Thousands Turn Out In Leicester

For Richard IIIs Viewing

WITHOUT DITCHING its austerity prescription for the UK economy,

the Conservative-led government announced a series of mini-giveaways
March 18 that it hopes will bear
dividends at what is expected to be the
tightest general election in decades.
In his final budget statement ahead of
the May 7 election, Treasury chief George
Osborne focused his largesse on wannabe
homebuyers, pensioners, drivers and
frequenters of the British pub. The cost
of the measures, budget figures showed,
was more than offset by other steps such
as reducing tax avoidance and raising a
levy on banks.
And looking ahead, the austerity mantra that has been the centerpiece of the
governments economic strategy since it

was formed five years ago, looks set to

remain at least if the Conservative Party

Osbornes sweeteners to voters included:

Increasing the level that people start
paying income tax to 11,000 a year
from 2016-17.
No tax paid on the first 1,000 saved
for those paying the standard rate of
income tax.
A plan to help first-time home buyers, whereby the government will
contribute 1 to every 4 saved for
the purchase, up to 3,000.
A penny off a pint of beer.
An upcoming fuel duty frozen for
another year.
A review on the tax system governing
inheritance.
Overall, it was, according to Capital
Economics chief UK economist Vicky
Redwood a budget that balanced fiscal
prudence with election bribery.
stays in power. Documents accompanying
the budget indicate tough controls over
spending for at least another four years,
though they do suggest that austerity will
conclude at the end of the decade.

Eurostar For $1.1bn

BRITAINS government has agreed to

sell its stake in Eurostar, the high-speed
rail service that connects London, Paris
and Brussels, for757m, wrapping up a
major deal months before the general
election.
The Treasury said last month a group
of international investors, Canadas
Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec
and UK-based Hermes Infrastructure,
agreed to buy the governments 40-percent stake for 585.1m. Eurostar agreed
to redeem the governments preference
share for an additional 172m.
Treasury chief George Osborne said
the sale was a fantastic deal for UK
taxpayers that exceeds expectations,
but critics described it as a fire sale of
an important national asset.
CDPQ manages public pension funds.
Hermes Infrastructure is a fund managing about 3bn for its clients.

THE BBC says it has decided not to renew the

Corgi Race Predicts Royal Baby Name

Alexandra It Is Then! Maybe?

LADBROKES the UK betting agency sponsored what was billed as

the worlds first Royal Corgi Race last month, and now claim to have
predicted the name of the Royal baby, due in mid to late April.
Alexandra came in first out of 10 dogs, in the Bloomsburys Bedford
Square meet.
Names popular amongst the Royal family, not least the Queen, were
entered into the big race. Each corgi taking part shared a possible name for Prince Georges future brother or sister.
Favourites Elizabeth (5/1) and James (8/1) made it
into the group, along with rank outsiders,
Camilla (100/1) and Boris (200/1).
After the race was run Wills and The
Duchess of Cambridge found out their
next child will be a baby girl and sister to
Prince George, named Alexandra (8/1)
after she was first corgi past the post
ahead of Camilla and Victoria (10/1) in
4.32 seconds.
It is vital we note that the peoples name
choice for the next girl born to Kate is
Elizabeth (who didnt make the race podium). There are also some outside bets
on the names Sapesan and Mercedes at
500/1 apiece. Photo: LADBROKES

11-Year-Old Sent Home

From School For Christian
Grey Costume

THOUSANDS of British students marked

World Book Day by going to school in costume as their favorite fictional characters.
But one 11-year-old found himself in a bind
when he dressed as Christian Grey, the
S&M-loving billionaire hero of erotic thriller
50 Shades of Grey.
Teachers at Sale High School in northwestern England sent Liam Scholes home
last month after deeming his suit, accessorised with cable ties and an eye mask,
unacceptable.
The school said that the decision reflects
the schools high standards in terms of student behavior, welfare and safeguarding. It
said Liam returned once he had modified
his costume.
Liams mother, Nicola Scholes, defended
the costume, saying children knew who Grey
was from media coverage. She said Liam
walked into school yesterday and every
child knew who he was.

Attempted Car Theft Sees

Robber Knock Himself Out
On The Rebound

A GOOD lesson on how not to break into a

car can now be viewed on YouTube, as one
man attempted to break a car window with a
brick, only for the brick to bounce back and
knock him unconscious.
The attempted theft in Drogheda, Ireland,
was caught on CCTV video which was later
used by police to establish exactly what
happened.
The owner of the Mercedes car, Gerry
Brady, who owns the nearby Pheasant pub,
came out to investigate and found the man
lying in a pool of his own blood.
When the Garda picked him up, he
started claiming that I attacked him. He was
still telling them that in the station when
I came in with the footage of him getting
knocked out by his own brick, he said.
You should have heard the garda laughing when they saw the video. They were in
stitches. Credit to them, they were straight
out when we called and found the guy within
minutes.

League, But Under Fire For
Pitch-Hire Advertisement

FOOTBALL team Charlton Athletic became

mired in controversy last month over an
alleged incident on their football pitch . . . a
young couple making love.
Since the incident Charlton have admitted that the furore caused by footage of the
couple appearing to get intimate in the centre
circle on their pitch at the Valley Parade was
a publicity stunt by the Championship club.
The video went viral, attracting more than
a million hits.
It had been suggested that the amorous pair may have broken into the South
London ground, but Charlton eventually
confessed all.
The club are hiring out their pitch for fans
to play on in the summer and launched the
offer on their website under the headline
Score at the Valley.

And, with the club having had their fun

with the video, commercial manager Mark
Hassan-Ali said: We wanted to launch our
pitch hire programme with a viral that would
make football fans laugh.
We released some CCTV footage earlier
in the week of a young couple on the pitch in
a rather amorous situation. We then decided
to own up and explain that it was set up by
us to launch our pitch hire campaign. The
feedback has been great and we can confirm
that the young couple will be attending our
next home match.

Nominations Open For

Annual Shed Of The Year
Contest

ECCENTRICITIES and affections for the

once-simple garden shed are about to be
given their time in the limelight again, as
the Annual Shed Of The Year contest began
accepting nominations last month.
Named as early contenders this year
includes a mini-pub shed called The Ballroom at Keyworth in Nottinghamshire, and
the VW-themed Pear Tree Wedding HQ in
Northamptonshire. Pushing for recognition
also are a bunker-like Bikers Shed near
Chichester and a Pirate Retreat in Croydon.
In tandem with the 2015 competition,
sponsors Cuprinol have published their annual Shedonomic report on the nations
garden shed habits.
The report reveals some of the bizarre
items that Brits horde in their sheds including
ex-husbands possessions, retro cassette
tapes and Second World War gas masks.
The report also outlines how the garden
shed industry has become worth over 8bn
to the British economy, with more than 21
million people in the UK now owning a shed.
Sheddies will spend nearly a year in
their sheds during their life, but that nearly
a third admit their shed is so messy they
can barely get through the door, according
to the report.
Last years winner was Joel Bird from
London for his eco-friendly Allotment Roof
Shed which he built from scratch using recycled materials and used to grow an array
of vegetables.

Scottish Backpackers Note

Saw Her Make a Catch Of
Lad Running Beach

A SCOTTISH woman backpacker, named

only as Sarah, sat taking in the beauty of
a New Zealand beach, and after spotting a
man who took her fancy left a romantic
note at the spot.
William Scott Chalmers had been running with his labradoodle dog on the beach
in Picton.
Sarah left her sign at the seafront, with
a drawing of William and his dog, in the
hope that he would see it and agree to a
date with her.
The note read read: Is this you? I was
sitting on the grass on Friday watching the
sea, you were playing with your dog. On the
off chance you are single, remember who I
am and would like to meet for a drink/coffee/
walk, Ill be sitting on the grass watching the
sea from 1 to 1.30pm onwards on Tuesday...
Maybe youll run past again!?!
Sarah added on the back of the poster: In
the spirit of happy endings, give this sign a

chance to be seen by the right eyes!
It may even bring a dozen or so people
back on Tuesday, intrigued... who is this girl
with the long brown hair and the boy with the
star tattoos and the dog and will they meet
for a drink?
The sign caused a sensation among locals
in the town and a search was launched to
find the mystery man . . . William was a
local caf worker.
Television crews were on hand to film the
couples first meeting when William returned
to the beach and asked Sarah to go for a
drink with him.
Sarah, who is spending three months
travelling round New Zealand, refused to give
her full name to television interviewers. She
said: I hate cameras and being the centre of
attention. People dont act on things often so
it was just me acting on something.
William, who works at a burger bar, said
that he first heard of the poster when his
housemate came home at 3am and woke
him up.
He knew it was me because Im the only
guy in Picton who has star tattoos, JohnnyBravo hair and a labradoodle, he said.
Im not sure if the poor girl knows what
shes gotten herself into. Its just gotten
so big.

Sheep Does A Smash-AndEnter At Local Store

WORKERS at a Scottish electrical suppliers

found themselves chasing a sheep around
the store one day last month.
After jumping over a local farmers wall,
the woolly intruder walked over a mile to the
YESSS Electrical store on Houston Industrial Estate, Livingston, West Lothian before
crashing the party.
The intrusive ram head-butted the door
and cracked two panes of glass to gain
entrance to the store, running staff amok.
Branch manager Mark Ramsay (real
name), 40, from Livingston, said staff were
chasing the sheep down the aisles for over
15 minutes.
It was surprisingly quick and nimble,
he said. We get all sorts of customers in
store, but this is definitely the first sheep. It
had the staff chasing their tails for a quarter
of an hour. It definitely pulled the wool over
their eyes.
Staff finally managed to collar the fluffy
visitor and manager Mark contacted a local
farmer who came to collect it.
The store is reportedly planning to put
a sign on the door saying all sheep are
baaaarred from the store.

These Scottish Cheese And

Biscuits Not What Woman
Had In Mind

A HOTEL in Scotland surprised an Ayshire

woman last month when she ordered cheese
and biscuits.
Dianne Murray expected what is considered, in that part of the world, the usual
choice of dry biscuits, such as crackers

and oatcakes, with a selection of cheeses.

But, instead she was handed a beautifully arranged bowl of bourbons, Custard
Creams and Jammie Dodgers alongside
generous chunks of brie and cheddar.
A tweet of the cheese plate has gone
viral after being shared on Twitter by her
step-daughter Steph Kerr who tweeted: If
you need cheering up, heres a photo of the
time my stepmum asked for cheese and
biscuits at a hotel.
Surprisingly, a good number of people
responded positively to Scotlands bizarre
new culinary addition.
The hotel has not yet been named but
Murray has offered to identify it, but only if
donations are made to Comic Relief.

An Asda store in West Yorkshire was
the chosen venue for the mini-impromptu
party last month.
The jokers stunned staff and shoppers
with their noisy and scantily-clad presence.
A video of the stunt went viral on YouTube last month, where Speedoshy and
Disco Boy put on their gig.
The pair jumped onto the self-service

dance music blares out from the speaker.
As bemused shoppers and supermarket
staff look on in astonishment, the pair were
finally escorted out of the store by a security

guard, an impressed customer can be heard

DiscoBoy said: Some people play computer games, Id rather do this stuff. Each

Woodpecker Serves As Taxi

For Hitchhiking Weasel

AN UNUSUAL photo of what seems to be of a

weasel riding along on a woodpeckers back
was snapped by a photographer last month.
Martin Le-May, of Essex, took the photo
while walking with wife Ann in Hornchurch
Country Park in East London, and said later
the weasel was actually attacking the bird.
Le May told the BBC: I heard a distressed
squawking noise and feared the worst. I
soon realized it was a woodpecker with
some kind of small mammal on its back.
Le-May added that the woodpecker was
in a struggle for its life with the unwanted
passenger.
I think we may have distracted the
weasel as when the woodpecker landed it
managed to escape and the weasel ran into
the grass, he said.
The picture was posted to Twitter by
Jason Ward and has been retweeted thousands of times.
Le May said: Im so proud so many
people are getting to see my image. Im
totally taken aback by the response to it,
he said.

Spocking Bank
Notes Has Become
A No-No In Canada
LEONARD NIMOYS death last month
sparked off a Spocking craze in
Canada which has seen the government
ask people to stop drawing Mr Spocks
features on $5 bank notes.
Not a new habit, as fans of the
famous Star Trek character have been
scribbling on the face of former PM Wilfrid Laurier Canadas first Francophone
prime minister on the notes for years.
But after Nimoy passed away last month the numbers of altered notes multiplied
noticeably.
Canadas central bank explained that it was not illegal to add Spocks pointy Vulcan
ears, sharp eyebrows and signature bowl haircut to the notes. However, it did encourage
citizens to stop their scribbling.
Bank spokeswoman Josianne Menard explained the request in an email: There are
important reasons why it should not be done.
The bank believed it was inappropriate to deface the banknote because it was a
Canadian symbol and source of national pride.
The acceleration of the trend followed the actors death with social media users posting
their own versions of Lauriers Vulcan makeover in honour of their hero.
Spock your $5 bills for Leonard Nimoy, the Canadian Design Resource tweeted
on its posting while Simon Williams tweeted: Ive had a beat up Canadian five buried
in my wallet for years, finally found a use for it!
Images of the altered bills were circulated widely online and attracted international
media attention.
Calgary artist Tom Bagley, who posted his own Spock-Laurier hybrid on Facebook
and Flickr after Nimoys death, said the original idea came about as an old bar trick to
impress a waitress and he did not see anything wrong with it. I always thought it was
OK as long as the numbers were intact it still counted as money, he said.

