For the most part, going wine tasting is about the easiest thing in
the world, especially here in California where wineries and tasting
rooms abound. You can find wineries specializing in red wines of all
types, those that are famous for their white wines and others who
pour sparkling wine. It is a matter of doing a little research and
planning your day. Most tasting rooms open around 10 a.m. and
close between 4:30 and 6 p.m. Here are some tips that have proven
to be helpful and are designed to help make the sensory adventure of
wine tasting all the more enjoyable.
Before you start off pack a few essentials: Water (plenty of water)
and something to snack on crackers or a baguette. Many wineries
have picnic areas and there are plenty of delis and bakeries that can
make up a lunch for you, or make your own. Which brings us to
eating and drinking, the kind that doesnt directly involve wine.
Be sure to nibble during the day and make sure you make time for
lunch. Two tips: drink at least twice as much water as you do wine,
and remember that you dont have to drink everything poured into
your glass. There is a reason tasting bars have dump buckets and a
pitcher of water to wash out your glass.
Dont be afraid to ask questions. Time and time again I have heard
knowledgeable winery workers say that there is no such thing as a
stupid question, and they mean that.
You can drink what you want, in the order you want. If you only like
www.WineCountryThisWeek.com
reds, say so; if you dont like sweet wines, speak up. But the idea of
starting with whites, then going on to reds and then sweet wines is a
good guide. Zinfandel is red. I am sure you know that but it never
hurts to remind everyone.
If there is a particular wine you want to try and it is not on the list,
ask. There might be a bottle around that was opened for a trade
tasting or by the winemaker. Most tasting rooms are happy to pour a
little if you show enthusiasm.
Take notes on the wines you most enjoyed.
Take advantage of tours when the winery offers them, but keep in
mind that they take anywhere from 20 minutes to well over an hour,
so one a day is plenty.
Buy wines that you can only find at the winery. These often include
smaller (375 ml) bottles of limited production Ports or dessert wines.
Dont buy a wine you can get at a supermarket back home. Youll pay
more, and besides, whats the point?
Look for tasting rooms in towns. Many of these are cooperative
tasting rooms, where in one place you might find wines from a dozen
or more small-to-medium premium producers. They are scattered
throughout the area and more are opening all the time.
Dont give too much thought to ratings and vintages. Its like art: if
you like it, its a good wine. It is as simple as that.
Remember that you dont have to do the driving. It takes no more
than a phone call hire a transportation company to do the driving.

What is tannin?
Wine dryness, which provides palate-like structure for red
wine, comes from tannin, a natural chemical compound of grape
skins, seeds, stems, and oak. Its a key component of red wine and,
if uncontrolled, gives wine harshness and astringency. It can do
the same to wine as it does to a cup of hot tea after it cools down
make it bitter and hard to drink.
The majority of wine tannin is extracted during juice
maceration and fermentation. Naturally, red wine, by virtue of its
longer contact time with grape skins, has significantly more
tannin, that is, dryness, than white wine. A secondary source of
tannin comes from the oak barrels in which wine is aged. Wood
tannin contributed by barrels varies, depending on the type of oak
and toasting temperature.
Tannin also acts as a wine stabilizer, helping it age longer by
protecting aroma and flavor. It enables long-term aging in bottle, a
reason why you dont find as many old white wines as red.

In a normal weather year, wed be having a different kind of
conversation than we will this year, especially as regards cover crops.
Answering why requires that we take a slight detour and first
discuss the uses of cover crops in order to understand how incipient
drought flips a lot of agricultural best practices onto their heads in
order to balance soil health with viability. Agriculture of any kind is,
by nature, an informed gamble with Nature, but because vines arent
replanted yearly like other row crops, there is an additional high
stakesness about water usage, which cover cropping impacts
immensely since what the crops take, the vines dont get.
Heres some context: before a vineyard is planted, it is considerably
easier to add amendments than after, but even then, theres only so
much which can be done. Its also a given that the vines, like any
crop, will pull nutrients, minerals and water from the soil, so the
need to replenish the soil is there regardless. Farming is farming,
meaning there is always the option of allowing fields to lie fallow in
between taking vines out and planting, but with an average of
twenty-five to thirty years between plantings and having to wait three

