OVERVIEW OF PROCESS ENGINEER

There are some different types of chemical engineers for instances process engineers, operation
engineers, production engineers, environment engineers and many other chemical engineering fields. In
fact, all of those Chemical Engineers types are having their own duties and challenges.
Process engineer, which is best paid and most popular No.2 in the world based on PayScale 2010
have responsibility to manage technical and manufacturing projects to meet the objective of the business
in term of cost, timescale and fitness for purpose (Perstorp, 2010). Furthermore, being a process
engineer also need to the design of the project, drawing, and equipment specifications (Liza Munda n.d).
In short, process engineer is a worthwhile job yet high responsibility.

JOB SCOPES- CHALLENGES

I am agree of the statement that, process engineer are mostly working in design Consultant
Company who are having the responsibility of handling the project schedule including man hours,
engineering hours and the cost estimation because it is just their job! Sitting on the desk, thinking with
their brain and get ideas. It is the most interesting fact of being process engineer yet challenging. One
more thing that I really go for it is that the all of the job concept are arranged in order based on
engineering work flow from beginning up to the end. Job concepts followed by the previous statement
are: Conceptual studies, Front End Engineering Design (FEED) and Detailed design.
Well, the Ranhill Worley- process engineer (Miss June Roy) did state that there will be two types
of work which are Greenfield and Brownfield projects. Greenfield project is the brand new project and
never have done beforehand whereby the Brownfield project is the project to modify the existing plant.
In fact, between these two projects, the Brownfield projects seem to be the hardest one. In brownfield
project, the process engineer may look into equipment sizing, valve sizing, drawing development,
HAZOP, report writings (safeguarding memorandum, control philosophy, update OPM). I am strongly
disagree for that. For me, what is the hardest challenge is the Greenfield project. Here, your originality
and your awareness will be tested, this is the way how to develop your critical thinking and last but not
least, your communication skill will be tested. It is not easy to convince people towards the fresh brand
new project.

From the above information, it is quite well proven that being a process engineer is not an easy
job, but it has their own art called challenges. In fact, process engineer may found some differences
from what they learn in university, for example: all the process is no longer steady state and mostly of
the fluid is on multiphase. Apart from that, not all the information is given, sometimes assumptions is
the best way. For those who likes to work based on time limit, this is the suitable job for you and you
must go for it but for the one who does not like time limit, you can just go for another option.
In addition, besides the technical challenges, the non technical challenges also may appear such
as how to interact with the client and other engineers. Process engineer also have their own roles in
industries which is become the main controller of not only other engineers but also the industry (June
Roy 2010). In short, without process engineer, the nature concept of the plant is not there.

WORK ACTIVITIES - SKILLS

Process engineer will not working only in certain type of company, but they have broad chances
to go on, for instance ; engineering consultants, Oil and Gas, Chemical and Food, Waste water,
Pharmaceutical, Health Safety and Environmental, Inspection, Biotechnology, Engineering software,
etc. While working with all of that industries, the most important thing that a process engineer should
take note is the Quality System (ISO 9001, ISO14001) ,Codes (ASME, American Petroleum Institute)
and Standards (Client standard, book standard such as Perry). All of standard must not be neglected and
it is become the key for process engineer.
All types of engineers are basically work based on the technical skills that they had and gained
since university but bear in mind but besides that, soft skill is also merely important. There will be some
essential soft skill that engineers must have as for instance technical writing skills, business report skills,
presentation skills, broad communication skills and supervision-mentoring skills. I strongly agree with
this, all engineers can not ever live without all those things. That is the art, when I have to design in
technical way but in the other hand I have also to convince others about my work.
Last but not least, chemical engineers must work with computer aided design (CAD) software
such as HYSYS, ASPEN, PIPESIM, FLARENET,CHEMCAD etc. And for me, there is no limitation to
study any other software outside chemical engineering scope indeed useful, such as AutoCad, Google
Sketch Up, Ms.Visio, Simulink and any other useful tools to help my life better in the future as the
newbie Chemical engineers.

