WRITING INTERVIEWPROTOCOLS AND CONDUCTING INTERVIEWS:

TIPS FOR STUDENTS NEW TO THE FIELDOF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH.

In order to make interview become successful, we have to follow the advice bellows;

1.Pick the topic which interest you.


Choose the topic based on your interest. Why? Because it will be easy for you since it was the
things that you like. And you will enjoy it more when you are working on it.

2.Research should have to guide the question.


Before writing the question, you have to understand the literature first. By using it, will be
helpful for you to developing question that are grounded in the literature.

3.Use script from beginning to the end of your question.


A script will be helpful since it contains information that needed and the script function is as
reminder for you about the information contains on it.

4. Open ended question


Why have to be open ended? If the question is close ended question, there are only 2 possible
answer, yes or no. And these type of the question are not allowed in the interview.

5. Starts with the basic.


To build the trust between you and the participants, you have to collect the background of data of
the participants it self.

6. Begin with easy to answer questions and move towards ones that are more difficult or
controversial.
You can not start the interview from big problem question. You have to arrange the question first
starts from the easy one to the difficult.

7. The phrase tell me aboutis great way to start a question.


This phrase will make the interviewee begins to talk too much.

8. Write big, expansive question.


Expansive question will allow the participant to take the question in several direction

9. Use prompts
Create prompts for each of the questions helps keep you on track. Prompts also help to remind of
the questions while at the same time allowing for unexpected data to emerge.

10. Be willing to make on the spot revisions to your interview protocol.


If there is a question which occur suddenly in interview, ask i. Sometimes that question makes a
great project comes to you in the moment. You should learn to trust your instincts in interview.

11. Dont make the interview too long.


You dont have to make interview too long. Because they may get tired easily. Furthermore, if
you are interest quickly.

12. Practice with a friend.


It is a good idea for you to practice how to ask question in interview to make the interview
become successful.

13.Make sure that you have set up a second shorter interview to help you clarify or ask any
questions you missed after you have transcribed the interview.
Once you read over the transcribed interview, you may not understand what was said or what
your interviewee meant and a second shorter interview lets you clear up anything that you dont
understand.
14. If needed, clear your project with your schools Institutional Research Board (IRB)
A good interview protocol is essential to getting the best information from the participants in
your study. Going through the IRB process gives both you and your institution assurance that
you are not harming the people you study.