Honkers And Shankers Loses My Business

I GOT my first cheque in September 1958.

It was (for the then) princely sum of 27,
provided by Devon County Council to cover
my first-term expenses at London University,
board and lodging being included in my
college place.
Knowing nothing about banks, I figured
the best way to find one was to go out of
Goldsmiths, turn left and enter the first bank
I saw. I assumed that the same bank would
be equally accessible wherever I went in the
country and I think my subsequent experiences proved that to be true.
Thus I became a Midland Bank customer,
joining a financial institution set up in Birmingham in August 1836 with roots back
in Stourbridge and Bewdley: a truly Midland
concoction.
To be honest, I gave little more thought
down the years to my banking preference
since whenever I moved there was always
a Midland ready to hand. Initially, they were
daunting places, banks, to a working-class
kid like me. They knew everything about my
life as expressed in columns of figures. They
tracked me from one geographical location
to another, knew where I lived, where I went
on holiday, where my parents were located
and so on. But they were more than curious
bystanders in my life, they exerted real influence over me. They could determine whether
I rented or bought a house. They would help
me to buy a car or to invest my money.
FAMILY
Thus they became almost like senior
members of my own family whose approval
I courted and whose disapproval I feared. I
recall being summoned by Buckland Jones,
our Midland manager in Whitchurch, who
was worried about our frequent visits into
the red. He had previously advanced a couple
of hundred pounds to buy a minivan which
he thought best reflected our merit to the
education world. Now occupying a leather
armchair in the plush confines of the Midland
Bank, High Street, Whitchurch, it was his
solemn duty to inform me that being regularly
overdrawn to the astronomic sum of twenty
pounds was unpardonable.
Except that I neednt bother about it because he knew I was working hard and he
wrote me a letter (I still have it) to say that I
never need worry about owing money to the
Midland. In fact, it was to be another twentyfive years before the monthly descent into the
red became a thing of the past when both
our children had grown up and gone away.
TEACHER
Lets return to the fresh-faced student
opening a bank account in the fifties. By
the time I left to become a teacher, I had
amassed a tidy debt. Eight pounds. This
student debt was to hang round my neck
like a millstone for all of two months. That is
the reason I d etest the student loan scheme.
I was genuinely alarmed to have entered the
red at the end of my studies simply because
I had to pay my rent in advance and my
teachers pay was a month in arrears. When
I think of students today leaving with tens
of thousands of pounds to repay, it almost
makes me weep.
Today I happen to belong to a charity
based in Tenbury Wells. It goes under the
name of NILS, No Interest Loan Scheme.
They advance loans of up to 400 for people

PECULIARITIES
At that point, I could take Honkers and
Shankers no more and cast around for a
British bank more conveniently located in
my Shropshire town. I will spare you the
name of this bank as I am only just getting
used to its peculiarities and would not wish
to sway your opinion of it. The one thing I can
tell you is that having been a Midland/HSBC

withdrawal from them did anyone ever ask
me why I was moving my account or seek to

They didnt even offer me a tax-dodging

The money is repaid up to a period of two

DONORS
It is quite an attractive scheme, currently

helping 50 or so people, and attracting support from a variety of donors. One local
church has come up with the idea of encouraging the elderly who automatically receive
200 from the government for winter fuel
payments to donate that money to NILS. And
increasing numbers of wealthier pensioners
are doing just that. Making loans manageable
without the need for a bank.

UK Kennel Club Says

Tests Show Dog Was
Poisoned In Belgium

Labour Chief Rules Out Pact

With Scottish Nationalists

RR By Danica Kirka

TOXICOLOGY tests show that the Irish

Setter who died after appearing at Britains top dog show was almost certainly
poisoned after the contest, organizers said
last month.
The Kennel Club, which runs the worldfamous Crufts show, said the tests showed
that the dog, known as Jagger, died on
March 7 after returning to his home in
Belgium of fast-acting poisons that usually
would cause symptoms within three to four
hours. That would rule out a poisoning at
Crufts, which took place March 5.
It is highly likely that the poisons,
thought to be on a piece of beef, were eaten
in Belgium, shortly before Jaggers death,
the club said of the results.
The dog ingested aldicarb and carbofuran, two insecticides used in agriculture
but not approved in the European Union,
the club said.
The Kennel Club said no dogs were
shown to be sick at the show and no complaints were made to the police.
CONFIRMED
The part-owner of Jagger, breeder Jeremy Bott, declined to comment on the results. The office
of the vet in Belgium confirmed
the results of the
tests were in, but
referred all comments to the dogs owners.
News of Jaggers death made international headlines when it was revealed
last month. Though the co-owners in both
Belgium and Britain underscored that
they did not believe another competitor to
be involved, the mystery of how the dog
became ill led to speculation that there
might have been some malicious intent.
Canine competitions have long been
the subject of rumors about unscrupulous
behavior including owners slipping drugs
to rival dogs.
Crufts is a particularly prestigious
show. Founded in 1891, it is Britains
most famous dog event, attracting more
than 21,000 competitors from 43 countries
this year.
The club asked for space to allow the
owners to grieve and urged people to
be aware how easily a dog might ingest
poison.

LOOKING ahead to Britains national

election in May, the leader of Britains
main opposition Labour Party last month
ruled out forming a coalition government
with the separatist Scottish National Party.
Labour chief Ed Miliband said such an
arrangement will not happen.
There are big differences between
us ... Labour will not go into coalition
government with the SNP, he said at a
town hall event in Yorkshire. He declined
to say, however, whether a more loosely
held arrangement might occur.
GAINS
The SNP is expected to make big gains
in the May 7 ballot, capitalizing on the
grassroots organization put into place during last years independence referendum.
Voters electrified by possibility of upending the status quo may decide to leave
Labour and gravitate to the SNP.
Polls suggest that no party has enough
support to form a majority government
after the vote, meaning some sort of
multi-party coalition is likely. If the SNP
grabs many of Labours seats in Scotland,
Labour would find it hard to form a gov-

As long as there are more SNP and

other working relationships. In fact, I

was the direct cause of the deaths of 96
Liverpool fans at the FA Cup semifinal
between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
Under questioning from barrister Paul
Greaney, Duckenfield accepted that the
crush would not have taken place if fans
had been prevented from going down a
tunnel, admitting he froze before eventually ordering the exit gate be opened..
Greaney put it to Duckenfield that the
failure to close the tunnel was the direct
cause of the deaths of 96 persons. Duckenfield replied: Yes sir.
New inquests are currently being held
after the original verdicts of accidental
death were overturned, and former chief
superintendent David Duckenfield gave
evidence last month.
In meetings immediately after the April
1989 crush, Duckenfield admitted to saying that fans had got in through gates
which he now says was a terrible lie in
that everybody knew the truth.
MEETING
I did not say, I have authorised opening of the gates, Duckenfield recalled
of the meeting with then-Football Association chief executive Graham Kelly
and club officials in the police control box.
I made a dreadful mistake not realizing
the consequences of what I was doing,
Duckenfield said.
Family members of some of the victims
have been attending the inquest hearings
since they started almost a year ago in
Warrington, near Liverpool in northwest
England.
Duckenfield issued a very, very sincere apology to families who have spent
almost 26 years campaigning for the truth
to be uncovered about the disaster.
What I would like to say to the Liverpool families is this: I regret that omission
and I shall regret it to my dying day, the
retired police officer said. I said something rather hurriedly, without considering the position, without thinking of the
consequence and the trauma, heartache
and distress that the inference would have
caused to those people who were already in
a deep state of stock, who were distressed.

Election Candidate Accused Of

Plot With Far-Right Quits
A CANDIDATE in Britains national
election quit the race March 23 after a
newspaper accused him of plotting with a
far-right group to stir up racial tensions in
order to win votes.
The Conservative Party said that Afzal
Amin was no longer its candidate in Dudley North, in the Midlands. He had been
due to face a party disciplinary hearing the
day after he stepped down.
Amins fate had looked sealed since
the Mail on Sunday newspaper reported
that he had suggested the English Defense
League call a demonstration against a
planned mosque in the central England
constituency and then call it off, with
Amin taking the credit.
He was recorded saying that in return he
would be the groups unshakeable ally
in Parliament.
The League claims to be a peaceful
opponent of radical Islam, though its opponents accuse it of racism and anti-Muslim
prejudice. Its protests which are usually
met by large counterdemonstrations have

often turned violent.

MISLEADING
Amin, one of relatively few Muslim
officers in the British Army, had previously said the newspapers account was
misleading. He said the League, and not he,
proposed that we would do this march and
then we would negotiate a way out of it.
In a statement on his website, Amin
compared his electoral strategy to his army
service in Afghanistan.
Politics requires an amount of bravery
and using my experience as a strategist in
Afghanistan, negotiating between proTaliban militias and the US military, I
decided to use the same tactics to improve
community relations here in my own
country between the EDL and Muslim
communities, he wrote.
Britains election is May 7, with polls
suggesting the outcome is too close to
call. The Conservatives had hoped Amin
could help them win the Dudley North seat,
which the Labour Party took by a 649-vote
margin in 2010.

Foreign Minister: Apologists

Partly To Blame For Terror
RR By Jill Lawless

PEOPLE WHO act as apologists for terrorists are partly to blame for their actions,
Britains foreign minister said last month,
rejecting claims that slip-ups by the intelligence services helped turn young Britons
into jihadi militants.
Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond was
countering allegations by Muslim advocacy
organization CAGE, which says heavyhanded attention from British spies helped
radicalize Londoner Mohammed Emwazi,
who has been identified as the Islamic State
militant known as Jihadi John.
Hammond said the responsibility for
acts of terror rests with those who commit
them. But a huge burden of responsibility
also lies with those who act as apologists
for them.
Hammond strongly defended Britains

intelligence services in a speech to defense

think tank the Royal United Services Institute, saying that the sheer number and
range of threats from state-sponsored
aggression to terrorist groups and lone-wolf
attackers amounts to the greatest challenge to our collective security for decades.
DEDICATION
It is only thanks to the dedication, and
in many cases the brilliance, of our intelligence officers that we have succeeded to
detect and contain these threats, he said.
Britains intelligence services have been
criticized for allowing Emwazi to slip their
net and travel to Syria, even though he
had been on their radar for years. And the
families of other young Britons who have
joined militants in Syria have accused
intelligence and law-enforcement officials
of doing too little to stop them.

Chancellors Budget
Its a recovery for the
few from a government
of the few,

Wartime Union Jack

Government finances took a big dent and Osbornes solution, adopted by the junior partner in
the governing coalition, the Liberal Democrats, was
deep spending cuts and tax increases.
For the main opposition Labour Party, Osbornes
strategy hobbled the UK economy for years and actually made the budget situation worse. It argues that
too much of the burden of fixing the public finances
was placed on the least well-off in society and that
it worsened living standards for many.
Its a recovery for the few from a government of
the few, said Ed Miliband, Labours leader. For
the first time since the 1920s, people are earning
less at the end of a government than they were at

the beginning.

BATTLEGROUND
The UK economy will likely be the main battleground in the election campaign and Osborne sought
to nullify Labours charge that the recovery is not
felt by most people.
Citing independent forecasts prepared for the budget, Osborne said the UK economy is set to expand
faster than anticipated this year despite downgrades
to global growth. He said the Office for Budget
Responsibility thinks the UK will grow 2.5 percent
this year, up slightly from its last prediction of 2.4
percent. Growth is forecast to stay above 2 percent
in subsequent years.
He also insisted public finances are on the mend
and that the budget will be in surplus by 2018-19.
Opinion polls say the general election is too close
to call, with the Conservatives neck-and-neck with
Labour. No party is anticipated to achieve a majority in the election, which means deals with smaller
parties will have to be sealed for a government to
be formed.
Besides the Liberal Democrats, smaller parties
including the UK Independence Party and the Scottish National Party are set to gain representation.

