When Osborne took control of Britains
economic levers in 2010, he insisted that
sorting out public finances was the primary
objective. Following the global financial
crisis of 2007-8, the UK economy sank
into its deepest recession since World War
II and a number of the countrys largest
financial institutions, such as Lloyds Bank

chance to be seen by the right eyes!
It may even bring a dozen or so people
back on Tuesday, intrigued... who is this girl
with the long brown hair and the boy with the
star tattoos and the dog and will they meet
for a drink?
The sign caused a sensation among locals
in the town and a search was launched to
find the mystery man . . . William was a
local caf worker.
Television crews were on hand to film the
couples first meeting when William returned
to the beach and asked Sarah to go for a
drink with him.
Sarah, who is spending three months
travelling round New Zealand, refused to give
her full name to television interviewers. She
said: I hate cameras and being the centre of
attention. People dont act on things often so
it was just me acting on something.
William, who works at a burger bar, said
that he first heard of the poster when his
housemate came home at 3am and woke
him up.
He knew it was me because Im the only
guy in Picton who has star tattoos, JohnnyBravo hair and a labradoodle, he said.
Im not sure if the poor girl knows what
shes gotten herself into. Its just gotten
so big.
Spocking Bank
Notes Has Become
A No-No In Canada
LEONARD NIMOYS death last month
sparked off a Spocking craze in
Canada which has seen the government
ask people to stop drawing Mr Spocks
features on $5 bank notes.
Not a new habit, as fans of the
famous Star Trek character have been
scribbling on the face of former PM Wilfrid Laurier Canadas first Francophone
prime minister on the notes for years.
But after Nimoy passed away last month the numbers of altered notes multiplied
noticeably.
Canadas central bank explained that it was not illegal to add Spocks pointy Vulcan
ears, sharp eyebrows and signature bowl haircut to the notes. However, it did encourage
citizens to stop their scribbling.
Bank spokeswoman Josianne Menard explained the request in an email: There are
important reasons why it should not be done.
The bank believed it was inappropriate to deface the banknote because it was a
Canadian symbol and source of national pride.
The acceleration of the trend followed the actors death with social media users posting
their own versions of Lauriers Vulcan makeover in honour of their hero.
Spock your $5 bills for Leonard Nimoy, the Canadian Design Resource tweeted
on its posting while Simon Williams tweeted: Ive had a beat up Canadian five buried
in my wallet for years, finally found a use for it!
Images of the altered bills were circulated widely online and attracted international
media attention.
Calgary artist Tom Bagley, who posted his own Spock-Laurier hybrid on Facebook
and Flickr after Nimoys death, said the original idea came about as an old bar trick to
impress a waitress and he did not see anything wrong with it. I always thought it was
OK as long as the numbers were intact it still counted as money, he said.

was the direct cause of the deaths of 96
Liverpool fans at the FA Cup semifinal
between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
Under questioning from barrister Paul
Greaney, Duckenfield accepted that the
crush would not have taken place if fans
had been prevented from going down a
tunnel, admitting he froze before eventually ordering the exit gate be opened..
Greaney put it to Duckenfield that the
failure to close the tunnel was the direct
cause of the deaths of 96 persons. Duckenfield replied: Yes sir.
New inquests are currently being held
after the original verdicts of accidental
death were overturned, and former chief
superintendent David Duckenfield gave
evidence last month.
In meetings immediately after the April
1989 crush, Duckenfield admitted to saying that fans had got in through gates
which he now says was a terrible lie in
that everybody knew the truth.
MEETING
I did not say, I have authorised opening of the gates, Duckenfield recalled
of the meeting with then-Football Association chief executive Graham Kelly
and club officials in the police control box.
I made a dreadful mistake not realizing
the consequences of what I was doing,
Duckenfield said.
Family members of some of the victims
have been attending the inquest hearings
since they started almost a year ago in
Warrington, near Liverpool in northwest
England.
Duckenfield issued a very, very sincere apology to families who have spent
almost 26 years campaigning for the truth
to be uncovered about the disaster.
What I would like to say to the Liverpool families is this: I regret that omission
and I shall regret it to my dying day, the
retired police officer said. I said something rather hurriedly, without considering the position, without thinking of the
consequence and the trauma, heartache
and distress that the inference would have
caused to those people who were already in
a deep state of stock, who were distressed.
PEOPLE WHO act as apologists for terrorists are partly to blame for their actions,
Britains foreign minister said last month,
rejecting claims that slip-ups by the intelligence services helped turn young Britons
into jihadi militants.
Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond was
countering allegations by Muslim advocacy
organization CAGE, which says heavyhanded attention from British spies helped
radicalize Londoner Mohammed Emwazi,
who has been identified as the Islamic State
militant known as Jihadi John.
Hammond said the responsibility for
acts of terror rests with those who commit
them. But a huge burden of responsibility
also lies with those who act as apologists
for them.
Hammond strongly defended Britains

