as Rajya Sabha. In 1999, Abhishek Manu

The character of this leader was challenged very

recently by the end of the last year when he was
accused by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for
tax evasion. BJP also accused other Congress
leaders for generating black money in the
country.
Following
this
case,
Sonia
Gandhi, president of the Indian National
Congress party, had been asked to clarify this
issue.
Income
Tax
Settlement
Commission imposed Abhishek Manu Singhvi wit
h a penalty of about Rs.57 crore for the period
of financial years 2010-2011 and 20122013. Following this levy, Singhvi filed a plea
for
exemption
from
prosecution
of
the
charges, but his petition was also rejected.

According to local news, Income Tax Settlement

Commission department monitored huge expenses
under Abhishek Manu Singhvis head during the
financial year 2010-2011. When he was asked for
the records, he failed to produce any vouchers
for the aforementioned period of time. He claimed
to have lost all of the records as termites attacked
the office of his subordinate where the record had
been placed. Likewise, in the financial year, 20122013, Singhvi spent money more than Rs
75 crore on books, stationery, printing and other
things. This time, however, he produced most of
thevouchers,
but
the
records
related
to
trifling amount could not be confirmed by the
taxdepartment.

In
Feb
2012,
Sambit
Patra,
BJP
spokesperson
reported
that Abhishek Manu Singhvispent Rs 5 crore on
the purchase of laptops which he gave to his
legal assistants.Singhvi is assisted in his work by
fourteen advocates and professionals. According
toPatra, Abhishek Singhvi had to purchase 1250
laptops, each of Rs 40, 000 to account for the
amount
he
had
claimed
to
have
spent. Further, he said that Singhvi spent about
Rs 36 crore on the purchase of solar panels
for the company he owned, whereas the seller of
the solar panels agreed in front of IT
authorities that Rs 10 crore had been repaid
to the sons of AbhishekSinghvi as a loan.

Keeping in mind the above facts and

statements, it becomes controversial whether
the
claims
of Abhishek Manu Singhviare correct or not.H
owever, most of the commissions statements
contradict the claims of Singhvi. Additionally,
the
presence
of
certain
loopholes
in Singhvi's claims may serve as the proof
that Abhishek Manu Singhvi has set out these
claims to exempt from the taxes.