Zayn Malik Quits One

Direction Band To
Lead A Normal Life

AND THEN there were four: Zayn Malik

said March 25 he is leaving chart-topping
boy band One Direction to be a normal
22-year-old.
In an announcement that sent social
media into a tizzy, Maliks bandmates said
they were sad to see him go but we totally
respect his decision and send him all our
love for the future.
Malik said in a statement that his time
with One Direction has been more than I
could ever have imagined.
But, after five years, I feel like it is now
the right time for me to leave the band,
he said. Id like to apologize to the fans
if Ive let anyone down, but I have to do
what feels right in my heart.
I am leaving because I want to be a
normal 22-year-old who is able to relax
and have some private time out of the
spotlight.
One Direction, which is currently on a
world tour, said it would continue with the
four remaining members and would record
a new album later this year.
Only a week before his decision to quit
Malik flew home from a tour stop in the
Philippines,
One Direction formed in 2010 after five
teenagers -- Harry Styles, Liam Payne,
Niall Horan, Tomlinson and Malik -- auditioned individually for the British TV
talent show The X Factor. Simon Cowell
had the idea of putting them together as a
boy band.
They didnt win the competition, but
they went on to top charts and win young
hearts around the world with their cheeky
personalities and perky pop.
Cowell said he had grown very, very
fond and immensely proud of Malik
over the years.
As for One Direction, fans can rest
assured that Niall, Liam, Harry and Louis
are hugely excited about the future of the
band, he said.

event will make its US debut with a NBC
special benefiting anti-poverty groups.
Money raised by the three-hour Red
Nose Day broadcast on May 21 will be
used to help children and families in
Africa, Asia and Latin America as well as
the United States, NBC said last month.
The 12 charities that are to share in the
donations include the Boys & Girls Clubs
of America, Childrens Health Fund and
United Way.
Red Nose Day, operated by Comic
Relief in Britain, was co-founded in 1985
by filmmaker Richard Curtis (Love Actually, Bridget Joness Diary). Celebrities,
schoolchildren and others traditionally
don red clown noses to promote the event,
a reflection of its lighthearted approach.
The biennial March UK broadcast,
featuring stars, comedy and music, has
received more than $1bn in donations since
it began, according to its organisers. Emma

Watson, Daniel Craig and Orlando Bloom

were among the stars appearing in the 2015
special, which aired last month.
HOLIDAY
Red Nose Day is almost like a national
holiday in the UK its a day of real excitement, everyone looks forward to it and
the entire country gets involved in some
way, actress Sienna Miller (American
Sniper) said in a statement. Im thrilled
its coming to the US
NBC has yet to announce the talent
roster for its special, but Mad Men star Jon
Hamm was featured in a promotional spot
that aired during the Super Bowl.
Curtis, who is an executive producer
for the NBC special, said he hopes it will
make a massive difference to the lives of
millions of children and their families in
the US and in the poorest countries around
the world.
Red Nose Day USA is run by Comic
Relief Inc, an independent sister organization of Britains Comic Relief.

made in the north and Scotland, and is
traditionally eaten on bonfire night. It is
actually better made ahead of time and

Lyles Golden Syrup has been named
Britains oldest brand from the 1800s.
The syrup itself came from a by-product
of sugar refined by the Scottish Businessman named Abram Lyle. It is easily
recognised by its green and golden design

bees and the biblical quotation testify to
a peculiarly Victorian mix of moralism,
industrial drive and budding concern for
social welfare.* The syrup was first

Bletchley Park Post Office To Close

BRITAINS secret little post office
closed down at the end of March. The
undercover mailroom of the Enigma code
breakers during the Second World War
became a post office in 1947.
After Bletchley Park became a top
secret code breaking base at the start of
World War Two Quartermaster Robert
Budd established it as an undercover
mailroom in 1940.
Bletchley Park had to be especially
careful that letters sent and received did
not provide enemy agents with clues about
the work it was engaged on. So the mailroom used undercover PO Box numbers
such as PO Box 111 Bletchley and routed
mail through different locations to avoid
revealing Bletchley Parks real purpose.
Everyone had to follow strict rules and
censorship when posting mail overseas.
Much later the building became Bletchley Parks first gift shop when it opened
to the public in 1994. In 2012 it was
refurbished and officially opened by the
keeper of the Royal Philatelic Collection.
But new management at Bletchley Park
have decided it is no longer core to the
codebreaking story. It is the last of the
private collections to leave Bletchley Park.
Naturally the volunteers who kept it
running since Bletchley Park opened in
1994 are disappointed by the decision

but understand that Bletchley Park Trust

wish to focus on the core story of WW2
Codebreaking.
The limited edition first day covers for
new stamp issues it produced helped in
keeping Bletchley Park open in those early
days. Many have become worth several
hundred pounds and sought after by collectors around the world. They became
known as little pieces of art and history
due to the beautiful artwork that combined
with new stamp issues to tell the story of
Bletchley Park.
Now that no more issues will bear the
Bletchley Park Post Office postmark
those collections could increase significantly in value. The few remaining cover
and stamp issues are already being snapped
by collectors and visitors whilst still available. The entire collection can be viewed at
the bletchleycovers.com website.

Former Ulster Unionist Party Leader Molyneaux Dies

JIM MOLYNEAUX, 94, a quiet but
c anny politician who led the Ulster
Unionist Party through some of Northern
Irelands bloodiest years and the early
period of peacemaking, has died.
Party colleagues and the Northern Ireland government confirmed his death last
month, but didnt specify a cause.
Throughout his 1979-1995 leadership,
Molyneaux kept the Ulster Unionists as
Northern Irelands largest party and main

representative of its British Protestant majority, despite strong competition from Ian
Paisleys hard-line Democratic Unionists.
Molyneaux favored integrating Northern Ireland with the rest of the United
Kingdom and opposed key goals of 1990s
peacemaking, particularly the creation of
a local Northern Ireland government and
the central role given to Sinn Fein, the Irish
nationalist party linked to the outlawed
Irish Republican Army.

New Coinage Portrait Of

Queen Elizabeth II Unveiled
in the year.
Although portraits of the queen have
changed over time, a tradition that has
remained constant is that the queen is
always shown facing right.

BRITAINS Royal Mint has unveiled a

new portrait of the Queen that will soon
appear on coins.
The portrait a side profile of the
88-year-old monarch wearing a crown and
drop earrings is only the fifth to have
been created during the queens reign over
six decades.
Gordon Summers, the chief engraver at
the Royal Mint, said the task was probably one of the most difficult things for any
artist or sculptor to do.
Coins featuring the new design went
into production last month, though they
wont begin to be circulated until later

Police Watchdog To
Probe Sex Offense
Cover-Up Claims
BRITAINS independent police watchdog
says it is looking into allegations that Scotland Yard covered up historic allegations
of child abuse from the 1970s to the 2000s.
The Independent Police Complaints
Commission said last month it is investigating 14 referrals, including claims
that the force suppressed evidence and
hindered or halted investigations because
police officers were involved.
Sarah Green, deputy chair of the commission, described the allegations as being
of the most serious nature. Scotland
Yard is also investigating the allegations.
Among the allegations are claims that
a Houses of Parliament document found
at a child sex offenders address linked
lawmakers and police officers to a pedophile ring.
The police said in a statement that
recent convictions show that the service
is committed to investigating non-recent
allegations of sexual abuse.

Talks To Save Belfast

Power-Sharing
Overshadowed St Pats Day
IT HAS become a hallmark of the St Patricks Day holiday: the entire political elite
of Ireland descending on the White House.
Not this year. Northern Irelands unity
government is in turmoil, and its Protestant
and Catholic leaders decided to stay put
in Belfast to try to resolve their troubles.
At risk is an eight-year-old governing
coalition of British Protestants and Irish
Catholics, a cornerstone of peacemaking
for the British territory.
First Minister Peter Robinson and
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness spent time leading their parties in
Belfast negotiations. Robinsons Democratic Unionists represent most Protestants,
McGuinness Sinn Fein most Catholics.
The Republic of Irelands prime minister, Enda Kenny, and the Sinn Fein party
leader, Gerry Adams, were among St Patricks Day White House guests. Adams has
no role in Belfast power-sharing.

UK Proposals Make
Officials Accountable In
Sex Abuse Cases
PRIME MINISTER David Cameron says he is considering measures to make public officials and city
councilmembers accountable if they fail to protect
children from sexual exploitation.
The measures were outlined last month at a meeting called by Cameron that brought police, healthcare
experts and ministers together with victims.
The session was called in response to an investigation
that found some 1,400 children were sexually exploited
in a northern England town. The report cited collective failures by authorities in Rotherham between
1997 and 2013.
Cameron says he will study whether to propose extending the crime of willful neglect of patients to cover
childrens social care and education.
Any legislation would come after the national election in May, which could bring in a new prime minister.

I know what youre thinking: Oh,
look, Andy Richters got his own show,
Corden said as he strode onto the CBS
Television City stage.
The reference to Conan OBriens sidekick wasnt far afield: Corden and Richter
both are round-faced, egg-shaped and
genial. But this time, the apparent second

banana is the star and part of CBS new

late-night guard that will include Stephen
Colbert as successor to Late Show host
David Letterman.
The British-born Corden has the credentials for top billing, with TV sitcom hits
in his native country including Gavin &
Stacey, a Tony Award for One Man, Two
Guvnors on Broadway and a big-screen
role in Into the Woods.
But Corden downplayed his career and
played up his family, introducing himself
as married Sorry, ladies, this ship has
sailed and the father of a four-year-old
son and infant daughter.
I promise you were going to have fun
on this show, and I promise you were going to do everything we can to put a smile
on your face before, or lets be honest,
more likely whilst you fall asleep, Corden
pledged, earnestly.
His parents, visiting Los Angeles from

German-Based Anti-Islam Group

Holds First Rally In England
THE GERMAN-BASED anti-Islam
group PEGIDA held its first rally in
Britain last month, sparking scuffles
as police tried to keep the group away
from counterdemonstrators. Five people
were arrested.
Police said that about 375 people
joined the PEGIDA rally in Newcastle.
About 2,000 people joined the counterdemonstration.
Police say the arrests were isolated
and the event was largely peaceful.
The leader of the Liberty GB political
party Paul Weston told the gathering
that Muslims will become a majority in
Britain in the coming decades and will
take over the country if they are not
challenged.
That is exactly what they will do
if we quietly do nothing, he told the

crowd. We have to fight back.

SATISFIED
Weston said he was satisfied with the
size of the crowd, considering it was
PEGIDAs first meeting in Britain.
Professor Jacqui Rodgers, who took
part in the counterdemonstration under
the Newcastle Unites banner, said
Britons wont accept PEGIDAs views.
I think it is really important for us to
unite as a community and make it very
clear to organizations that are trying
to get a foothold in the UK that we will
not tolerate their attitude and we wont
accept their racist and fascist policies,
she said.
The anti-Islam group appears to have
lost momentum in Germany with the
number of people attending its rallies
dropping in recent months.

Treatment Of Prisoners In
Private Detention Centre
Said To Be Shocking
A PRIVATELY-owned detention centre
in England has been accused of being run
with a shocking loss of humanity after
a terminally ill Canadian man was kept in
handcuffs as he died in hospital.
The chief inspector of prisons Nick
Hardwick, said that on at least two occasions staff at the Geo-run Harmondsworth
immigration removal centre have needlessly handcuffed elderly, vulnerable and
incapacitated detainees in what he called
an excessive and shocking manner.
He said that the two men were so ill that
one died shortly after his handcuffs were
removed and the other, the 84-year-old,
who has been named as Alois Dvorzac,
died while still restrained.
Staff ignored a doctors report declaring the 84-year-old unfit for detention or
deportation and in need of social care.
EXCESSIVE
Hardwick said the security procedures
at the immigration removal centre, which
can hold more than 600 male detainees,
lacked proportionality: Segregation was

Page 7

ujnews.com

being used excessively and was not in line

with the detention centre rules. Disturbingly, a lack of intelligent individual risk
assessment has meant that most detainees
were handcuffed on escort.
He described the use of handcuffs at
Harmondsworth as grossly excessive.
The chief inspector detailed cases in
which detainees who had been assessed
as low risk were put in handcuffs before
they were taken to appointments outside
the centre. He cited one case in which a
detainee who was using a wheelchair following a stroke had been handcuffed on a
journey to hospital for no obvious reason.
A spokesman for Geo, the contractor,
responded by saying detainees were not
routinely handcuffed when taken out of
the centre: However, where there is a
documented risk of absconding, handcuffs
may be used, balanced against a number
of factors, including their age.
The prisons and probation ombudsman
has launched an investigation into one of
the deaths.

