Brochure
Description: A two-sided (duplex), offset folding brochure designed for an
interior design company.
Date: March 29, 2015
Course: COMM 130
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Programs: Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate at least four quality images in addition to your logo.
Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs,
headers, and sub-headers.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.
Process: For this assignment I used predominantly Adobe InDesign to create
my brochure. I began by first using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to create
a clipping mask for the cover photo into the curved rectangle shape. Next,
I copied this photo and clipping mask into InDesign and positioned it into
place for the offset brochure layout. Next I created my Perry Designs logo
using Illustrator and sourced the colors for the brochure from this logo. I then
began to layout the photos and text in the brochure and use the
colors throughout the design. Finally, I used paragraph styling
in InDesign to space out the text in my design.

Event Ad.
Description: This is color full-bleed mock event advertisement I created using
Microsoft Word and an image I scanned in from a book.
Date: February 1, 2015
Course: COMM 130
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Programs and Tools: Microsoft Word and Canon MX410 Scanner
Objectives:
Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and
audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe
programs, including Photoshop.
Process: The first step in this process was finding an appropriate photo. I found
the photo in a home decor book and scanned it into my computer using my
in-home scanner. I then took that photo into Microsoft word and used a few
photo filters to make the image less washed out. I then used the shapes
tool within Word to create some interesting green translucent boxes and a
circle to house the event information. I created and positioned my
text using text-boxes and the text formatting options found
within Word. I created gestalt within my design by keeping
things unified throughout the page with repeating
elements and colors. I chose fonts that would help
reiterate the vintage/eclectic feel and shapes that
echoed those found within the photo. I was amazed
at what I was able to create using such simple and
readily available tools: Microsoft Word and a simple
Canon scanner.

Event Flier
Description: A Black & White flier promoting a college graduate leadership
conference.
Date: January 25, 2015
Course: COMM 130
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Programs: Adobe Photoshop and InDesign
Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Process: The first step I took towards designing this flier was sketching out
ideas and layouts. After I saw all my ideas down on the page, I selected the
most interesting and took that to InDesign. In InDesign, I created a layout like
what I had drawn in my sketch with the assignments provided text content,
logo and image. As I created a digital rendition of my sketch I realized that I
needed to make a few changes.
For example, my original design had a giant question mark on the page in
response to the Do you want the competitive edge in business? question.
However, in execution it gave the wrong impression and did not help the
design. As I worked through my design, I added a few repeating
circles to add interest as well as movement to the flier. Another
big change I made after my first draft was that I decided
to reduce the photo and increase the white space within
the flier. I opted to keep the body copy small so I could
place the emphasis on the more pertinent information
for the event.

Stationery
Description: A coordinating letterhead and business card stationery system
created using a custom logo and layout.
Date: March 1, 2015
Course: COMM 130
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Programs: Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and
letterhead.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty
of white space.
Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email
on each piece.
Process: The first step in creating this project was designing my excavator
using the Adobe Illustrator Shapes, Line and Paintbrush tools. I
created my little excavator freehand after researching reference photos of
excavators typical of excavation companies. Next, I started my logo and
used the Text tool to layout the general text of Perry Excavation. I then
used the Create Outlines feature and the Direct Selection
tool to modify the text and attach the bucket/hoe of the
excavator I just created to the letter Y.
After my logo was complete I began to layout my
letterhead. I decided to continue the line from my
logo through across the top of the page to help
define the top of the page. I then laid out the text
for the rest of the letterhead using text boxes. Next, I
created the arrow to further unify the
letterhead and add movement
to the page. Finally I added
in my excavator watermark and
positioned it with alignments
in mind.

Business Card
Description: A coordinating letterhead and business card stationery system
created using a custom logo and layout.
Date: March 1, 2015
Course: COMM 130
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Programs: Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and
letterhead.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty
of white space.
Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email
on each piece.
Process: The process of creating my business card was mostly the same as
that of the letterhead. The first step in creating this project was designing my
excavator using the Adobe Illustrator Shapes, Line and Paintbrush tools.
I created my little excavator freehand after researching reference photos
of excavators typical of excavation companies. Next, I started my logo and
used the Text tool to layout the general text of Perry Excavation.
I then used the Create Outlines feature and the Direct
Selection tool to modify the text and attach the bucket/
hoe of the excavator I just created to the letter Y.
When I created my business card. I once again used
the logo and arrow to create a business card that was
consistent with the letterhead I just created. I again
used the watermark excavator so purpose of the
company was clear and
the stationery system
felt consistent.

