Foothill Speech & Debate Team

What is debate?
Debate is a formal contest of arguments on a
controversial issue.
There are two sides to the conversation: the armative and the negative.
The armative defends this action while the negative opposes it through
presenting its current and potential drawbacks. To debate, one needs
substantial evidence and counters to back his or hers arguments. High
school debaters in the US prepare for regional and national tournaments
by researching and writing cases for both sides of a monthly topic.
Important Reminder: Our club mainly covers two types of debate: Public
Forum and Lincoln Douglas debate. For more information, please visit our
website.

Why debate?
It can change your life.
Debate improves public speaking skills, cognitive abilities,
persuasive abilities, and academic outcome. Above all, debate gives
you a voice because across the nation, debaters argue their views on
policies that can change the world.

1. Become smarter. A 1999 Wall St. Journal studyrevealed that

interscholastic speech and debate give students a decisive edge in
college admissions, by as much as 30% more than non-forensic peers. A
2009 study in Chicago schools reports debaters have anaverage GPA
of .20 points higher than non-debating peers.

2. Speak eloquently. Did you know Brad Pitt, Oprah Winfrey,

Bruce Springsteen, and Margaret Thatcher all participated in debate?
Speech and debate students canproficiently conduct group discussions
andinterpersonal conversations in real-worldsettings.

3. Research and Communicate Eectively. As

competitors invest eort sometimes comparable to a graduate school
thesis, debaters learn to write, research, read, and speak at a college
level. Instead of memorizing boring facts, debaters are motivated to
engage in constructive discussion and examine variousforms of
literature across curriculums.