New 1 Coin Tails Side

Designed By 15-Year-Old
THE CHANCELLOR of the
Exchequer, Rt Hon George
Osborne has revealed the
winning design for the new
1 coin following the public
design competition launched
in September 2014. The final
design, which will feature as
the definitive reverse of the
coin the tails side is based on the
artwork of fifteen-year-old David Pearce
from Walsall.
The final design features four emblems
to represent each of the nations of the
United Kingdom the English rose, the
leek for Wales, the Scottish thistle, and the
shamrock for Northern Ireland emerging
from a single stem within a crown.
David Pearces design has been refined
for use on the final coin with the support
of the renowned numismatic artist David
Lawrence and lettering expert Stephen
Raw.
The new coin will enter circulation
during 2017.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer,

George Osborne, said: Designing the new 1 coin was

a brilliant opportunity to leave
a lasting legacy on what will
be the most secure coin in
circulation anywhere.
The competition captured
the imagination of thousands
of people and David Pearces
winning design will be recognised by millions in the years ahead. It was fantastic to
congratulate him and other young entrants
in person in Downing Street.
Design winner David Pearce said:
I was really excited to hear that I had
won the competition to design the new 1
coin but hugely shocked as well! I heard
about the competition through my design
teacher at school and I thought I had nothing to lose so I decided to enter. I spent a
lot of time researching what coin designs
looked like and what sort of designs would
represent all parts of the UK before submitting my idea and I honestly cannot believe
I have won.

Prince Harry To Join Wounded Troops On Trek

PRINCE HARRY is leaving the
army, but hes not giving up his
work with wounded troops.
The prince says he plans to
join service members for part
of a 1,000-mile trek around
Britain.
The prince last month met
four men and a woman planning the
Walk of Britain, and announced he
would be joining them for a small part
of the journey later this year.

The trek is organized by

Walking with the Wounded,
a charity that helps injured
veterans move into civilian life.
Harry, who is fourth in line
to the throne, will leave the British Army in June after a 10-year
career that included two stints
in Afghanistan.
Harry has previously joined troops
on Walking with the Wounded treks to
the North and South Poles.

UK Authorities Arrest Suspect In

US Dept Of Defense Cyber Attack
BRITAINS National Crime Agency says
a suspected hacker has been arrested in
connection with a cyber attack on the US
Department of Defense.
The agency said last month the 23-yearold man arrested in western England is
suspected of offenses linked to data stolen
from a messaging service used by DoD
employees.
The agency says contact information
for around 800 people was obtained in the
attack in June.
The hacker posted screenshots from the
dashboard used to control the database and
also posted a message on the text storage

website Pastebin reading, We smite the

Lizards, LizardSquad your time is near.
Were in your bases, we control your
satellites.
The agency says no sensitive data was
obtained and that it did not threaten national security.

AFTER THE BIG 30th Anniversary week, we

all had to take a little breather. We couldnt
take the pressure, and neither could the residents of Albert Square; half of whom seem
to be on holiday this month!
But no holiday for Kat. Things go from
bad to worse for Kat. As she lurches around
the Square drunk and zonked out on cold
medicine, she gets an unwanted blast from
the past: Years ago, when Uncle Harry the
molester died and left her money, she refused
to accept it. Now someone is following her.
She thinks its the social, come to see how
shes taking care of her kids (again), but its
really an investigator whos been looking for
her to assist a lawsuit against Harrys estate.
Turns out Kat isnt the only girl he attacked.
Despite how desperate she is for the money,
she refuses again, but Big Mo contacts them,
pretending to be Kat and asks for the money
to be wired to her bank account. Oh, and we
find out that Zoe wants nothing to do with
her. Mo already knew this, but its news to
Kat (who was planning a trip to see her) when
she gets a text from Zoe saying she has a new
life and doesnt want Kat to be any part of it
Peter is so torn over what Bobby did, and
that Ian is protecting him, that he leaves the
Square, with pregnant Lauren, for a new
life, but not before a heart-to-heart with little
Bobby during which Bobby says he always
feared he had killed Lucy, but was assured
by Jane that he hadnt. He still doesnt know.
Ian and Jane have taken Bobby away on
holiday, leaving Cindy home alone. And while
the cats away, the mice will play: Liam and
Cindy have started hooking up again. They
get caught by Carol and Sonia, and Carols
non-reaction makes Sonia kind of angry.
Maybe Carol is seeing in herself and David in
the two of them. But Sonia is more practical
and buys Liam some condoms. This goes
pear-shaped when Martin turns up, called
by Ian to check on Cindy, and they grass
her up. He is furious at Sonia. Martin is also
trying to keep Rebecca away from Sonia.
And rebellious Rebecca wants to change her
name back to Chloe
Also MIA: Phil left town on some sort of
Kathy-related emergency, leaving Sharon to

ing after his shop, so as Mary points out to

Julie, shes in the middle of the Venn diagram,
looking after anything else. We must play
to our strengths, says Mary to Julie,
and yours are stitching knickers and looking
cheery in a cardi.
Owens ex-wife Linda arrives. She hasnt
been seen since she walked out on the kids
when they were babies. Owen had told the
girls that the reason their mum left was because she couldnt handle Izzys disability,
but the truth was she had an affair. Linda
waltzes back into their lives, theres tears
and anger and then Katie starts meeting her
mum in private, clearly wanting to get close
while Izzys anger continues to keep her away
from the woman who deserted them both.
Jenny Bradley returns to the Street after
she meets Kevin Webster via an online
dating site. He takes her to the Rovers for
a drink. Ritas less than impressed to see
Jenny, her foster-child who turned out to be
a gold-digger.
Tony and Tracys affair is almost revealed
when Ken and Amy return to the Barlows
where Tracy is upstairs playing tapes to
Tony in her room. She bundles Tony into
the out-house in the yard and she gets away
with her shenanigans, this time. Meanwhile
Liz dolls herself up for a night with Tony. As
Liz is slapping on the slap, Tracy and Tony
drive off in the van to pick up stolen goods

for the shop. Theyre stopped by the cops

on their return, making them late back and
Tony leaves Tracy to unload the boxes into
the shop on her own. Theres one box that
she hasnt got space for and brings it into
the Rovers back room just as Liz storms in
to find out whats going on. Liz doesnt like
the cosy scene she encounters in the back
room Tony! With Tracy! Looking shifty! And
a mystery box! Tony comes clean to Liz about
the stolen goods but stays schtum about
Tracy. Liz isnt daft though, she knows summats going on and bars Tracy from the pub.
Jason, were over, says Eva as she
leaves the Street and flies off to France to
stay with her gran.
With Eva gone, the Rovers needs a new
barmaid and Eileen steps into the breach.
Shes not the greatest barmaid the world has
ever seen. In fact shes terrible but shes so
bad shes great to watch. Liz gives her new
barmaid some advice. Do summat wi yer
hair, and whatever you do, dont be yerself.
Steve tells his mum: That woman is guilty of
hideous crimes against beer, and Liz quickly
regrets taking her on. When Todd comes in
and finds his mum replacing Eva as the new
barmaid he says: Its like theyve lost Marilyn
Monroe and found Nora Batty!

hots for Kush, which she expresses by being
nasty to him. Then when she decides not to
be, she pushes too fast, telling Masood they
are about to get married, which Masood announces to a surprised Kush, and thats the
end of that. But more important (I think) is
what we recently found out about Shabnam.
She has become friends with Stacey, and in
conversation we find out that there had been
some sort of undefined incident/hookup with
Dean, in a club bathroom, shortly before she
left to travel the world a few years ago. And
she had a baby that she abandoned. My
question is, given what we have since found
out about Dean, will we eventually find out
that that incident with Dean was rape?
And what of Dean He doesnt know to
leave well enough alone, so he returns to
the Square and to the Vic to confront victim

Linda and Mick, and when it doesnt go well,

he returns again, sneaks into the store room
with a can of gasoline (they really should
lock that door. Seriously.), and tries to blow
the place up. But he is caught by Nancy who
tries to talk him around. Then Mick walks in
and Dean takes Nancy hostage and lighter in
hand, threatens to blow them all up, and just
like Billy Jack, Mick goes berserk. Nancy gets
away and Mick beats Dean to a pulp as Nancy
is screaming for him to stop. And with Dean
on the ground and his boot on Deans throat,
Mick yells at Nancy to get out. She does and
Mick and Dean both disappear. When Mick
returns, he refuses to talk about it and Nancy
is convinced he killed Dean and Mick is looking guilty (but who doesnt around here?) Is
he dead or alive? You know the way it goes

like to give a heartfelt welcome to Ms

delightful lady who
specializes in PR. Sarah was born in Kampala, Uganda, raised in Kenya, completing
her education at West Heath in Sevenoaks,

HERSHEY
Weve also given her a real challenge over
the continuing Hershey Company chocolate
controversy as the British Ambassador Sir
Peter Westmacott and Consul General Chris
OConnor have informed us that their hands
are tied as its a civil matter, but admit to

liking and indulging in Cadbury UK chocolate.

Write the CEO of Hershey Company John
Bilbrey by emailing him at johnbilbrey@
hersheys.com or independentdirectors@
hersheys.com Bilbrey has not returned our
phone calls or emails, so we have now put
the same request to Mondelez UK and are
awaiting their response. We understand
from one shop keeper that Hershey/Cadbury
states on the wrapper, if you are unhappy in
anyway, please return for a full refund. So
that is exactly what hes doing! Wonder how
many other customers that dont like Cadbury
US have done the same thing?
We would like to ask if its just him, or is
his entire board and stockholders happily
smiling with kisses, ready to throw thousands
of British/Irish shopkeepers under the bus?
Denying them the right to earn a living with
freedom of choice to sell our Cadbury UK,
which we all grew up with, and not the phony
Hershey products made in Mexico, calling its
Cadburys Dairy Milk chocolate, putting the
Queens Seal of Approval on their wrapper,
totally deceiving the general public.
Have we really reached the stage in life
where we really dont have freedom anymore? Choice of what we can or cannot eat,
all at the whim of a CEO? Is one man so powerful? That doesnt bode well for the future?
APOLOGY
Our apologies to Congresswoman Janice

Lawyer: Phone Hacking

Rife At Mirror Tabloids
A LAWYER for phone-hacking victims
says the illegal practice was rife at
tabloids owned by Britains Trinity Mirror PLC.
David Sherborne said last month that the
Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and People
tabloids likely conducted illegal eavesdropping for several years from mid-1999.
Sherborne is representing plaintiffs
including actress Sadie Frost, actor Shane
Ritchie and former soccer player Paul Gascoigne. A High Court judge is hearing a case
by eight claimants that will set guidelines
for damages to be paid to hacking victims.
Britains phone-hacking scandal erupted in 2011 with the revelation of wrongdoing at the Rupert Murdoch-owned News
of the World. The furor led to the closure
of that paper and the arrests of dozens of
journalists.
The police investigation initially focused
on Murdochs papers, but has spread to
other companies.

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

To The Budget And Beyond!

TODAY as I write was UK Budget Day! As
a total non-event, this must be a winner. Even
more so when its occurring a few weeks
before an election, so the overall requirement
must be dont upset anyone!
As expected the provision I mentioned last
month on the sale of UK residential property
by non-residents is coming into effect from
April 5, 2015. Two clarifications were made;
the first may be helpful, the second less so,
unless you know about it in advance. Firstly,
if you sell a UK property which has been
your main private residence in the past, you
can sell it at any time up to October 6, 2016
and obtain the benefit of a full exemption
from UK capital gains tax. This is because
you can always include the last 18 months
when claiming the main residence exemption,
so this will run between April 6, 2015 and
October 6, 2016.
The second point is relevant if you sell a
UK property after you return to living in the
UK. In this case, you will be due to pay tax on
the entire gain, not only the part that is higher
than the April 2015 valuation. This could
make a big difference to your tax liability. If
you sell before you return to the UK, your gain
will be calculated from the re-based value this
spring, but if you sell after you return to the
UK, the entire gain is subject to tax.
INFORMATION
The UK government is very keen on the
exchange of information, particularly with the
US government and even if the information is
mainly going from there to here! They have
introduced something called the Common
Reporting Standard which is intended to
apply globally from 2017. I think we can
assume it will be applied with varying levels
of diligence by different countries, but the
UK is likely to be more compliant than most.
A third item I picked up from the UK
Budget documents is a wonderful nine-page
booklet entitled Making tax easier: The end

of the tax return. At this time of year the very

idea produces hilarity, panic and disbelief in
equal measure. If you have ever had trouble
negotiating a website that was intended to
be helpful and have felt just the teeniest bit
annoyed or frustrated by the whole process
(I cant believe its just me), I do recommend
this booklet. It acts as proof that civil servants
operate in a parallel universe!
ACCOUNT
The idea is that individuals (only UK resident ones, we are still filing tax returns for
the foreseeable future) and businesses will
have a digital tax account, which they can
access from phones, tablets, watches and
even computers! No security risk there then!
Theres an ominous reference to information
already held by HMRC, which suggests to me
there will be a roll-out of an equivalent to the
1099 forms in the UK. Once FATCA required
financial institutions to provide information
to HMRC about US taxpayers, you can see it
isnt too big a step for the UK government to
ask for the same details about every investor
and account holder.
So were living in a world where all sorts
of information about us is being passed between governments. Ive had many enquiries
recently about the taxation of UK pensions,
both state and from previous employers.
As Im sure you know, and the exchange of
information must make even clearer, whether
you bring a pension into the US or not is
irrelevant in terms of tax liability. If youre
a US tax resident, your worldwide income
needs to be declared here.
TAX
The UK doesnt deduct tax from state pension payments. This is not because the state
pension is tax-free; it isnt, not here and not in
the UK. In the UK, they take account of state
pension to be received by a taxpayer when
issuing a tax coding.
I absolutely accept the IRS are unlikely to
issue a major investigation into people receiving UK pensions and not declaring them. But
if they receive a list from the UK government,
no investigation is really necessary. They
simply have to send out one letter to everyone
on the list and ask for amended tax returns.
Its just too easy!
Mary-Heather Styles has recently started
receiving a UK state pension herself, so the
issues are very close to home! She is an
Enrolled Agent here and legally qualified in
the UK, which makes a total of 30+ (suitably
vague!) years giving tax advice. She can be
contacted at (602) 845-1420 or mhstyles@

Police Charge 10 People

In Child Sex Exploitation
PROSECUTORS have charged 10 men
with sexual offenses against girls as young
as 13 in a case that has stirred racial tensions in Rochdale, northern England.
The Crown Prosecution Service said in
a statement last month that the offenses
include rape and sexual activity with a
child. They are alleged to have occurred
between 2005 and 2013 and relate to seven
girls. The victims were between 13 and 23
at the time of the abuse.
The case stirred tensions in Rochdale
because many of the men were of Pakistani or Afghan origin, and their victims
were white.
Two of the men, Afraz Ahmed and
David Law, are in custody. All three were
due to make court appearances.