While Bennett Lane Winery, owned by Randy and Lisa Lynch, has only been in the wine
business for almost 12 years, their wines have made quite an impact throughout the wine
world, with three dozen 90+ wines, two-thirds in the last five years. These folks know
Cabernet in a few short years like few others ever have in the Valley, and theyve done so
without pricing their wines through the roof or putting on airs in the process. The point, in
other words, isnt just to make great wines the goal is to go above and beyond and give
memorable experiences.
The winery itself is positioned at the dove-tailing wedge of the eastern Vaca and
western Mayacamas at the top of the Valley. The combination of soil, exposure and breeze
makes about as perfect a spot for wine as exists anywhere on the planet. The private lane
which greets you is surrounded by vines, and the multi-story, artfully shaped winery feels
set within the land.
The tasting room is contemporary and funky, a rustic Mediterranean seen through the
lens of the North Bay. It gives a mix of natural stone and wood, and the Napa-typical red
pine of the barrel room nicely accents the color palette. Outside are multiple decks and
pergolas, each providing views of the Mayacamas, and the soft tinkling of the large water
fountain accompanies all this, underlying the feeling of being in the Valley. The winerys
iPad app adds a nice touch since its loaded with info yet unobtrusive for those who want
their tasting sans the details. Everything, in other words, has definitely been thought out
with the experience in mind.
For your tasting, youve got quite a range of choices, too, especially given the attention
paid to Cabernet, obviously. There are three different Cabs, by the way, as well as the
renowned Maximus Red Feasting Wine, which adds Syrah into the usual Bordeaux buddies

APRIL IN CARNEROS
16 Wineries to Participate in April 18-19 Event
Tickets Are $45 In Advance At Www.Aprilincarneros.Com
The only appellation in Wine Country that can boast the accolades
of both Sonoma and Napa is the Carneros region at the southern end
of both counties. More than 25 years ago, a group of wineries
banded together to promote the area and extol the qualities of the
vineyards and the fine wines they produce. At present, more than
30 wineries are members of the organization which presents two
annual wine tasting open houses, April in Carneros and Holiday in
Carneros. Known primarily as an excellent Chardonnay and Pinot
Noir growing region, the Carneros appellation is also becoming
known for such surprises as Grenache, Merlot and Petite Syrah due
to the warm days and the cool nights of the growing season in
Carneros.
April in Carneros celebrates the arrival of springtime in wine
country while Holiday in Carneros ushers in the holiday season with
all of the wineries decked out in their holiday finery at this most
wonderful time of the year! Both events offer guests the opportunity
to visit familiar and new wineries in the region at special open
houses. Taste wines, new releases as well as cellar gems, barrel
tastings, reserve tastings, discounts and special pricing, live music,
good food and discover what makes each winery in Carneros a
unique experience.
Tickets are $45 per person if purchased in advance at the website

Poseidon Vineyard
Los Carneros, Napa
Peter Molnar
In celebration of Earth Day on Wednesday April 22, Tricycle Wine Partners is proud to
continue its commitment of ecological preservation with the release of its second vintage of
Ros for the Bay, a Pinot Noir-based ros from the famed Los Carneros appellation.
The grapes are grown at Poseidon Vineyard which is owned and farmed by the family of
Peter Molnar, one of three founding partners of the winery. As the vintner, Peter intentionally
crafted this ros to support San Francisco Baykeeper, a non-profit organization using science
and clean water laws to improve habitats and communities reliant on a thriving Bay ecosystem.
A life-long sailor, Bay swimmer, active Skipper and member of Baykeepers Board of Directors,
Peter is dedicated to helping the organization defend the Bay from pollution and its worst
offenders. From the 300-case wine production, 100% of winery proceeds go directly toward
funding the organizations efforts to restore the Bays natural balance.
Our Poseidon Vineyard abuts the wetlands of northern San Francisco Bay at the southern
edge of Carneros. The fogs triggered by the intertidal tracts are key to the quality of our fruit.
Our work is intertwined with the life of the Bay we hope to continue to farm alongside a
rich, vibrant and healthy estuary, Peter remarked.
Peter not only oversees the sustainable growing practices at two vineyard sites Poseidon
Vineyard in Napa Carneros and Obsidian Ridge in Lake County, but he also manages their
cooperage in the Tokaj region of Hungary where centuries old sustainable logging and
replanting practices are implemented. We approach everything with a light touch, Peter says.
The best vineyards require the least amount of work so we only do things which are
necessary. Our goal is simple: make good wines that are regionally correct and reflect their site.
Operating over 80% solar-powered and under a Fish-Friendly Certification and California
Code of Sustainable Winegrowing, they make their wines naturally and traditionally.
The 2014 Ros for the Bay will be released this Earth Day (April 22) at both the tasting
room located at Cornerstone in Sonoma off Arnold Drive (Highway 121) and on the
website at www.tricyclewine.com.
Also look for the ros at select restaurants/retailers in the Bay area including Hog Island
Oysters (San Francisco), Fish (Sausalito), Vintage Berkeley (Berkeley), Northbrae Bottle Shop
(Berkeley).
For more information on the winery, visit their website: www.tricyclewine.com or to learn
more about San Francisco Baykeeper, visit www.baykeeper.org.

