History Notes:
Council of Trent: got rid of indulgences took a lot of years. By the end
of century Europe is back tor 75% catholic.
Charles the 1519, advocates 1555. Grandson of King of Austria,
Grandmother gave him some of France, Mother gave all of Spain, first
one in 7 centuries to inherit a large part of Europe personally, elected
in _________ to rule roman empire. Owns a lot of land. HE wont fight
protestants because he knows it will start civil war. Some of his land
was split between Protestants and Catholics, his choice as king, in
1555 advocate his thrown and go to a monestary because he thinks he
going to hell because he didnt fight Protestants. HIge war over Italian
states from 1494-1559. That war takes all energy so that they cant
fight about religions.
Ottomans become protectors of Islam. 1529 ottomans defeated by
Charles the fifth
Henry the 5th splits empire in 1559, tries to build up Spain because it is
poorer and easier to start up. Gives half to Phillip (his son, doesnt like
Protestants) gives other half to his brother who ends up giving it up to
his son. Because Spain is so poor he takes richest part of land
(Netherland) and gives it to Spain. IN 1555 (Phillip starts rule of spain,
expects nothing from it) Spanish economy changes to best because it
starts shipping gold that is mined from Mexico. In a decade of Phillip
taking over Spain every other country Is much poorer than Spain.
Netherlands has protestants which Phillip does not like (no Protestants
allowed in Spain). He does not view necessity for peace through
religion unlike his father Charles.
Charles dies 1556, `559 italian wars are over, Phillip takes over 1555
spain, at time Netherlands is run by Phillips half sister, Margaret. Phillip
lets her run it. Margret had been easy on protestants, believed
protestants and catholics could co-exist. Margaret had a lot of lovers.
Snuck them through the tunnels. Phillip removes her form Netherlands
and put a Spaniard to take over. Kicks out/ kills protestants.
Protestants start fleeing north.
1572 sea beggers attack protestant islands from ships. Prince Willliam
Van Orange will help protestants if they want help if not hell leave.
They do. PROTESTANTS START RECEIVING MILITIA STARTS DUTCH
REVOLT AGAINST SPAIN. SOLVED IN 1648. War goes back and forth.
William does not go down very south. 1584 William of warren is shot

and killed by a catholic monk. Sudely there is a problem because

Williams character is what kept war going . Dutch are hanging on.
Spain having trouble feeding and paying troops. So war went on and
off. Phillip has another goal he doesnt want to drive protestants out of
low countrys but also take over England. He is married to queen Mary
of England, She dies so he takes the thrown. With William dead he is
going to move troops to shore of Netherlands and transfer them to