Down The
Darkest Road
by Tami Hoag

LAUREN LAWTON was now 42 and for twenty

years had lived an idyllic life in Santa Barbara
with her husband Lance and later her daughters Leslie and Leah. They lived in a lovely
house at the end of a dead end road, restful
and peaceful. That was until her life began
a downward spiral. Her daughter Leslie had
disappeared and two years later her husband,
unable to come to grips with the situation,
commits suicide. After everything Lauren
decides to move to Oak Knoll to start over.
Now with just Leah left Lauren struggles to
get through each day. She knows exactly who
took her eldest daughter but there is no shred
of evidence against the
man and the police and
pretty everyone else
thinks Lauren has lost
her mind. She gets
through each day on
a diet of protein bars
and sports drinks, and
in the evenings wine.
Leah is going
through her own
troubles, trying to deal
with a mother who is
distant and drives her crazy with her paranoia
everytime Leah tries to go somewhere. Leah
feels guilty for resenting her sister and knowing
when she was going out that night but never
telling anyone about it. Leslie always was
closer to her mother than Leah.
Lauren has really let herself go, she had
always had all the up to date fashions and had
her hair and makeup just right. Now she just
pulls on a t-shirt and jeans, puts on a pair of
large sunglasses and no makeup.
One day as she is in the market shopping
she is sure she sees the man that abducted
Leslie. She crashes her cart into a man in the
store. Meanwhile the man she believes to be
the abductor turns and runs and she escapes
into the ladies room. Later she sees the van
hes in going down the street. She follows it,
she can hardly breathe. Was it really him? Is
she losing her mind? As she follows him she
sees a flashing light behind her oh great
shes being pulled over by the police. As it
turns out this is the man she crashed her cart
into at the store Detective Mendez. He questions her and remembers her daughters case.
They talk for awhile Lauren just wants to get
going the conversation does not go very well,
she explains that everyone thinks shes crazy
and maybe she is but really can she just leave.
Detective Mendez doesnt r eally know what to
think but gives her his card and asks her to call
him if she needs anything.
Mendez talks to his contacts in Santa Barbara to get information on the case and gets
the same shes crazy opinion from anyone
involved. Lauren hasnt made any friends,
simply because shes a determined mom
who knows what happened and is beyond
frustrated that nothing is being done about it.
Understandable for sure.
She does track the killer down and it will
keep you on the edge of your seat as he contacts her with written notes, meets her younger
daughter Leah at the stables where she rides,
makes friends with her. Mendez tries to help
her but she doesnt know whether to trust him.
She tries to do things on her own and nearly
gets killed in the process. Lauren meets one
of the moms of the riding group and the gal
happens to be a psychiatrist and has been
through some similar herself so she gradually gets Lauren to trust and accept her help.
There is so much detail to go into but I dont
want to give it away. Some of it is quite graphic
and terrifying. It can be hard to read at times,
especially if you are a parent.
There are some amazing twists and turns
and some surprises along the way and at
the end so grab this one and strap yourself
in for a rollercoaster ride!

PRINCE CHARLES and his wife finished up their visit to Washington, DC with
a whirlwind day that included meeting with President Barack Obama last month.
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall began March 19 with a visit
to the US Armed Forces Retirement Home, where residents lined the corridors
waiting for the royal couple. They stopped and chatted with residents one by one.
Later in the day, Prince Charles is visited a charter school for adult immigrants,
while his wife Camilla toured a forensic sciences center.
The couple then met with Obama and Vice President Joe Biden at the White
House before a number of other events.
The couple arrived in the US March 17, and the trip marked Prince Charles
20th visit to the US.

Prince William Takes On

Diplomatic Role In China
PRINCE WILLIAM presented Chinas
president with an invitation from the queen
for him to visit Britain this year, as the
prince last month began the first official
trip to mainland China by a senior British
royal in a generation.
President Xi Jinping told the prince that
he thanked the Queen for the invitation. I
look forward to meeting her majesty and
other British leaders during the visit and to
jointly plan out the future of Sino-British
relations, Xi said during the meeting in
the Great Hall of the People, the seat of
Chinas legislature. The British royal
family has great influence, not just in Britain but across the world.
The princes three-day trip to Beijing,
Shanghai and southwest China near the
border with Myanmar tested his diplomatic
mettle as the second in line to the throne.
PROTESTS
He didnt visit Hong Kong, the former
colony Britain handed back to China in
1997. It was the scene last year of weekslong pro-democracy protests, during
which Beijing prevented a British parliamentary committee from traveling to Hong
Kong to investigate political reform there,
saying it did not want Britain interfering
in its internal affairs.
William told Xi and the rest of the
Chinese delegation, including Yang Jiechi,
the governments senior foreign policy adviser, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, that

he was looking forward to strengthening

relations between the countries.
Im particularly interested in the young
people and seeing how the next generation
develops and is aware of the world as it
is, he added.
He spent most of his time chatting
with representatives of charities helping
children with hearing and visual impairments, whose parents are migrant workers
or in prison, and some of the young people
they work with.
PRESENTED
Before he left, William was presented
with a picture drawn by a 10-year-old of
crops, lush vegetation and bright pink, red
and blue buildings.
That will look nice in Georges
bedroom, he said, referring to his oneyear-old son.
The prince opened an exhibition in
Shanghai that showcases British innovation in entertainment, design, health care
and fashion.
He met with Chinese business leaders there, including Jack Ma, an English
teacher-turned-founder of e-commerce
giant Alibaba, which raised $25bn in its
initial public offering last year.
Relations between Britain and China got
back on track after Beijing suspended highlevel diplomatic contacts for 14 months
after Prime Minister David Cameron met
with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the
Dalai Lama, in May 2012.

UNFORTUNATELY, although America has

some of the top Medical institutions in the
world, for non-immigrants seeking long term
care, the opportunity to be treated in these
institutions is often hampered by immigration regulations that deny admission and
visa eligibility to those unfortunate people
who have been infected with what the Immigration and Nationality Act considers to
be a Communicable Disease of Public
Health Significance. INA Sec.212(a)(1).
For example, expats with diseases such as
Infectious Tuberculosis will be denied visas
due to the governments fear that they will
spread the disease once in the United States.
While this general regulation may not appear to affect British citizens already in the
United States, it should be remembered that
nonimmigrant visas always come to end on
a specified date. Prior to that date, the visa
holder must extend, change, or adjust their
status. Otherwise, they must depart from
the United States and re-enter in another
immigration category at a later date.
For those visa holders that have contracted
a communicable disease and are presently
in the United States, extending or changing
their status without departing the United
States would appear to be the best option due
to the fact that for most visas, an extension
of status if granted, does not require that the
beneficiary depart the country and apply for a
new visa based on the extension. This way,

the person can complete their authorized stay

in the United States and receive necessary
treatment for their disease without being
forced to go through the humiliation of a visa
denial based on the disease.
It should also be remembered that mental
disorders and certain addictions are also
considered to be categories that the State
Department will exercise its discretion to
deny an applicant a visa. Thus, for those of
you who cannot extend status, are applying
for a visa to the US Embassy in London or
are in the United States presently trying to
adjust status, there is a difficult road ahead.
Nevertheless, as is the case with almost
everything, there is a little bit of light at the
end of the tunnel for those that qualify for
the available waivers to the initial finding of
inadmissibility. The waivers generally come
into play when the applicant can show an
immediate family relationship to a US citizen, Permanent Resident or Immigrant visa
holder. However, before considering if a
waiver is available to you, you should consult
with an immigration attorney first with specific questions to your own particular case.

Lawmakers Urge UK To Be More Outspoken On Hong Kong

A PARLIAMENTARY committee is urging the government to be more outspoken
in support of democracy in Hong Kong.
The Foreign Affairs Committee said
British officials have failed to clearly state
their position on democratic developments
in the Chinese territory, and warned that it
could damage Britains reputation there.
They stressed that Britain can and
should take a position on democracy.

Tens of thousands of people in Hong Kong

turned out for pro-democracy protests that
rocked the city for weeks last year. The
student-led protesters occupied key streets
to demand the removal of restrictions in
place for 2017 elections.
The report also criticised British officials for not summoning the Chinese
ambassador after China banned British
lawmakers from visiting Hong Kong.

n FOOTIE FANS of FLORIDA This lifelong

Tottenham fan has just discovered there is a

huge Arsenal Supporters Club which packs
Elwoods British Pub in downtown Miami for
every EPL match. Miami is the undisputed
soccer mecca for our state, hence David
Beckhams choice last year for his planned
USA team, but this amazed me. I happen
to see MASC as its called, featured on the
TV news, passionate Arsenal Gunners red
strip wearing fans, a mix of expat Brits and
Miamians. It is run by an expat Arsenal fan
Chris Allan. To get involved, call Chris on
(786) 390-2835. This got me thinking about
Floridas other expat supporters clubs: The
long-established Liverpool Supporters Club
is run by SuperScouse Roy Yates based in
Lighthouse Point. Call him for details on
(954) 942-7330. Theres also one in Tampa
too to keep expat Reds smiling. See www.lfctampa.com. Florida Scots are blessed with
Celtic and Rangers Supporters clubs which
meet in Ft. Lauderdale, at separate pubs of
course to avoid their legendary rivalry!
PALM BEACH. Now running till May
24, 2015: A wonderful exhibition called HIGH
TEA, of particular interest to the large British
community there. (In the late 90s I founded

n UK-USA Culture Corner. We expats
cannot fail to notice the puritanical attitude
of Americans, shocked at the most benign
things. On TV inexplicably they bleep out
calling a woman a bitch, a totally dictionary respectable word for female dog, or
Goddamn, a bare breast in a contextually
suitable bedroom scene the list is endless.
However UK TV goes too far, just to show
off how progressive we are by airing the F
and C words gratuitously vile in my opinion. Aware of the sensibility of Americans,
the BBC producers decided that because
its new Tudor drama Wolf Hall, to be sold
to America, actors would be issued very
small codpieces. Regular size codpieces
as worn by Tudor men were deemed too
alarming for American viewers. (Weve all
seen the colossal one on Henry VIIIs armour
in the Tower of London, considered by many
to be just the Kings vain wishful thinking).
The actor who plays Thomas Cromwell,
told media it was decided codpieces should
be tucked away because viewers, particularly Americans may not know exactly
whats going on down there.

n FROM MY ARCHIVES. I used to write

for the now defunct Florida Brit Magazine

and for this newspaper for 23 years, so
decided to share some gems from the past:
I wanted to show some visiting friends
from the UK a genuine slice of Americana,
so decided wed take my car to the Topless
Carwash in Ft Lauderdale. This is where
soapy young men and women slither over
your car in near-naked splendour apparently. I havent been yet because calling for
directions, I heard an unmistakable British
accent. The place is being ably and avidly
operated on weekends by Brits Terry and
Christine Marshall, for almost two years. It
was also featured in an article by the Sun
Newspaper in UK. The American owner
told me since the Sun Article no stranger
to bare breasts the hands-on place has
cleaned up. Readers who think theyd like to
export the money-making venture to UK had
better figure out how to keep the icicles off

Blatter Concerned By
Russian Soccer Racism
Before World Cup
RR By Rob Harris

FIFA PRESIDENT Sepp Blatter says hes

concerned by a study highlighting the scale
of Russias racism problem ahead of the
2018 World Cup.
The Fare network organization and the
Moscow-based SOVA Center detailed dozens
of cases of discriminatory behavior linked to
Russian football over two seasons.
The report has been received by FIFA
and Blatter told The Associated Press: I am
aware of the report ... sure we are concerned,
definitely.
Last year, Blatter spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin about making tackling
racism a priority in 2018.
Blatter says if it does not stop then there
must be some sanctions.
Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting in
Northern Ireland, Blatter added: Racism is
one of the items which is on my agenda on
the very top, every day.

