select a sector (in this example 2R01) and enter
the set sw command:
aisgctl 2R01 set sw /home/maint/
US0006-1_R1C.hex (one row)
Press Enter. When OK is shown the file copy is
complete for the current sector.

To switch to the new software, enter the reset

command:
aisgctl 2R01 reset
OK indicates that the new software is loaded.

Proceed with the remaining TMB sectors.

You can check the loaded software by entering

9.6 Log files

The system contains three types of log files:
- aisgderr.log, containing logged incidents which
have affected the external alarm relays.
- aisgdwarn.log, containing aisgderr info + information about other events.
- aisgdinfo.log, containing aisgderr info,
aisgdwarn info + additional, detailed aisgd information.
The log information for each log type is collected
in five files containing previous log information,
called log.0, log.1, log.2, log.3, log.4.
When the amount of log data in the log file has
reached a certain level the data is moved to log.0.
The existing log files are moved one step up, and
the oldest, log.5, is deleted.

Log file transfer

Log in as maint.
Use the following command to show the log files.
cd /usr/local/log
ls
Select desired file and transfer it to the CU as
described on page 32.
