LEARNING PLAN (How will you organize student learning in this lesson?

ACTIVATE

Students will be shown examples of 3D forms found in nature and

found in architecture.
ACQUIRE & APPLY

1. Collaborative Problem Solving:

Students will be divided into small groups (3-5 students). Each
group will be given a paper cube. Together, they will decide how
that paper cube was created. They will be given paper, scissors,
and glue to recreate the cube within 10-15 minutes.
2. Discussion/Demonstration:
Each group will have a turn to present their cube and to name 1
thing that they found difficult. Afterwards, the teacher will do a
demonstration using the white board (or overhead projector) of
how to measure and plan ahead to create a cube. The teacher will
explain how to plan ahead using tabs/flaps when connecting
edges.
For the second part of the demonstration, the students will gather
around an area to watch the teacher use an X-Acto Knife. The
teacher will explain safety procedures and how to cut/score (cut
edges, score folds). The teacher will then explain the assignment
and expectations.
3. Research and Work time
Students will be allowed time to use computers to research
how to create 2D shapes. Student will use the remainder of
class to work on creating 3D : Cube, Pyramid, Tetrahedron,
etc.
4. Reflect
The last 5-10 minutes of class students will complete an exit slip.
Students will use their sketchbook to write an entry about
something that they found difficult and something that they
learned. They will draw a quick sketch of a cube mapped out.
**Use the large and small group discussion to evaluate the student
involvement and excitement. Use a thumbs up/down/middle to
gauge how well the students understand the assignment and how
enthused they are.