Dave Whelan Resigns As

Chairman Of Wigan

DAVE WHELAN has resigned as chairman

of second-tier English club Wigan after serving a six-week ban for racially-aggravated
misconduct.
The 78-year-old Whelan was fined
50,000, warned about his future conduct
and ordered to undertake a mandatory education course after saying to The Guardian
newspaper last year I think Jewish people
do chase money more than everybody else.
I dont think thats offensive at all.
In a statement on Wigans website,
Whelan says the time has now come to
hand over the reins.
Whelan will remain owner of the club
and will be succeeded as chairman by his
23-year-old grandson.

Kane Gets First England CallUp After Rapid Rise At Spurs

STRIKER Harry Kane was called up by England for the first time last month after a rapid
rise from the fringes of Tottenhams squad
to becoming a key component of the team.
The 21-year-old Kane has scored 26
goals in 42 games so far in his breakthrough
season at Tottenham, and was voted Premier
League player of the month in January and
February.
Huge honor to be called up to the England
squad, Kane, who has played for Englands
under-21s team, wrote on Twitter. Very

proud day for me and my family!

Kane was hoping to make his England
debut in the European Championship qualifier
against Lithuania March 27 or the friendly in
Italy four days later.
Only Diego Costa of Chelsea and Manchester Citys Sergio Aguero have scored
more goals than Kane in the league.

30 years, and is one of the most respected

managers in the world after spells with Ajax,
Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and AZ Alkmaar.
He has also had two stints in charge of
the Netherlands.

Raheem Sterlings Contract

Talks On Hold With Liverpool

SUNDERLAND fired manager Gus Poyet last

month in a late attempt to retain its place in
the Premier League.
The 47-year-old Uruguayan leaves Sunderland after less than 18 months in charge
with the team a point above the relegation
zone with nine games to go. Sunderland has
won only four of its 29 league matches the
same as last-place Leicester.
Sunderland announced that former Netherlands coach Dick Advocaat has been hired
until the end of the season. But the 67-yearold Advocaat, has never managed in England.

LIVERPOOL forward Raheem Sterling and his

agent have put contract talks on hold until the
end of the season as speculation about his
future continues to grow.
The club have been in negotiations over a
new deal to replace the 20-year-olds existing
contract which expires in the summer of
2017 for several months now.
Manager Brendan Rodgers has previously
said Liverpool have offered him an incredible offer but after further talks lastmonth
failed to reach a satisfactory conclusion the
saga has been postponed until the current
campaign is over.
With contract negotiations dragging on
Sterling has found himself linked with some
of Europes top clubs, with Manchester City
the latest to be linked after reports said they
were considering a 50m bid.
Rodgers dismissed that and all other
links with.

Away Goals Rule Outdated In

Euro Matches Says Wenger

ARSENAL manager Arsene Wenger does

not believe English football is suffering a
European crisis with no teams in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, but has
called for the outdated away goals rule to
be changed.
Manchester City followed the Gunners and
Chelsea out of the elite club competition when
beaten by Barcelona last month.
It is the second time in three seasons
there will be no English team through to
the Champions League quarter-finals, when
there had been finalists in seven of the eight
years from 2005.
Wenger whose side reached the 2006
final, but have not been past the last 16 for
five campaigns in a row after their defeat to
Monaco sees no reason to hold an inquest.

Van Gaal Set To Retire When

Spell At Man United Ends

DUTCH COACH Louis van Gaal says he will

retire from football at the end of his spell in
charge of Manchester United.
The 63-year-old Van Gaal told The Daily
Telegraph that this is my last job. For sure.
I have to pay attention to my kids, my grandchildren, but also to my wife.
Van Gaal, who has a contract with United
until 2017, has been coaching for almost

Police Arrest Teen For Racist

Tweet Aimed At Welbeck

POLICE have arrested a 15-year-old boy

for a racist tweet aimed at Arsenal striker
Danny Welbeck.
The unnamed boy was held and questioned on suspicion of racial abuse following
the posting of a message on Twitter after Welbeck scored the winner against Manchester
United last month in the FA Cup.
Wiltshire Police in southwest England say
the boy has been released on bail until April
13, adding the investigation is ongoing.
Welbeck spent six seasons at United after
coming through the clubs youth system
before being sold to Arsenal last year.

On Track For
Championship

Irelands Robbie Henshaw, Left, is tackled by Scotlands Jonny Gray, right,

during their Six Nations rugby union international match at Murrayfield
stadium, Edinburgh, Scotland, Saturday, March 21, 2015.
Week Five

Italy 20 Wales 61
Scotland 10 Ireland 40
England 55 France 35
This was an amazing final day with fabulous rugby and astonishing scoring. The three
games produced 221 points and 25 tries.
First, Wales took Italy apart in Rome in
a brilliant second-half display in which they
ran up 47 points but crucially conceded a
converted try in the final minute. This was the
score that was key to the whole days action.
Ireland then made mincemeat of a feeble
Scottish team who seemed to be helping the
Irish to a huge score, possibly to set England

an impossible target in the final match.

France never quite gave up as England
raced to a try in the first minute then racked
up the points with five more tries. The home
side were a converted try short when time
ran out as England pressed the French line.

Round Three
Scotland 19 Italy 22
France 13 Wales 20
Ireland 19 England 9
Scotlands slow decline as a major rugby
nation continued when they conceded a
last-minute penalty try. This brought up the
number of Italys Six Nations wins to 12 in
15 years. Over the samer period Scotland
have won six more matches. Over the past
15 years, Italy have ended with 10 wooden
spoons to Scotlands three.
Once more the home side could rue
chances that went begging but truth to tell
they never had the beating of the Italy pack
whose powerful scrummaging forced the
match-winning penalty right on the final
whistle. If you werent an Italian, it was a
game to forget.
Wales took on France looking to extend
their winning sequence to four matches. They
enjoyed far more possession with the Welsh
midfield constantly poking holes in the French
defence. They owed much to the kicking of
Leigh Halfpenny with five penalties. Highlight
of the Welsh game was a magnificent try for
Alistair Biggar.
Apart from that it was frankly quite a boring
match with Wales over-reliant on powerful
penetrating running and the French never
quite timing their fluent movement.
England went to Dublin with high hopes

but the more experienced Irish squad simply

squeezed the life out of them. Much of the
damage was inflicted by Johnny Sexton with
the boot. In particular his up and unders, aka
garryowens, caused endless damage with
the only try of the game, scored by Robbie
Henshaw (Brian ODriscolls successor)
coming directly from such a kick.
England looked ragged, and gave away
too many kickable penalties, leaving Ireland
almost certain to notch up consecutive Six
Nations championships with a Grand Slam
very much on the cards...as long as they
could beat Wales in Cardiff.
Round Four
Wales 23 Ireland 16
England 25 Scotland
Italy 0 France 29
This was one of the intensest and most
exciting games in Six Nations history. Ireland
were going for the Gland Slam and their 11th
victory on the trot but Wales were simply
magnificent in defence and apart from penalty
goals yielded only a penalty try late in the
second half.
Wales led throughout with penalties from
Leigh Halfpenny asnd an Alistair Biggar dropgoal but it was Scott Williams who sealed
the win with a incisive break and flashing
try. Both sides left the field more or less out
on their feet, having participated in a show
that makes the Six Nations the most exciting
rugby tournament.in the world.
England huffed, puffed and fluffed but
eventually ran out clear winners against
Scotland, scoring three tries to one. England
remained in pole position to win the championship for the first time since 2011 though it
would have to be on points difference.
It has to be remembered that England had
half a side absent through injury but still they
missed at least four clearcut try opportunities,
their game suffering at crucial moments from
a lack of precision. In George Ford at flyhalf
they have uncovered a rare creative talent.
Coach Stuart Lancaster must be praying his
men find the accuracy to capitalise on him.
Italy struggled pointlessly against a marginally less inept France. In truth there was
only going to be one winner in this sc rappy
rain-affected encounter. The French were
happy to win at last after two home defeats
but are unlikely to worry anyone in the World
Cup that lies ahead.

Britain Beats The USA In

Davis Cup Encounter

THE EMIRATES Arena in Glasgow, was full

capacity, 7,700 persons for the Davis Cup

along with a 6-1, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win over
Donald Young, while James Ward fought his
heart to out to come from a two set deficit,
beating John Isner 6-7 (5-7) 5-7, 7-6 (7-3)
15-13. Britains doubles pair on the second
day, Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot was up

6-2, 6-7 (8-10) 9-7. Murray would prevail
7-6 (7-4) 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) over John Isner,
putting Britain in an uncatchable winning
3-1, score-line. James Ward won the first
set against Donald Young, but pulled out with
an injury leaving a 3-2 victory for Britain over
the Americans, that repeated a similar result
last year in San Diego. Britains non-playing
skipper Leon Smith was delighted, while
John Courier, the American captain was left
scratching his head. Britain will meet France
in the quarter-finals in July, at a venue to be
decided. Davis Cups reigning champions
Switzerland were beaten by Belgium 3-2.
Earlier, Andy Murray reached the quarterfinals of the Dubai Championship, before a
surprise exit by the Croatian, Borna Coric
who won 6-1, 6-3. Hed earlier dispatched
Gilles Mueller of Luxemburg and Portugals
Joao Sousa. Fellow Brit James Ward, was
in the singles draw too, but went out in the
first round to Feliciano Lopez.

has not produced any scintillating results
for England. After losses to New Zealand
and Australia, and a win over Scotland,
England was fairly crushed by Sri Lanka
at Wellington by nine wickets. Joe Root
pressed forward making a 121 run total, but
Englands bowlers never got to grips with the
Sri Lankan batsmen. England 309 (Joe Root
121)-6 at 50 overs. Sri Lanka 321 (Lahiru
Thirimanne 139, Kumar Sangakkara 117)-1
at close. Englands precarious and tenuous
performance at this World Cup, reached its
conclusion, March 9, when Bangladesh
beat them by 15 runs at Adelaide, ultimately
eliminating them from the quarter-final stages
of the competition. Bangladesh 275 (Mohammed Mahamudullah 103)-7 at 50 overs.
England 260 all out. England completed their
pool schedule with a nine wickets win over
Afghanistan, where rain interfered and the
Duckworth-Lewis system was used to decide
the result. Afghanistan 11-7 at 36.2 overs.
England were given a total of 101 runs, which
they reached with the loss of one wicket.
After losing to England by 119 runs,
Scotland lost to Afghanistan by one wicket
with just three balls left to play. Scotland
210 all out. Afghanistan 211-9 at close.
Kyle Coetzer smashed an awe inspiring 156
against Bangladesh, but the bowlers could
not cope with the batsmen and lost by six
wickets. Scotland 318 (Kyle Coetzer 156)-8
at 50 overs. Bangladesh 322-4 at close. At
Hobart, Scotlands losing streak continued as
they lost by 148 runs to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka
363-9 at 50 overs. Scotland 215 all out.
At Hobart the Australians won by seven
wickets in the final match pool series. Scotland 130 all out. Australia 133-3 at close.
After defeating the West Indies in an
earlier game, Ireland landed the scalps of
Zimbabwe winning by just five runs. Ireland
331 (Ed Joyce 112)-8 at 50 overs. Zimbabwe
326 (Brendan Taylor 121) all out. West
Indian batsmen, Chris Gayle, went in to the
world cricket cup history books for the first
double century ever, when he hit 200 against
Zimbabwe.

Golf

Britains Paul Casey edged in to a three

way play-0ff in the Northern Trust Open in
California, where a six under 278, had him
tied with James Hahn and Dustin Johnson.
A missed putt on the second play-off hole
saw Casey make his exit, while James Hahn
would claim his first PGA title. The Honda
Classic at the Palm Beaches, Florida, that
concluded March 1, saw Tiger absent, Rory
McIIroy did not survive the cut, but Irelands
Padraig Harrington carried the day winning
a play-off against rookie Daniel Berger, after
both had finished with six under pars. Its the
first victory for the Dubliner in some time.
Paul Casey and Ian Poulter, were one stroke
back. Same weekend, Nuneaton golfer Andy
Sullivan, claimed his second South African
success within a few weeks, after winning the
Johannesburg Open with a 17 under 270. He
was two strokes ahead of the field, and struck
seven birdies on his final round. Hed won the
South African Open just weeks earlier.
An irate Rory McIIroy chucked his three
iron in to the water during the first round of
the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Trump
National, Doral, Florida, where later, Donald
Trump, hired a diver to retrieve the Irishman
club. It did not help McIIroy much however,
as he finished eight strokes behind eventual
winner Dustin Johnson, who carded a nine
under 279. JB Holmes fired off a 62 during
the first round, which had The Donald, conversing with officials that the course needed
toughening up. It was.