Montage
Description This is an inspirational montage created by blending multiple images together using masks and filters within Photoshop.
Date: February 14, 2015
Course: COMM 130
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Programs: Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message
Blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image
Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scriptures)
Process: For this project I completed all the editing and arranging using
Adobe Photoshop. I began by searching for a photo of our temple I
liked. Unfortunately the layout of the photo was not going to work for my
composition so I had to merge and rearrange parts of the photo to fill the
desired layout area. Next I selected the Simon Dewey painting and our
family photo to montage on top of the temple. I applied numerous filters and
effects to the photos to help them better fit into my analogous color scheme
(teal, green, lime and yellow). Then I applied masks to the painting and
photo, masked the pictures as needed and applied a feathered
edge. Then I tweaked around with photo filters to help keep
a unified temperature throughout the photo. For my
typography, I simply used the type tools to create a
separate lines of text, used the eyedropper tool to
select a color from within the composition and then
applied drop shadows to make the text easier to read
against the light sky. Though I had several road blocks
along the way, I feel like in the end I was able to
address all the issues within my design
and come up with a
successful montage.

Logos
Description: Three unique logo variations for the same construction/concrete
company.
Date: February 22, 2015
Course: COMM 130
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Programs: Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or
personal image that will appeal to the audience.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. No Illustrator
pre-fabricated flares, symbols, etc. No photos or live-tracing.
Gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most
to them.
Process: This was an incredibly fun project to do. I created all three logos
entirely in Illustrator using the shapes, text, paint, pen, and direct selection
tools. Most of what I did I accomplished by maneuvering the anchor points
about using the direct selection tool. On each logo I began with the text and
arranged it the best I could as it was. Then I used the create outlines tool
to further manipulate the letters. The non-text elements I created using the
shape tool (circles, rectangles, triangles, etc.) and the paint brush
tool. . Font wise I wanted it to be easily legible and simple.
I wanted to keep the designs simple so they would be
easily recognizable. I tried my best to incorporate in the
aesthetic of the company into the logo so that it would
communicate that to the viewers. I chose masculine
and earthy colors and themes to suit the feel of the
northwestern location of the company and the
dynamic of its employees.

Photodesign
Description: For this assignment we were to demonstrate good photography
and use an original photo in a poster layout all coordinated within a color
scheme.
Date: February 7, 2015
Course: COMM 130
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Programs: Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn photography skills using a basic digital camera.
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then
incorporate the colors into the layout.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate
layers for non-destructive editing.
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
Process: For this project I began by searching for a great color scheme. I
knew I wanted to use lime and gold because of all the grass and leaves
outside, so I chose a Tetradic color scheme incorporating those colors
as well as indigo and violet. Next, I created a composition using bottles
and photographed it using a Canon PowerShot A1000 Is. Next I
edited the photo using the Levels, Vibrance, Sharpening and
Selective Color tools in Photoshop. Although my photo
already contained all the appropriate colors, I tweaked
a few areas to insure that they worked seamlessly into
the color scheme. Next, I created an 8.5in. x 11in.
document in Photoshop and inserted my photo into it.
I then used the Eyedropper tool to select colors from
the photo to use throughout my design. Next I laid
out my design and played with
the typography of my quote.
In the end, I feel like I was able
to create acohesive design
that worked well within my color
scheme.

Web Page
Description: A simple web page designed to showcase a logo I created.
Date: March 14, 2015
Course: COMM 130
Instructor: Julie Peterson
Programs: Notepad++ and Adobe Photoshop (to identify specific hex colors)
Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it
appeals to a target audience.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML.
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS.
Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.
Process: I created the web page using Notepad++ to modify the given HTML
and CSS files. I went into the HTML document and formatted and inserted
content as desired. Once everything was put in and linked to my CSS file, I
began to format things. I went through and changed all the Hex Colors to
match the colors of my logo. Then I modified the spacing, padding, margins,
etc. to give the design a more breathable feel. I also increased the border
size and changed text-families and styling to make them feel more unified
with the logo.