Best Winery in Napa award for 5 consecutive years in the Bay Area A-List.
2012 Winery of the Year by Connoisseurs guide to fine wine.
Founded in 1992, today Frank Family owns 380 acres of the finest vineyard land
in Napa Valley and has one of the biggest word-of-mouth followings in the wine
country. First constructed as the Larkmead Winery in 1884, the historic stone
building on the property was refinished with native sandstone from the nearby
hills in 1906. The massive stone edifice is considered one of the finest structures
in the Napa Valley; it appears on the National Register of Historical Places and is
listed as a Point of Historical Interest in the state of California.

Chateau Ador
City Convenience and Award-Winning Wines
BY SHOSHANA HEBSHI
A highlight not to miss is the Red Onion wine, the only of its
kind, according to Wong, made commercially in the United States.
Often homemade in Korean and Japanese culture, the red onion wine
is said to have healing properties, including relief from migraines,
more restful sleep, relief from joint pain and lowering high blood
pressure and cholesterol.
Wong says if visitors bring a bottle of this wine back to their
mothers, she will certainly appreciate the gift.
Chateau Ador also specializes in creating private labels for special
occasions, such as birthdays, weddings and anniversaries. Many of
these private labels are on display in the tasting room.
If you have time to spare, take a picnic lunch with you, grab a
bottle of wine and hang out on the arbor-covered patio. Youll be sure
to be treated like family Sonoma County style.
Chateau Adors tasting room is open by appointment during the
week and from 12 to 5 p.m. on the weekends. Contact
info@jjcustomwines.com or call (707) 548-3979 to reserve a tasting.

BILL BATCHELOR
BY TANYA SEIBOLD
52
What does an anthropologist slash filmmaker have in common with a winemaker? More than
youd think actually. Craft, creativity and science. These are the hallmarks of quality filmmaking as
we know it today. They also happen to be the foundational blocks for making exceptional wine.
Heading a diverse winemaking program, Bill Batchelor has found a unique way to apply his degrees
in both Anthropology and Film Science to become a successful, self-taught winemaker who started
as a harvest intern at Preston Vineyards back in 1996, to now Head of Winemaking and General
Manager at Martin Ray Winery in the Russian River Valley.
For me, I definitely see a direct correlation between making films and making wine. Just like any
good director, you need to understand the people on your team who they are, what motivates
them, the business culture, and then keep surrounding yourself with talent in order to produce the
best picture, or in our case, bottle of wine, he said. Speaking about his approach to winemaking,
Bill proudly shares his vision to create an atmosphere of teamwork with his Assistant Winemaker,
Lindsey Haughton. Were very much a team here. I welcome Lindseys palate perspective and we
continuously bounce different taste and flavor profiles off one another.
Bill also believes that like with any great movie, it all begins with a great script. I thrive on all
aspects of the winery process. Through careful grape selection, we source only stellar fruit from our
vineyards in Sonoma County (Russian River and Green Valleys), mountain sites in Napa Valley (Stags
Leap District and Diamond Mountain), and cooler-climate blocks in Santa Cruz. Our meticulous
production and blending practices safeguard the optimum quality of each vine. We dont take
ourselves too seriously here, but we are serious about each step in making wine. Creating a point of
difference and over-delivering quality for price is important to us. We use modern methods and
equipment, just with some old-world techniques thrown in, Bill concludes.
Martin Ray Winery is the oldest continuously operated winery facility in California having
produced wine there since 1881. Founder Martin Ray himself was considered a pioneer back in the
1930s by planting unique clones of Pinot Noir. Now, Martin Rays new parcel of seven blocks
includes one acre of the highly-prized, original Mt. Eden clone soon to be featured in singlevineyard bottlings sold exclusively at the winerys tasting room. Taste their full portfolio of varietals,
including Russian River Petite Sirah, a Rhne-style white blend, Napa Valley Cabernet and their Ros
of Pinot Noir, which sells out each vintage. For more information, visit the website at