Boxing: Tyson Fury & Carl

Frampton Retain Titles

The month of March was brought in

with series of boxing contests as Britains
best faced physical violence across the
ring. Martin Murray failed to dislodge the
unbeaten Russian, Gennady Golovkin (32-0)
from the WBA middleweight crown in Monte
Carlo, late February. The 32-year-old St
Helens fighter was down twice in the fourth
and again in the tenth, but continued bravely
on before the referee intervened in the 11th
round. The unbeaten Carl Frampton
(20-0) kept his IBF super-bantamweight
crown at Belfast, February 28, after a fifth
round stoppage of his Californian challenger,
Chris Avalos (25-3). Frampton confidently

moving forward against his opponent, and

is looking for a match-up with the unbeaten
Brit, Scott Quigg, who holds the WBA title.
Same weekend at the 02 Arena in London,
British heavyweight champion Tyson Fury
(24-0) battered Christian Hammer (17-4)
in to submission and retained his European
heavyweight crown. The six foot nine inch
Fury, pushed his aggression against the
Romanian, whose corner threw in the
towel, and he did not come out for the ninth
round. Also on the card, was Chris Eubank
Jr (19-1), who never put Dmitry Chudinov
(14-1-2) on the canvas, but the ref decided
the Russian had taken enough and stopped
it in the twelfth round. Eubank is looking for
a return fight with Billy Joe Saunders after
losing to the world champion recently.
Former IBF bantamweight champion Paul
the baby faced assassin Butler, dropped
down a weight to challenge Zolaini Tete
(20-3) for his IBF super-flyweight title at the
Echo Arena, Liverpool, March 7. The South
African south-paw caught the Ellesmere Port
fighter with a vicious upper-cut in the eighth
round that had Butler canvas bound, and his
first defeat in 17 fights.

Lizzy Arnold, World Skeleton

Champion, Double Gold

Lizzy Arnold who won skeleton gold

in the European championship earlier this
year, became world champion at Winterberg,
Germany, March 7, at the World Skeleton
Championships. She beat the track record
twice during her run, beating Germanys
Jacqueline Loelling by 0.067 of a second.
Four runs with a time of under four minutes
gave her the crown.
The European Athletic and Track Championships in Prague, the Czech Republic,
March 6-8, witnessed two gold medals
for Britain as the squad came away with a
total of nine podium appearances. Katarina
Johnson-Thompson captured the Pentathlon
with a collection of 5,000 points, just 13
points off the world record. Richard Kilty
took the gold medal in the 60m sprint, while
Dina Asher-Smith got silver in the womens
race. Lucy Hatton and Serita Solomon took
silver and bronze in the 60m hurdles, and
Seren Bundy-Davies got a bronze in the
400m, and a bronze too, for Chris OHare
in the 1500m. The womens 4 x 400m relay
squad took the silver.

four of the Volvo Ocean Race (formerly the
Whitbread-Round-the-World-Race) when
after over twenty days at sea sailing from
Sanya, China, the Spanish yacht MAPFRE
arrived at Auckland, New Zealand, barely five
minutes ahead of the second boat, the Abu
Dhabi Ocean Racing Team. MAPFRE is skippered by British seaman Ian Walker. They left
Auckland, March 19, after Typhoon Pam held
the race up for three days as 125mph winds
hit the area. The fleet heads for Itajai in Brazil
a distance of 6,776 nautical miles for the fifth
leg of the journey. The race ends at Gothenburg, Sweden, June 15 British cyclist and
sprint specialist Mark Cavendish, won the
one day Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne classic in
Belgium. For the Etixx-Quick-Step teamster,

holding off Djakam (10-1) in second place
by a length and a half. Road to Riches (8-1)
was third. 11 ran. The eight-year-old trained

by Martin Bradstock, was competing in only

his fourth race over fences.

Champions League Disaster

For English Clubs

The last sixteen of the Champions League

Cup, first legs February 24-25, witnessed
extreme distress for Manchester City and
Arsenal. At the Etihad Stadium, Luis Suarez,
broke Manchester hearts with goals in 16th
and 36th minutes, then Lionel Messi missed
a penalty. Sergio Aguero got one back for the
City in the 69th minute, while Gael Clichy was
red carded four minutes later, as Barcelona
left with a 2-1 first leg advantage. At the Nou
Camp, March 18, Barcelona surged forward
time and time again as the Sky Blues defense
had its hands completely full. Barcelonas
Ivan Rakitic turned the tide with a 31st minute
goal, and though City may have got back into
the game late, a missed penalty by Sergio
Aguero in the 78th minute gave the Spaniards
a 1-0 result for a winning 3-1 aggregate.
AS Monaco turned up the heat at the
Emirates Stadium, where they beat Arsenal
3-1. The Gunners never got going and goals
in the 38th, 53rd, and 86th minutes had the
visitors in control. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
put the hosts on the scoreboard in the last
minute, but Monaco gleefully came away with
a 3-1 result. Arsenal produced some sizzling
soccer in the second leg, March 17. Olivier
Griroud found the mark in the 36th minute
and Aaron Ramsey, got a second eleven
minutes from the end. The Gunners still
needed a goal to go through, but the Monaco
defense cobbled it together to claim an away
goal rules victory and into the quarter-finals.

Chelsea Out

Chelseas delirium and ecstasy on winning

the League Cup, caught a severe reality check
a few days later at Stamford Bridge, where
the Blues faced the second leg game against
Paris St Germain, March 11. Fans witnessed
a ten man French side muster a 2-2 tie, and
an away goal rules victory through to the
quarter-finals. Chelsea are out. Chelsea drew
1-1 in Paris in the first leg. A bitterly contested
match with too many physical tackles in a
rather bad tempered encounter saw PSGs
Zlatan Ibramovic controversially get his
walking orders in the 31st minute. It was the
81st minute before the ice was broken when
Gary Cayhill found the net, but ex-Blues man
David Luiz, equalized four minutes from time
producing a 2-2, two game aggregate and an
extra-30 minutes. Eden Hazard put away a
penalty in the 96th minute, but Thiago Silva
scored six minutes from time, and the away
goal rule (3-3) prevailed for the French side,
leaving Jose Mourinho momentarily stunned.

Europa League Exits For

British Clubs

Britains numbers went down in the second leg of the last 32 knockout round of the
Europa League Cup late February, where only
Everton survived. After taking a 4-1 away
win at BSC Young Boys, the Toffees won the
home leg 3-1. The Swiss went ahead in the
13th minute, but Romelu Lukaku, got a brace
and Mirallas added the third. Liverpools 1-0
win at Anfield, was not enough in Turkey,
where Besiktas scored in the 72nd minute
forcing the game in to extra-time. It went to a
penalty shoot-out with the hosts winning 5-4.
Tottenham needed goals in Italy after a 1-1
tie at White-Hart Lane, but Fiorentina scored
in the 54th and 71st minute to win 2-0 with a
winning aggregate of 3-1. Celtics 3-3 first
leg result at Parkhead, left them gamely fighting an uphill battle at San Siro, where a Fredy
Guarin goal two minutes from time, sunk
the Hoops and put Inter-Milan through 1-0.
Everton progressed to the knockout round
of the last sixteen, March 12-19. At Goodison
Park, Dynamo Kievs Oleg Gudsen shook
Roberto Martinezs outfit with a goal in the
14th minute. Steven Naismith put the toffees
level six minutes before the break and Rom-

gave Everton a 2-1 win over the Ukrainians.
The away leg proved a dramatic loss as the
Ukrainians won 5-2, securing a place in the
next round leaving Everton wanting. Romelu
Lukaku and Phil Jagielka put the Toffees on
the board, but the thrashing left English clubs
without a participant in the quarter-finals of
both European competitions since 1995.

Chelsea Win League Cup

Close to 90,000 fans jammed themselves

into Wembley Stadium, March 1, as Chelsea
beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the Capital
One English League Cup Final. For coach
Jose Mourinho, it was his seventh piece of
silverware won at Chelsea, but the first since
his return to the club last year. The Blues
oozed confidence from the start as Spurs
seemed to be suffering a hangover from their
recent elimination from the Europa League
Cup, just four days previous. A scramble in
the box on half-time, saw a loose ball find
its way to John Terrys feet and the Chelsea
skipper easily put the ball in the net. Diego
Costa fired off a shot in the 56th minute that
deflected into the Tottenham goal through
defender Kyle Walker. The celebrations were
ready to begin. Spurs made two desperate
changes in the last ten minutes, bringing on
Lamela and Soldado, but by that time the
damage had been done.
Englands womens side won the Cyprus
Cup for the third time in six years, beating
Canada 1-0, at Larnaca in the final. A goal
by Lianne Saunders, proved the winner.
The Cyprus Cup features a dozen international womens sides. England had earlier
dispatched Finland 3-1, Australia 3-0, and
tied 1-1 with the Netherlands. Scotlands
womens side were beaten by Canada 2-0,
and lost to Italy 3-2, but finished on a winning
note. They beat South Korea 2-1 and in the
final game, Netherlands 3-1.

FA Cup; United Outgunned,

Villa Beat Local Rivals

The quarter-finals of the FA Cup, March

6-8, had Aston Villa beating local rivals
West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at Villa Park, but
a pitch invasion and confrontation between
rival supporters at the end probably mean a
hefty fine for both sides. Fabian Delph had
the Villa up in the 51st minute, the Albion had
Claudio Yakob sent off ten minutes from the
end, before Villa struck for the second time
with a goal from Scott Sinclair in the 85th
minute. Villas Jack Grealish got a red card
in injury time Not many happy faces at Old
Trafford, (unless you were an Gunners fan)
where Manchester United went 2-1 down
to Arsenal. Nacho Monreal stunned the
United defence in the 25th minute, but Wayne
Rooney, made things even four minute later
with spectacular header. United reject, Danny
Welbeck, got the winner in the 61st minute.
Old Trafford collectively held its breath when
Angel Di Maria was sent off fourteen minutes
from the whistle First Divisions Bradford
City, earlier conquerors of Chelsea and
Sunderland, drew a capacity crowd at the
Valley Parade, but Championships Reading
held firm and a goalless game ensued. In
the replay March 16, the Royals took early
control of the game in the first ten minute with
two goals by Hal Robson-Kanu and Garath
McLeary. Bradford had Filipe Morais sent
off in the 63td minute, effectively surrendering
the game to Reading, who got a third five minutes later by Shane Mackie for a 3-0 winning
result At Anfield, Blackburn Rovers were
not intimidated by their surrounding and held
an eager Liverpool at bay, coming away with
a 0-0 result. The replay is April 8.

Scottish Soccer

Big scoring in the Scottish Championship, last Saturday of February, as Heart of

Midlothian slammed Cowdenbeath 10-0, in
a home goal scoring spree that included three
penalties, plus a hat-trick by Genero Zeefiuk.

Cowdenbeath had Lewis Toshney sent off

before the half-hour. Celtics run of nine
unbeaten matches was brought to an end by
St Johnstone, March 4, at Parkhead, where a
Danny Swanson goal nine minutes after the
break was enough to give the Saints victory.
The quarter-finals of the William Hill
Scottish Cup, March 6-8, witnessed a very
competitive and physical game at Tannadice,
where Dundee Utd held Celtic 1-1 in a game
that had three red cards issued. Dundees
Paul Palon and the Hoops Virgil van Dijk
were sent off after eleven minutes, followed
by the hosts Paul Dixon just after half-time.
Nadir Ciftci put a penalty away on the break,
and Leigh Griffiths put Celtic level in the 71st
minute. Hibernian overwhelmed Berwick
Rangers 4-0 at home, scoring twice in each
half. Queen of the South lost in front of a
home crowd as Falkirks Craig Sibbald
grabbed the only goal of the game in the
34th minute. Raith Rovers secured the other
semi-final place, after a 1-0 win at Inverness
CT, courtesy of a Danny Devine netting in
the 63rd minute The Celtic-Dundee Utd,
replay March 18, was not a tranquil affair
but the Hoops pulled out a defining 4-0
victory. Jason Denayer opened the scoring
in the 17th minute. Leigh Griffiths got one
after the break, then Kris Commons eleven
minutes from time and Virgil van Dijk in the
final minute. Near the end, Celtics Anthony
Stokes was red-carded, as was Uniteds
Ryan McGowan a few minutes later.
Celtic won the Scottish League Cup Final
at Hampden Park, March 15, beating Dundee
Utd 2-0. The Tangerines were playing without
suspended striker Nadir Ciftci, but a couple
of incidents with skipper Sean Dillon, pushed
the hoops to their 15th Scottish League Cup
success. Sean Dillon was off the field being
treated for an injury, when Kris Commons
netted in the 28th minute. Dillon was sent off
in the 56th minute, while James Forest scored
in the 79th minute and missed a penalty six
minutes later, For Dundee Utd, it was the fifth
consecutive League Cup final that they have
come away as losers.