Its a recovery for the
few from a government
of the few,
rner Shoppe
&
Government finances took a big dent and Osbornes solution, adopted by the junior partner in
the governing coalition, the Liberal Democrats, was
deep spending cuts and tax increases.
For the main opposition Labour Party, Osbornes
strategy hobbled the UK economy for years and actually made the budget situation worse. It argues that
too much of the burden of fixing the public finances
was placed on the least well-off in society and that
it worsened living standards for many.
Its a recovery for the few from a government of
the few, said Ed Miliband, Labours leader. For
the first time since the 1920s, people are earning
less at the end of a government than they were at
the beginning.
BATTLEGROUND
The UK economy will likely be the main battleground in the election campaign and Osborne sought
to nullify Labours charge that the recovery is not
felt by most people.
Citing independent forecasts prepared for the budget, Osborne said the UK economy is set to expand
faster than anticipated this year despite downgrades
to global growth. He said the Office for Budget
Responsibility thinks the UK will grow 2.5 percent
this year, up slightly from its last prediction of 2.4
percent. Growth is forecast to stay above 2 percent
in subsequent years.
He also insisted public finances are on the mend
and that the budget will be in surplus by 2018-19.
Opinion polls say the general election is too close
to call, with the Conservatives neck-and-neck with
Labour. No party is anticipated to achieve a majority in the election, which means deals with smaller
parties will have to be sealed for a government to
be formed.
Besides the Liberal Democrats, smaller parties
including the UK Independence Party and the Scottish National Party are set to gain representation.

Police Watchdog To
Probe Sex Offense
Cover-Up Claims
BRITAINS independent police watchdog
says it is looking into allegations that Scotland Yard covered up historic allegations
of child abuse from the 1970s to the 2000s.
The Independent Police Complaints
Commission said last month it is investigating 14 referrals, including claims
that the force suppressed evidence and
hindered or halted investigations because
police officers were involved.
Sarah Green, deputy chair of the commission, described the allegations as being
of the most serious nature. Scotland
Yard is also investigating the allegations.
Among the allegations are claims that
a Houses of Parliament document found
at a child sex offenders address linked
lawmakers and police officers to a pedophile ring.
The police said in a statement that
recent convictions show that the service
is committed to investigating non-recent
allegations of sexual abuse.
UK Proposals Make
Officials Accountable In
Sex Abuse Cases
PRIME MINISTER David Cameron says he is considering measures to make public officials and city
councilmembers accountable if they fail to protect
children from sexual exploitation.
The measures were outlined last month at a meeting called by Cameron that brought police, healthcare
experts and ministers together with victims.
The session was called in response to an investigation
that found some 1,400 children were sexually exploited
in a northern England town. The report cited collective failures by authorities in Rotherham between
1997 and 2013.
Cameron says he will study whether to propose extending the crime of willful neglect of patients to cover
childrens social care and education.
Any legislation would come after the national election in May, which could bring in a new prime minister.

Treatment Of Prisoners In
Private Detention Centre
Said To Be Shocking
A PRIVATELY-owned detention centre
in England has been accused of being run
with a shocking loss of humanity after
a terminally ill Canadian man was kept in
handcuffs as he died in hospital.
The chief inspector of prisons Nick
Hardwick, said that on at least two occasions staff at the Geo-run Harmondsworth
immigration removal centre have needlessly handcuffed elderly, vulnerable and
incapacitated detainees in what he called
an excessive and shocking manner.
He said that the two men were so ill that
one died shortly after his handcuffs were
removed and the other, the 84-year-old,
who has been named as Alois Dvorzac,
died while still restrained.
Staff ignored a doctors report declaring the 84-year-old unfit for detention or
deportation and in need of social care.
EXCESSIVE
Hardwick said the security procedures
at the immigration removal centre, which
can hold more than 600 male detainees,
lacked proportionality: Segregation was

PRINCE CHARLES and his wife finished up their visit to Washington, DC with
a whirlwind day that included meeting with President Barack Obama last month.
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall began March 19 with a visit
to the US Armed Forces Retirement Home, where residents lined the corridors
waiting for the royal couple. They stopped and chatted with residents one by one.
Later in the day, Prince Charles is visited a charter school for adult immigrants,
while his wife Camilla toured a forensic sciences center.
The couple then met with Obama and Vice President Joe Biden at the White

The couple arrived in the US March 17, and the trip marked Prince Charles

STRIKER Harry Kane was called up by England for the first time last month after a rapid
rise from the fringes of Tottenhams squad
to becoming a key component of the team.
The 21-year-old Kane has scored 26
goals in 42 games so far in his breakthrough
season at Tottenham, and was voted Premier
League player of the month in January and
February.
Huge honor to be called up to the England
squad, Kane, who has played for Englands

take turns hosting the British Masters
when the event returns to the European Tour schedule this year.
Ian Poulter, Luke Donald, Justin
Rose and Lee Westwood will rotate as

this years British Masters to Woburn

This was an amazing final day with fabulous rugby and astonishing scoring. The three
games produced 221 points and 25 tries.
First, Wales took Italy apart in Rome in
a brilliant second-half display in which they
ran up 47 points but crucially conceded a
converted try in the final minute. This was the
score that was key to the whole days action.
Ireland then made mincemeat of a feeble
Scottish team who seemed to be helping the
Irish to a huge score, possibly to set England

