The Faison School

History

Brittany Faison was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at 18

months old. At the time there was no program in the Richmond, Virginia
area for children with autism. Shortly after her diagnosis, Brittanys parents,
Lynne and Don Faison, began researching the most effective teaching
techniques available for their daughter and found an instructional program
utilizing applied behavior analysis (ABA). Her grandparents, Alan Kirshner and
Flo Guzman, saw the progress Brittany was experiencing and wanted other
families to benefit from this instructional methodology. In response, Alan
and Flo founded The Faison School for Autism in 1998 as an early childhood
program. Over time, the school was contacted by parents and individuals in
the community and asked to provide school-aged services as well. With the goal of helping other
families by bringing state-of-the-art practices to the central Virginia area, The Faison School
began to grow to meet the increasing needs of the ASD community.

The Faison Approach

Only the most effective autism therapies are used, taught and shared at The Faison School. The
school uses the principles of ABA, which are recognized as the best methods for long-term success
in the treatment of autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities. Students are
instructed, both individually and in groups, in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and
writing. All components of a students curriculum are individualized and personalized, based on
the students specific needs, and implemented using evidence-based procedures and scientific
teaching practices. Simply put, The Faison School utilizes only proven methods and techniques
that are shown to make a difference.

Faison Today

Today, The Faison School is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, licensed as a day school by the
Virginia Department of Education. We provide programs for over 180 individuals diagnosed with
ASD and other developmental disabilities, ranging from age 16 months into adulthood. In addition
to the Day School, our programs include Early Learners, The Life Skills and Employment Center,

The Faison School

Adult Day services, After School, Summer Programs, and The Center for Behavioral Services.
The newly completed Faison Residence provides semi-independent living opportunities for adults
with developmental disabilities. Always responsive to the latest research and needs of the ASD
population, Faison continues to develop new programs with an eye toward replication across the
country. With one in 68 children now diagnosed with ASD, the need for Faisons services is ever
growing.

The Faison Residence

Funding

The services Faison provides to families are funded by school districts, Medicaid, SSI, private
insurance and private payers. However, these funds cover only a portion of the true cost of
providing the empirically proven strategies used at Faison. It is only through philanthropic gifts
that Faison can make exceptional progress possible every day and fulfill our vision for the future.
Your generosity makes all the difference and we are deeply grateful for your support.