Perfect Pairs
BY MELISSA VOGT

Dianna Barr
1 lb jumbo shrimp
B.R. Cohn Meyer Lemon Olive Oil
sea salt
pepper
garlic salt
DIRECTIONS:
Drizzle B.R. Cohn Meyer Lemon Olive Oil on both sides of the shrimp.
Sprinkle with sea salt, pepper and garlic salt.
BBQ the shrimp for 3-4 minutes per side until they turn pink in color.
Serve with long-grain and/or wild rice.
Dianna pairs this delicious summer dish with B.R. Cohn Sauvignon Blanc. The fruitful
quality of the wine pairs great with the lemon flavor of the shrimp kababs.
Dreams location not only puts the concert goer two blocks from
Sonomas Plaza, it allows the festival the opportunity to grow and
generate more proceeds for charity. This years beneficiaries include
national and local veterans organizations including Fisher House and
American Legion Post 489, the Redwood Food Bank, Bread and
Roses and others to be announced. Over its 28-year history BRCCE
has raised more than 6.5 million dollars for charity.
This is a very impressive three-day line-up, exclaimed Bruce
Cohn. Not only do we get to finally present a Beatle, but all of these
great acts are a perfect fit for Sonoma and wine country. Come up to
stay, shop and enjoy this great music-filled fundraising weekend.
The Field of Dreams set-up, while different than the winery setup, still allows in the BRCCE tradition, great sight lines and access no
more than 150 feet from the stage. With the newly added night time
headliners, video and projection screens will make sure you dont
miss a thing happening on stage. These are rain or shine shows.
Plans call for the best music, food and wine Sonoma has to offer.
Many of the regions finest purveyors are joining in, including
Lagunitas Brewing, a pop-up HopMonk beer garden, high-end and
popular restaurants and, of course, some of the best wine in
California including B.R. Cohn and many others. There will be no in
and out privileges.

Coro Mendocino
Established in 2000, Coro is the only American example of
winemakers coming together to set standards for a class of wines to
represent a particular wine region. That region is Mendocino County,
a diverse area that encompasses a variety of climates and soils, and
boasts a mixture of multi-generational winemakers with deep Italian
roots alongside newcomers with extensive and varied backgrounds.
Coro means chorus in Italian, and it represents the crafting of the
Mendocino terroir into wines that sing on the palate.
Every Coro wine is a signature blend, individually crafted in
Mendocino County from 100 percent Mendocino County grapes, in
strict accordance with the Coro Mendocino bylaws. Each Coro wine
must lead with between 40-70 percent Zinfandel and may be blended
with up to nine named varietals, honoring the Old Italian field
blends of Mendocino. Every bottle is held to strict protocols, and
must be aged at least one year in the barrel and one year in the bottle,
followed by blind-tasting by the winemakers before it can be deemed
a Coro wine.

GUGLIELMO WINERY
Celebrating its 90th Anniversary
Guglielmo Winery welcomes 2015 as it marks the 90th anniversary of the founding of
the Emilio Guglielmo Estate Vineyard and Winery. The Guglielmo family will commemorate
the event of their grandfather, Emilio Guglielmos, signing of the deed to the original 15 acres
of land in Morgan Hill, by hosting a black tie celebration at the winery on Saturday,
September 12. In addition prizes and special events throughout the year will be planned for
both the general public and their wine club members (Guglielmo Wine Group).
Purchased in 1925, Emilio and Emilia Guglielmo, hailing from Italys Piemonte region,
planted the seeds of a dream that still blossoms today. Grandsons George E., Gene and Gary
operate the winery facility that has grown to 82 acres upon the original estate property.
When our grandfather first purchased the property, it was only 15 acres and the house
we grew up in, said George E. Guglielmo, eldest brother and Head Winemaker. Over time
the family was able to purchase the surrounding property, add a larger winemaking facility,
tasting room and multi-purpose event center. Gene Guglielmo, Director of Sales and middle
brother continues, After his service in WWII our father, George W., joined the business,
married our mother, Madeline, and together they continued making wines and building the
business through their hard work and hospitality. Gary Guglielmo, General Manager and
youngest of the three brothers notes, Its not often that any business makes it to 90 years,
especially in the same family and at the same location. Were proud of what our family has
accomplished and want to celebrate by thanking our loyal customers and welcoming new
ones.
Visit www.guglielmowinery.com for additional information on future events, activities
and its award-winning wines.
