Homework #4
Due: Wednesday Feb 5 8:00 AM
Hand in to the TA at beginning of class. No late homework is accepted (see grading policy
posted on eeweb). If you cannot make it to class, you must slip the HW under my door before the
due time.

Problem #1 (20 points)
emf in a shrinking loop
Consider a loop of wire of radius a, with a very small gap as shown. A static B-field is oriented
B
B
in the direction B 0 x 0 z . The loop is shrinking as a function of time, such that its radius

is given by the function a(t)=a0-bt. (for 0 < t < a0/b)
(a) What is the voltage across the gap v(t)=Vb-Va as a function of time for 0 < t < a0/b?

(b) Now consider the same problem, except the magnetic field magnitude is changing as a
function of time: B0(t)=B0t, at the same time as the loop is shrinking.
Problem #2 (20 points) Ulaby 5.37 (6e) or Ulaby 5.35 (5e) (Parallel-wire transmission
line inductance) When solving this problem, you should neglect the magnetic field within the
wires this simplifies the solution, and is valid at high frequencies when the current flows on the
surface.
Problem #3

(40 points)

Image Theory for Magnetic Field

In this problem, we wish to use image theory to consider an AC current I Iz flowing in a wire
of radius a above a perfectly conducting ground plane at distance d . You should make the
approximation that a d. This is shown, along with the B-field, in the Figure below. For the DC
case, conductors have no magnetic properties, and the magnetic field would extend through the
ground plane as if it wasnt there (even for an excellent conductor like copper). However, in a
perfect conductor (such as a superconductor), changing magnetic fields induce eddy currents in

the metal according to Faradays Law which result in B-field being zero inside the metal.
Therefore, the following boundary conditions hold at the surface of a perfect conductor:
(just outside, since the normal B component is continuous across interfaces)
Bn 0
(transverse H component is related to surface current on perfect conductor)
n H J s
Even if the conductor is not perfect (like a metal such as gold or copper), at high frequencies the
magnetic field will not penetrate very far and the current will flow on the surface. Just how far is
known as the skin depth, which we will cover later in the course (section 7.5 in the book)

(a) Use the image method to satisfy the boundary condition and find the magnetic field for
y>0. You should use the fact that the vector potential from a single infinite line current is

I Iz is A 0 ln z where r is the distance from the wire.

(b) What is the surface current distribution that flows on the surface Js(x)?

(d) What is the inductance per unit length of this infinitely long transmission line?
Problem #4 Maxwells Equations

(20 Points)

Maxwells equations reflect the empirical fact that magnetic charge (a magnetic monopole)
doesnt exist (or at the very least, has never been observed experimentally). Imagine that this
morning scientists discovered the existence of magnetic charge! Modify Maxwells equations to
account for this new fact. Be sure to explain qualitatively any new terms that you introduce or
invent.