Late Tennis

Andy Murray reached the semi-finals

of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells,
California, March 22, where old nemesis
Novak Djokovic proved too big of an hurdle
and ousted the Scot 6-2,6-3. Murray had
worked his way passed Vasek Pospisil of
Canada, Philipp Kohlschrieber of Germany,
and Frances Adrian Mannarino. The Scot
was hoping for a victory to couple with the
celebration of his marriage this month, to
his long time girl-friend Kim Sears, but the
nuptials to be held in Dunblane, will be his
major scheduled event of April,
Heather Watson had a good run at Indian
Wells, reaching the quarter-finals before
Carla Suarez-Navarro of Spain, beat her
7-6 (7-5) 3-6, 6-1. Earlier shes beaten Julia
Goerges of Germany, Camila Giorgi of Italy
and the biggest coup of her career, when she
triumphed over Agnieszka Radwanska of
Poland, the recent number three in the world.
Serena Williams return to Indian Wells for
the first time since 2001, but was forced to
pull out of her semi-final match with an injury.
LATE SPORT
The World Cricket Cup completed its
quarter-final matches. South Africa beat Sri
Lanka by nine wickets, India overwhelmed
Bangladesh by 109 runs and Australia came
through against Pakistan by six wickets. New
Zealand sealed the last semi-final place with
a 143 run victory over the West Indies. The
semi-finals pit New Zealand and South Africa
together, while Australia and India face off
in the other game. The final was March 31.
The Johnstone Paint Football League
Trophy final, played at Wembley in front of a
72,000 crowd, March 22, saw Bristol City
claim the silverware with a 2-0 win over
Walsall. The trophy is a special competition for clubs in the football leagues lower
two divisions. It was Walsalls first visit to
Wembley in their 137 year old history. Aden
Flint put the City ahead in the 15th minute
and Mark Little got a second, six minutes
after the break.

Sporting Passings

The Edinburgh born midfielder Dave

Mackay, captained Hearts to a Scottish
Championship in 1958, before moving to
Tottenham Hotspur for 32,000, skippering the London side to the League and Cup
double in the 1961-2 season and capturing
two other FA Cup winners medal with Spurs.
He was signed by Brian Clough for Derby
County in 1968, and they won promotion
to Division One the very same year. Mackay
was acknowledged as the most talented
and authoritive midfield general of his time.
with a mild manner demeanor and calming
influence on his colleagues. He would later
take over as manager at Derby County, and
go on to coach at Walsall, Birmingham
City, Doncaster Rovers and then a number
of overseas clubs. He made 22 appearances
for Scotland. Dave Mackay was 80.

By Ridge Mahoney
Arsenal: First-half goals four
minutes apart by Olivier Giroud
were just enough for Arsenal to
win, 2-1, at Newcastle. His take
is 17 goals, an impressive figure given his
three-month recovery from an ankle injury.
Keeper David Ospina looks like he may keep
the starting spot for a while after the Gunners
won their sixth straight game. Girouds blast
from distance just before halftime broke
a goalless deadlock and goals by Aaron
Ramsey and Mathieu Flamini finished off a
3-0 dispatch of West Ham.
Aston Villa: Four saves by Brad
Guzan werent enough; Villa conceded in the 87th minute of a 1-0
home loss to Swansea City. Christian Benteke and Gabriel Agbonlahor each
scored twice as Villa, incredibly, doubled
its away goal total of four by smashing
Sunderland, 4-0. Bentekes first goal ended
an away drought of 614 minutes. Bentekes
last-minute penalty earned manager Tim
Sherwood his first win with the club, a 2-1
defeat of West Brom.
Burnley: George Boyds goal
just past the hour mark propelled
Burnley to a 1-0 victory over defending champions Manchester
City. Kieran Trippiers free kick yielded a
half-clearance that Boyd met with his left
foot and drove low inside the far post. It was
Burnleys only win in the last nine games and
only goal netted in the past four coupled with
2-0 defeats to Liverpool and Southampton.
Jason Shackells own goal clinched the
latter defeat.
Chelsea: Loic Remy scored
with his first touch off the bench to
edge Chelsea past Hull City, 3-2, in
a labored performance that started
sharply when Eden Hazard struck in the
second minute. Diego Costas goal opened
up a 2-0 lead in the ninth minute yet 17
minutes later the game was tied on a pair of
defensive gaffes. Remys fourth goal for the
club saved it considerable embarrassment
and rewarded a remarkable triple-save from
keeper Thibaut Courtois. Costas first goal in
nearly two months provided a lead that didnt
stand up in a 1-1 draw with Southampton,
which scored on a penalty kick awarded for
a phantom foul on Nemanja Matic.
Crystal Palace: Goals from
Glenn Murray and Wilfried Zaha
late in the first half carried Palace
past Stoke City, 2-1, for their third
victory in the last four games.
Murray equalized in the 41st minute with a
penalty kick and in first-half stoppage time
Zaha latched onto a Murray flick to score his
second goals in as many games. Against
Queens Park Rangers Zahas goal opened
the scoring and James MacArthur and Joel
Ward scored two minutes apart for a 3-1 win.
Everton: Consecutive victories over QPR and Newcastle
United ease some of the pressure
building after a five-match winless streak. Aaron Lennons first goal for the
club turned out to be the winner against QPR.
Seamus Colemans shot from a Leon Osman
feed provided a 1-0 lead and after conceding a tying goal Everton pushed forward for
Lennon to nail home a loose ball in the 77th
minute. Against Newcastle, James McCarthys weak shot from 20 yards somehow

British Football
Teams Could Be Back
At Olympics In Rio
BRITISH FOOTBALL teams could be
back at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro
next year.
A team was fielded at the Olympics
in London in 2012 for the first time
since 1960, but it was planned to be
a one-off.
Scotland, Wales and Northern
Ireland fear losing their independence
within FIFA.
However, the English Football Association, which runs the Olympic teams,
has written to its Scottish, Northern
Irish and Welsh counterparts asking
if they want to participate.
The British Olympic Association
says it has received confirmation
from the FA of their intention to enter into the qualification process for
Rio 2016 for both men and womens
tournaments.
The top four teams in the mens under-21s European champion qualify,
as do the top three European teams in
the womens World Cup.

eluded the goalkeeper and Romelu Lukaku

converted a penalty kick awarded for a foul
on Lennon. Ross Barkley got the third goal
in stoppage time.
Hull City: The Tigers fired
back after conceding two early
goals to Chelsea; Ahmed Elmohamady pulled a goal back and
74 seconds later Abel Hernandez pounced
on a bad backpass to tie the game. Dame
NDoyes goal in the 15th minute wasnt
enough to beat Sunderland, which equalized in the 77th minute and departed with
a 1-1 draw.
Leicester City: The Foxes
scored too many goals for their
own good in a 4-3 loss at Tottenham. Jamie Vardy and Wes
Morgan scored on either side of half-time
to tie the game, 2-2, but a Jeffrey Schlupp
own goal proved to be the difference. David
Nugent jangled the nerves by narrowing the
gap to a single goal in the 90th minute. They
were unable to exploit a man advantage for
the last 20 minutes of a 0-0 tie with Hull City.
Liverpool: The Champions
League quest took a major hit in
a disappointing 2-1 Anfield loss
to Manchester United. Midfielder
Steven Gerrard was sent off 38
seconds into his second-half appearance for
stamping on an opponents leg and not until
the 69th minute did Liverpool manage a shot
on target. Daniel Sturridges effort wound
up in the net but still Liverpool lost for the
first time in league play since December.
Jordan Hendersons goal midway through
the second half downed Swansea, 1-0, and
his goal also opened the scoring in a 2-1
defeat of Manchester City decided by Phillipe
Coutinhos belter in the 75th minute.
Manchester City: Wilfried
Bony bagged his first goal for
City and Fernando and David
Silva also scored in a 3-0 defeat
of West Brom, who were reduced by 10 men
in the second minute on a red card issued
to the wrong player. David Silva seized the
rebound of his own blocked shot and scored
in the second minute of first-half stoppage
time to open up a 1-0 lead on Leicester City.
James Milners goal in the late stages sealed
a victory.
Manchester United: Juan
Matas second goal of the
game, an acrobatic volley of an
Angel di Maria cross, ensured
a 2-1 triumph at Anfield. Ander Herreras
excellent pass had set up Mata to score the
first goal of a victory that opened up a fivepoint gap over fifth-place Liverpool and was
also Uniteds fourth straight win. Maroune
Felliani, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney
scored before halftime in a 3-0 thumping of
Tottenham.
Newcastle United: Moussa
Sissokos goal early in the
second half cut a 2-0 deficit in
half but the Magpies could get
no closer in a 2-1 home loss to Arsenal that
was their fourth loss in the last five games.
An error by Tim Krul and a foul by Yoan Gouffran provided Everton with a pair of goals and
captain Fabricio Coloccini was sent off in a
3-0 away loss.
Queens Park Rangers: A string
of five defeats in which they
scored one goal left QPR in the
relegation zone. An equalizer by

Eduardo Vargas didnt stand up in a 2-1 home

defeat against Everton. Matthew Phillips goal
in the 83rd minute was the only consolation
of a 3-1 loss at Crystal Palace. Sandro and
Charlie Austin, respectively, were the scorers
in 2-1 home losses to Tottenham and Arsenal.
Southampton: A run of seven
points in three games revived
hopes of a Europa League place.
Shane Longs goal set the Saints
on their way to a 2-0 defeat of Burnley; an
own goal added the second. They held on
for a 1-1 draw at Chelsea after Dasan Tadic
equalized from the penalty spot in the 19th
minute. Sadio Mane capitalized on a goalkeeping gaffe in the 83rd minute to score the
only goal of a 1-0 dispatch of Crystal Palace.
Stoke City: Back-to-back losses
halted the momentum of a threegame winning streak. Mame Biram
Dioufs eighth league goal of the
season gave the Potters a 1-0 lead after
14 minutes against Crystal Palace, but they
conceded two goals late in the first half and
were beaten, 2-1. U.S. international Geoff
Cameron entered the match at halftime but
was unable to prevent a 1-0 loss at West
Brom. Victor Moses and Mama Diouf scored
in an impressive 2-0 defeat of Everton.
Sunderland: Jack Rodwells
goal in the 77th minute earned
the Black Cats their only point
of the month, garnered in a 1-1
draw at Hull City. They were blanked in backto-back defeats inflicted by Aston Villa (4-0)
and West Ham United (1-0). The latter game
marked the debut of manager Dick Advocaat,
who after losing to the Hammers has just one
point of cushion above the relegation zone.
Swansea City: Bafetimbi
Gomis connected on a Jefferson
Montero centering pass and
smashed home the only goal of a
1-0 victory at Aston Villa. His sixth goal of the
season came with just three minutes left and
followed back-to-back defeats that included a
3-2 loss at Tottenham marred by Gomis fainting on the field. He recovered in the dressing
room. Ki Sung-Yeung equalized in the first half
but a late goal by Gylfi Sigurdsson changed
only the margin of defeat.
Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs won
three of four matches in March
scoring nine goals in the process
but the defeat, a 3-0 crusher at
Manchester United, flattened their
European aspirations. Harry Kane tallied twice
in the opening 13 minutes and tacked on a
second-half penalty kick to log his first hat
trick in a wild 4-3 defeat of Leicester City.
Kane scored both goals in a 2-1 defeat of
QPR. Nadir Chadli opened the scoring against
Swansea City and Ryan Mason notched his
first Premier League goal before Andros
Townsend claimed the winner in another
high-powered win (3-2).
West Bromwich Albion: In a
3-0 loss to Manchester City, referee Neil Swarbrick reduced West
Brom to 10 men in the second
minute by sending off Gareth McAuley for a
foul committed by teammate Craig Dawson.
Craig Gardner swung over a cross in the 20th
minute that Brown Ideye headed home for a
1-0 defeat of Stoke City.
West Ham United: Diafra
Sakhos late winner earned the
Hammers a 1-0 victory over
Sunderland and ended a scoreless streak of 282 minutes that included
losses to London clubs Crystal Palace (3-1),
Chelsea (1-0), and Arsenal (3-0). West Ham
has taken only seven points out of a possible
27 from its London rivals this season yet is
solidly entrenched in the middle of the table.
