LOGOS

PROGRAMS/TOOLS
Adobe Illustrator

OBJECTIVES
Create three high quality logos for
a personal brand, utilizing different
styles, typography, and color schemes.

PROCESS
The face logo was developed from a number of sketches I made. I used
Illustrator to create a digital version then started with a tetrad color scheme that
included teal, brick, gold and indigo. After working on the typography, I revised
my color scheme until I was happy with it.
The second logo is a product of how the b and c look together in the Changeling
Neo typeface. Most of the design relates to alignment and spacing on the brand
name - many small adjustments.
For the last logo, I started by scribbling a BC signature until I got something I
liked, found a font that contrasted a lot and picked a simple color scheme.

OBJECTIVES
Create a professional quality business
cards well-suited for a given company
and branding.

PROCESS
I started by working on the logo. This involved a lot of sketches. I tried many
different styles and concepts before deciding to use a lion head and before
deciding on this style version of the lion head. After settling on the shape,
I created the logo in Illustrator. I also worked with many different color
combinations. I tried some three and four color versions but ultimately used
two to allow the shapes to do most of the work.
The business card layout was created in InDesign and involved starting with
standard sized frames. I wanted to keep the diagonal balance similar to the
corner pips on a playing card. However, the small size made some elements
work better centered (specifically, the rules and business name).

MONTAGE

PROGRAMS/TOOLS
Adobe Photoshop

OBJECTIVES
Create an inspirational montage that
utilized good typography, blended
images, and an effective color scheme.
Specifically, the focus was on using
subtle blending techniques rather
than cropping or marquee selections.

PROCESS
I started with the coal image and used a black-to-white gradient to serve as a
depth mask for the Lens Blur filter. I also used Color Fill layers with gradient layer
masks to darken the image in an upper left-to-lower right fashion. I placed the
diamond image and adjusted scaling and placement. I used a layer mask and
a variety of overlapping gradients to fade the image into the coal background.
I controlled colors using a variety of adjustment layers and used the Sharpen
tool to enhance the diamonds. Finally, I added a concrete texture overlay to
given some additional detail and unification to the image before moving onto
the typography. I used some drop shadow and a black Color Fill layer to set the
some of the text apart from the image.

LETTERHEAD

PROGRAMS/TOOLS
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

OBJECTIVES
Create a professional quality letterhead
well-suited for a given company and
branding.

PROCESS
After a lot of sketching, I decided to use the idea of a stylized lion head. I used
Illustrator to create a digital version.
Once the logo was in place, I started working on layout in InDesign. I placed the
logo as a set of linked Illustrator files (one for the color version, and one for the
watermark). Using the linked files meant I could go back and revise the logo in
Illustrator, and InDesign would automatically pick up the changes.
I used black, white, and horizontal rules to try and add a classy feeling.

BROCHURE

PROGRAMS/TOOLS
Manga Studio
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

OBJECTIVES
Create a two-sided/folding document.
Use InDesigns word-wrap functions.
Use InDesigns Paragraph Styles

PROCESS
I used Manga Studio to create the digital versions of the playing card symbols.
I used Illustrator to create vector versions and InDesign to create a four panel
layout (two 10 x 3.5 pages). I used guides to ensure everything ended up where
it should be. I then created a logo in Illustrator and set about picked a color
scheme.
I played with different ways to showcase and/or hide the different symbols before
working on the copy layout much. Once the outside faces of the brochure was
done, I started working on the inside. I finished by tweaking copy, paragraph
styles, and word-wrap settings.

PHOTODESIGN

PROGRAMS/TOOLS
Adobe Photoshop

OBJECTIVES
Demonstrate good photography and
image editing skills and incorporate
color into a poster layout with an
original photo taken by me.

PROCESS
I sketched some basic layouts and then set up to take some pictures. I used a
UV filter and a polarizing filter and opened the lens up to f/1.7 because I wanted
to keep the key in focus, but not much else. To light it, I used a little light from
a window, a Duracell LED headlamp with all four white LEDs on, and my iPod
Touch for a little bit more light. The LEDs arent a great light, but they gave the
key some bright highlights and a higher contrast shadow.
I then tweaked some basic settings in Photoshop and selected a color scheme
and some contrasting fonts to work with. I used a variety of weights and colors
to create interest and contrast within the text. I spent a fair amount of time
tweaking alignments and spacing to create the implied column for the text.

PROGRAMS/TOOLS
Canon Scanner
Microsoft Word

OBJECTIVES
Find a high quality print image to scan
Create a full-bleed design
Use tools within Word to create a
professional design

PROCESS
I started some rough sketches to come up with layout ideas. I played with
making the image very prominent and also making it very small within the
design. Its a good picture, and making it larger worked better. So, I created some
more detailed sketches to get an idea where I wanted the different elements to
go. Once I had a decent idea of what I wanted, I moved into Word and started
placing elements.
Inside word, I positioned the elements and then starting experimenting with
fonts. I found some fonts that I thought fit the exquisite feel I was going for
perfectly, so I used those. There were many, many adjustments to font size,
tracking, and even Words limited kerning settings.

OBJECTIVES
Work with HTML and CSS
Create body copy
Describe the process for creating a
logo that appeals to a target audience
Identify hex colors for web use
Compress files into a ZIP archive

PROCESS
The process was fairly simple I took some base CSS and HTML files, added
the existing logo, then started adjusting colors and fonts, and making layout
changes. I tried a variety of combinations for the colors before settling on
this one. Changes to padding, letter spacing, font size, margins, etc. were
mostly tweaked through trial and error. I tried to focus mostly on contrast and
alignment, while looking for a web design that meshed with the logo.

PROGRAMS/TOOLS
Adobe InDesign

OBJECTIVES
Apply design principles to create a
basic flier layout, and incorporate
appropriate
typography
in
the
creation of a promotional flier.

PROCESS
I made very basic thumbnails of shape ideas. After getting some general ideas, I
made more detailed sketches. I started incorporating the different pieces to see
how they worked together.
The flier went through many revisions, including changes based off of the
critiques I was involved in. I tried adding some elements that were only there
to provide repetition, but ended up removing them to keep things simple (and
they didnt have much of any other purpose, so I ditched them).
I ended up completely redoing this project at the end of the semester to try and
better utilize the new skills I had developed (though, its still not my strongest.)
