Accent Reading: Consonant Sound /V/

The /V/ sound

V To properly make the V sound in English you
should raise your lower lip and lightly place it against
the bottom of your top teeth and initiate the sound
with your vocal chords from your throat (like saying the
vowel E). V is a voiced sound, it actually uses the same
mouth position as F but an F sound is un-voiced.
To begin, listen to how these words are pronounced. Be sure
to listen to the way the V sound in the first column is
pronounced as compared to the W sound in the second
column.

Listening Exercise
1. vet
2. vine
3. vent
4. van
5. vile

Now its your turn, practice saying the words on the right
and then compare the difference in sounds.

Beginning V Sounds:
1. volume
2. valet
3. venom

8. version
9. verbal
10. vacation
11. vacuum
12. voting
13. vacated
14. villain
15. vocation
16.

Practice this some more with the words in the columns on the right. The first column are a set of words
that use the V sound at the beginning of the word (initial).
The second column represents words that use the V sound in the middle of the word (medial).
The third column represents words that use the V sound as the end of the word (final).
Use a mirror to observe your mouth and make sure that your top teeth are gently touching your bottom
lip. Its not a big movement so dont put your teeth over the front of your bottom lip.

Mixed V Sounds
I love to go to the movies. Last weekend, we saw a very invigorating movie. It was about Venice, Italy.
The scenes in the movie were very vibrant. A family of five went on a vacation to Venice. They ate
Italian food, saw many sights, and had a very festive time. They liked the city so much that they
moved there.