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING GRADUATES

As one of the students who are taking major in Chemical Engineering, it is important for me to
know that after graduate, there will be a working life to go on whereby inside the working life itself
there will be certain level that I must achieve e.g from process engineer to senior process engineer,
senior process engineer to principal process engineer. And between this level, there are a lot of things
that need to be done such as some certifications and any other qualifications. It is look though for me,
but as long as I fight my best, I believe it is going to be all right.

CONCLUSIONS
In conclusion, process engineers role is very significant in every industry. They are not only
holding the main role of the industry but also become the trigger of the industrys project. However,
being process engineer is not that simple, it is required high motivational mentality and high
responsibility. There will be a lot of job duties and challenges that the engineer must have to deal with.

OVERVIEW OF MY PERSONALITY
I was the only one hope and might be the only one happiness on the day of May 10, 1988 for Joel
Santosos family. However, the operation was a hurdle for my mom; she said need more than 6 hours to
let me go from her tummy until the doctor decide to suck me. Started from that point, my dad realized
that I will become stubborn daughter in the future. Time passed by and the fact is just right! I am
stubborn yet I am adorable and my family love me so much. Well, it is not the one and only personality
that I have, but that is the most real personality that can be seen since born. I believe that most of the
people personality is just there from born. As Dr.Adeline said that 50% personality is coming from the
genetic and the other 50% is the environmental which is later can actually affect the first 50%
personality. I am agreed with this statement because this is what happens in my life.

PERSONALITY INVENTORY
The talk from the one who master on psychology will always be interesting. We were required to
fill some questionnaire and should answer in a blast meaning I just can not read it over and over again,
because it will actually determine who actually you are. There are 8 basics personal inventory which are
exist in human life. Not each of the characters, but the combination among the 8 characters will actually
build the factual human personality. As the result, there were 4 letters represent of my personality which
is ESTJ (Extrovert Sensation Thinking Judging) and it was interesting by knowing my own
characteristics. It was figured out that the combination between ESTJ are actually showing the
uniqueness of the real me.
Extrovert and Introvert characteristics are actually represent the way we express our feelings, the
way how we act with others, the way how we socialize with other and different way to express our
energy. Extroverts are very happy, noisy, have a broad friendship and very communicative while
introvert is just keep quite all the time, stick to initial plan, and territorial.
The other pair of characteristics is Sensation and INtuition. Sensation and Intuition
characteristics are actually represent the way people catch up and interact with the information given.
Intuition person are normally digest the information in a very intuitive way, they like to have a day

dreaming, vivid imaginary, and even making their own fantasy while Sensation person are actually
digest the information in based on the facts, experience and they are always thinking realistically.
Next is Thinking and Feeling characteristics. These characteristics are representing the way
people thinking. Thinking person is more logically and more to impersonal person while feeling person
is just the opposite.
Another type is Judging and Perceiving. Judging people are the type of person who doing
everything very fast, serious, follow schedule, on time, never rest until their own decision accomplished
while perceiving type people are the people who are always relax, never lose temper, and less serious.

FOUR TEMPERAMENTS
From basic personal inventory, there are certain combinations which are actually showing the
four temperaments of human, they are:
a.

SJ (Sensing/Judging) = is a very common combination and it short, SJ personality is a slave

type person. SJ can never say no, high responsibility, very organize person, always complete the job
done on time but easily to be manipulated by others, respect the tradition and routine, hard working.
b.

SP (Sensing/Perceiving) = SP personality is type of person who are mostly like action, very

impulsive by nature, tough person , free person, impassion, they do not like to be tied and like to seize
the day.
c.

NT (Intuition/Thinking) = NT personality are perfectionist, arrogant person by personality, high

expectation, very competitive, do not care about human emotion, cold, vague with social time, want to
be appreciated.
d.

NF (Intuition/Feeling) = NF personality are totally sensitive, paranoid, high sympathy, can not

handle negative criticism, always asking why, dedicated, most loving, really meant the life meaning,
future oriented.

CONCLUSIONS
I am strongly agreed with the personality concept to be always applied in human life. It is actually
reflecting the ordinary human characteristics. Me myself has already proved my personality as ESTJ
(S/J). It is full represent the real me. There must be strengths and weakness from these characteristics;
however it would be very useful for me to always refer to. Human personality is a nature characteristic

and can not be simply transformed, destroyed and created. In addition, it is actually giving the real you
and how unique you are since God created us in different characteristics.
