PREFACE
Concrete
The operating loads which can be applied to anchors generally depend on the mechanical
properties of the base material. In the case of concrete, it is customary to refer to its
compressive strength.
According to Eurocode 2, the compressive strength of concrete is expressed in terms of
characteristic strength defined as being the strength value below which a maximum of 5% of the
whole possible strength measurements of the specified concrete must be located.
The strength must be determined according to ISO 4012 on cubic specimens 15 x 15 x 15 cm
(called fck, cube), or on cylindrical specimens 16 x 32 cm (called fck, cyl.) 28 days old, complying
with ISO 1920 and manufactured and stored according to ISO 2736.
Concrete is classified according to its compressive strength which is based on the classification
per strength measured on cylinders as indicated in Eurocode 2. For information, the table below
gives the correlation between characteristic values and average strength on cylindrical and
cubic specimens in MPa.

1 - EPOXY "CERAMIC 6" RESIN

1.1 - Definition and composition of EPOXY ceramic 6 resin
EPOXY CERAMIC 6 is made up of two components contained in a single cartridge with two
identical cylinders.
- The first cylinder contains epoxy resin (100%)
- The second cylinder contains hardener.
The following table summarises the characteristics of the components:

1.2. Operating principle

The mixture obtained by mixing the 2 components (epoxy resin + hardener) is injected in a
suitable hole from which all dust has been removed. Generally speaking, the quantity of mixture
to be injected should be equivalent to 50% of the volume of the hole.
The element to be fixed is inserted in the hole by hand, turning it back and forth, until it reaches
the end of the hole. The element should be clean and free from oil and grease. In this way the
Epoxy Ceramic 6 will be spread along the wall of the hole and completely envelop the element
to be fixed, bonding it to the wall.
The Epoxy Ceramic 6 gradually hardens and solidly bonds the element to the base material. The
resin should come back along the hole until it is at least flush with the wall surface.

NOTA: *These waiting times correspond to a safety factor of approximately 2 on the service load
and 1,5 on the ultimate load. All those hardening time have to be doubled for anchoring in humid
concrete.

1.3 - Suitable base materials

The present specification deals with the use of Epoxy Ceramic 6 in healthy reinforced or plain
concrete in a horizontal position or perpendicular to the ground. In the case of rendered concrete,
the thickness of the render should be disregarded when calculating the anchorage depth.
It is possible to use Epoxy Ceramic 6 in cracked concrete or hollow materials and other solid
construction materials, but the values indicated in this specification must not be used. Please
consult us regarding the specific tests to be conducted in such cases.

1.4 - Field of use

This specification aims at the use of EPCON resin for anchoring of stell reinforcment with the diameter
8 to 40 mm for concrete with characteristic strength on cylindrical specimens at 28 days of 20 Mpa
at the least.

This resin allowed to obtain strong fixings where the hole diameter is significantly larger than the
diameter of the rebar to be fixed (very limited shrinkage < 0,05%). See 5.

1.5 - Resistance of SPIT EPCON resin to chemical agents

The chemical resistance has been established by exposing resin samples to various substances.
The resistance of the samples was established by visual inspection and classified in 3 levels
(resistant, sensitive, not resistant).
The various substances tested and the resistance of the SPIT EPCON resin are given in
appendix 1

1.6 - Resistance of the SPIT EPCON resin to temperature

1.6.1 - Freezing / thawing cycles
Freezing/thawing cycle tests were carried out in accordance with the ICBO AC58,
ASTM E 1512 and ASTM E 488 specifications. The fixing was subject to 50 freezing/
thawing cycles with holding times of 3 hours at temperatures of - 23C et + 40 C.
These positive and negative temperature variations had no effect on the performance of
the SPIT EPCON fixing.
1.6.2 - Resistance as a function of temperature
Temperature tests were performed at 0C up to 140C. For the various temperatures
tested, extraction tests were carried out after the fixing had been exposed in an oven at a
constant temperature for 24 hours.
The effect of the temperature is given in the following graph:

3 - TENSILE TESTS ON REBARS

We have determined by experiment the mini anchoring depths for different strength of concrete in
order to obtain the mini. rupture strength according to NFA 35016 standard. The mini. drilling
diameter has been determined in order to enable the free introduction of the rebars in drilling.
The following table gives results (in mm) for rebar steel Fe E 500.

4.2 - Anchoring depth calculation

Considering the hypothesis proved during the tests that the ultimate adhesive strength of resin
versus concrete is at least equal to the one of high adhesion rebar in concrete, anchoring
depth (ls) in mm can be given by the equality :
As.fe = u.ls. su
or

As
fe
u
su
s
ftj

(1) (see BAEL 91 page 44)

= Nominal cross-section of rebar in mm2
= Elastic limit of rebar in N/mm2
= f (drilling diameter in mm
= Adhesive strength = 0,6.2s.ftj (in N/mm2)
= Fixing coefficient = 1 for plain rounds and 1,5 for high adhesion rebars
= Characteristic tensile strength of concrete in N/mm2 or Mpa

The ultimate load for rebar is As.fe with s = factor of security = 1,15
s
The equation (1) becomes:
Ultimate load (in Newton) : f.ls.0,6.2s.ftj.1
s
Ultimate load : .0,6.1,52.f.ls.ftj = 3,69.f.ls.ftj
1,15
ls (mm) =

Ultimate load (N) .

3,69.f (mm) ftj (MPa)

Limit of this formula

- Drilling diameter cannot exceed 3 times the nominal diameter of rebar: f 3 rebar .
- The useful anchoring depth should be 12,5 times rebar without ultimate load reduction
and equal to 10 times rebar for a reduction of this load by 20 %.
- The maxi. anchoring depth will be limited to 900 mm.
- In any case, we cannot exceed 2 cartridges per fixing.

5 - DIMENSIONING TABLE OF ANCHORING

These tables are the application of the formula 4.2. taking into account the limit of use.
For HA Fe E 500 rebars and for a possible maxi ultimate load per rebar diameter, they give :
- The anchoring depth for a certain drilling diameter and concrete strength
- The theoritical number of fixings per EPCON cartridge
For an ultimate load below the maxi ultimate load, anchoring depths can be reduced in the same
proportion without being lower than 10 times the rebar .

6 - INSTALLATION
Preparation

Drill a hole according to the selected diameter

(tables of dimensions of anchoring). The hol
may be drilled with a diamond bit, but rebar
location must be determined in order to avoid
cutting them.
Carefully brush the surface of
the hole with a metal brush.

B
Blow the dust out of the hole.
NB: The hole may also be
cleaned with a jet of water.

VERY
IMPORTANT

Injection
Inject from the bottom of the hole, gradually
filling it until 50 % fult.

Insert the rebar by hand with a twisting motion

until the end of the hole is reached. The rod
must be clean and free from oil and grease.
Check that the hole is well filled (no air
bubbles). A slight excess should emerge.
Wait for the resin to harden before applying the
load (see table page 3).

7 - VALIDITY OF SPECIFICATIONS END OF JUNE 2008

The validity of this specifications is permanent as long as the NF mark is maintained and it is
bound to the evolution of calculation codes of concrete structures (Eurocode 2).
