A MAINTENANCE REPORT ON PELFACO ESCAVATOR (D6H CATERPILLAR LGP)

AND PAYLOADER 966C

This is a report with regards to maintenance assessment carried out on the above
stated equipments on 24th July 2013 at Pelfaco jetty yard after critical assessment by a
maintenance expert. Captured in this report are observed challenges experienced and
requirements listed for the stated equipments to be brought to full functionality. This
report will be sectioned in two parts to fully capture the extent of work done and
materials requested by the technicians on site.
CATERPILLAR D6H LGP (EXCAVATOR)
On arrival at site, work had commenced on analysis of the gear box of the
excavator. The following parts were taken off in actual order:

Gear selector valve

Hydraulic pump
Transmission pump ( gear)
Transmission valve
Gear housing taken apart

Difficulty was experienced while removing gear housing due to absence of heavy duty
lift.
There were pieces of debris gotten from the clutch plate found in the oil
which indicated that an off spec lubricating oil was used in machinery operation earlier.
The result was damage to the clutch plates within the gear housing (8 clutch plates).
The plates within the wheel are also assumed to be damaged but cannot be assessed
until certain operations are made possible.
Current assessment levels have confirmed the following machine parts need
attention;
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Seals on gear valve need replacement (preferably whole kit)

Transmission pump (gear) requires a seal kit.
8 clutch plates for gear housing
Seals on clutch disc need replacement
Bottles of oxygen and acetyene for welding (to access damage behind legs of
machinery).
6. Heavy duty socket (to take off track plates of excavator).
7. Petrol (to wash parts).
8. Diesel to run engine.
9. Engine oil ISO VG 68 spec for gear box.
10.8 caterpillar Bolts and Nuts for track plates
The technician mentioned that the excavator engine was most probably in good shape
since it was fixed last year due to an overheating problem and has not been in use
since then.

CATERPILLAR 966C (PAYLOADER)

Owing to the work done on the excavator and unavailability of required tools,
assessment on the pay loader was strictly superficial. Technician mentioned that there
was no battery available for the test run of the machine and also that there was no
diesel available.
Maintenance requests for pay loader at this time are:
1. Diesel for engine
2. Working battery
3. Vulcanising of tyres
Health of other machinery parts of cannot be ascertained until further examination is
carried out after current requirements are carried out.