Scotlands slow decline as a major rugby
nation continued when they conceded a
last-minute penalty try. This brought up the
number of Italys Six Nations wins to 12 in
15 years. Over the samer period Scotland
have won six more matches. Over the past
15 years, Italy have ended with 10 wooden
spoons to Scotlands three.
Once more the home side could rue
chances that went begging but truth to tell
they never had the beating of the Italy pack
whose powerful scrummaging forced the
match-winning penalty right on the final
whistle. If you werent an Italian, it was a
game to forget.
Wales took on France looking to extend
their winning sequence to four matches. They
enjoyed far more possession with the Welsh
midfield constantly poking holes in the French
defence. They owed much to the kicking of
Leigh Halfpenny with five penalties. Highlight
of the Welsh game was a magnificent try for
Alistair Biggar.
Apart from that it was frankly quite a boring
match with Wales over-reliant on powerful
penetrating running and the French never
quite timing their fluent movement.
England went to Dublin with high hopes

Arsenal: First-half goals four
minutes apart by Olivier Giroud
were just enough for Arsenal to
win, 2-1, at Newcastle. His take
is 17 goals, an impressive figure given his
three-month recovery from an ankle injury.
Keeper David Ospina looks like he may keep
the starting spot for a while after the Gunners
won their sixth straight game. Girouds blast
from distance just before halftime broke
a goalless deadlock and goals by Aaron
Ramsey and Mathieu Flamini finished off a
3-0 dispatch of West Ham.
Aston Villa: Four saves by Brad
Guzan werent enough; Villa conceded in the 87th minute of a 1-0
home loss to Swansea City. Christian Benteke and Gabriel Agbonlahor each
scored twice as Villa, incredibly, doubled
its away goal total of four by smashing
Sunderland, 4-0. Bentekes first goal ended
an away drought of 614 minutes. Bentekes
last-minute penalty earned manager Tim
Sherwood his first win with the club, a 2-1
defeat of West Brom.
Burnley: George Boyds goal
just past the hour mark propelled
Burnley to a 1-0 victory over defending champions Manchester
City. Kieran Trippiers free kick yielded a
half-clearance that Boyd met with his left
foot and drove low inside the far post. It was
Burnleys only win in the last nine games and
only goal netted in the past four coupled with
2-0 defeats to Liverpool and Southampton.
Jason Shackells own goal clinched the
latter defeat.
Chelsea: Loic Remy scored
with his first touch off the bench to
edge Chelsea past Hull City, 3-2, in
a labored performance that started
sharply when Eden Hazard struck in the
second minute. Diego Costas goal opened
up a 2-0 lead in the ninth minute yet 17
minutes later the game was tied on a pair of
defensive gaffes. Remys fourth goal for the
club saved it considerable embarrassment
and rewarded a remarkable triple-save from
keeper Thibaut Courtois. Costas first goal in
nearly two months provided a lead that didnt
stand up in a 1-1 draw with Southampton,
which scored on a penalty kick awarded for
a phantom foul on Nemanja Matic.
Crystal Palace: Goals from
Glenn Murray and Wilfried Zaha
late in the first half carried Palace
past Stoke City, 2-1, for their third
victory in the last four games.
Murray equalized in the 41st minute with a
penalty kick and in first-half stoppage time
Zaha latched onto a Murray flick to score his
second goals in as many games. Against
Queens Park Rangers Zahas goal opened
the scoring and James MacArthur and Joel
Ward scored two minutes apart for a 3-1 win.
Everton: Consecutive victories over QPR and Newcastle
United ease some of the pressure
building after a five-match winless streak. Aaron Lennons first goal for the
club turned out to be the winner against QPR.
Seamus Colemans shot from a Leon Osman
feed provided a 1-0 lead and after conceding a tying goal Everton pushed forward for
Lennon to nail home a loose ball in the 77th
minute. Against Newcastle, James McCarthys weak shot from 20 yards somehow
British Football
Teams Could Be Back
At Olympics In Rio
BRITISH FOOTBALL teams could be
back at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro
next year.
A team was fielded at the Olympics
in London in 2012 for the first time
since 1960, but it was planned to be
a one-off.
Scotland, Wales and Northern
Ireland fear losing their independence
within FIFA.
However, the English Football Association, which runs the Olympic teams,
has written to its Scottish, Northern
Irish and Welsh counterparts asking
if they want to participate.
The British Olympic Association
says it has received confirmation
from the FA of their intention to enter into the qualification process for
Rio 2016 for both men and womens
tournaments.
The top four teams in the mens under-21s European champion qualify,
as do the top three European teams in
the womens World Cup.
