Hundreds of women and children were

More than 200 were released by fighters in

HE mechanic is popular in

his care. And theres a
reason for his repeat clientele.
After hes done with your car, he
presents the itemised billing and a
plastic bag containing the parts he

The last line in the bill is
classified under labour cost
which varies on the amount of time
he or his co-workers spent on your

would anyone bat an eyelid?
So, when the waiter at a five-star
hotel presents the bill for the meal
complete with the service tax and
GST, would you refuse to pay for
the service?
This is the crux of the issue that
politicians and civil servants are
falling over themselves and yet
unable to provide plausible
explanations for their antics which
have now become a comedy of
errors.
Lets get to basics. There is no
law preventing anyone from
Shah Pahlavis corrupt royalist regime. The Shah had been groomed
to be the chief US enforcer in the

More than a dozen American efforts to overthrow the Islamic government in Tehran have failed. Washington resorted to sabotage and
economic warfare, sought to throttle
Irans primary exports, oil and gas,
to derail its banking system, and
prevent imports of everything from
machinery to vitamins.

Tear-free onions
THE SOBBING
of a chef as he
chops onions
in the kitchen
could be a
thing of the
past, thanks to
one Japanese
company,
which says it has
produced a tear-free vegetable.
Scientists say they have managed to
disable the production of a powerful
subtance an onion releases as the knife slices
into it, cutting down on the pungent fumes
that bring tears to the eyes.
House Foods Group said, in a press
release, that it bombarded the brown bulb
with irradiating ions in a process that
drastically reduces the level of a certain
enzyme that is key to this process.
A spokesman said no decision had yet
been made on whether they would
commercialise their tear-free onions.
The companys researchers won the Ig
Nobel Prize an award handed out to
honour achievements organisers consider
unintentionally funny in 2013 for their
discovery of the biochemical process behind
how onions make people blubber. AFPRelaxnews

Maxify-ing growth
ANON Marketing
(Malaysia) Sdn Bhd
recently introduced a
new brand of
multifunctional and singlefunction office printers called
Maxify, which are designed to
multiply business productivity
and offer cost savings for SoHos
(small office/home office).
Canon Marketing president
and CEO Wataru Nishioka
said: Canons Pixma and
imageClass brands have been
the cornerstone of creativity
and innovation in the printer
market globally for many
years
Now, with Maxify, we
are confident we can further
penetrate the market by
meeting the specific printing
needs of businesses in the
public and private sectors.
The three models in the
new range are the Maxify
MB5370 and MB5070
multifunctional printers as
well as the single function
Maxify iB4070.
Canon Marketing
Consumer System Products
Division assistant director
Jeffrey Kung said: With
these Maxify printer models,
businesses can enjoy highvolume colour printing
at a low cost and benefit
from advanced security
features, network and cloud
connectivity features.
In addition, these models
come with a three-year on-site
warranty.
Kung said the concept of
Maxify multiplying business
growth is attributed to the
fact that the printer line-up
complements both high and
moderate printing demands.
With the Maxify MB5370
and iB4070s built-in dual 250sheet paper cassettes, users
can print up to 500 pages
with ease, forgoing
the need to outsource
high volume print
jobs ever again.
Alternatively, for
those with moderate
printing needs, the
Maxify MB5070 can
get the job done with
its single 250-sheet
cassette.

also enhances cost

volume printing capacity of
2,500 pages for documents
in black and 1,500 pages for
colour.
Alternatively, there is an
option for the standard yield
ink capacities packaged with
the printers of up to 1,000
pages for black and 700 pages
in colour, said Kung.
Moreover, Canons new
dual resistant high density ink
(DRHD) offers print durability
with excellent water and
marker resistant properties on
plain paper.
Amendments can be made
immediately on freshlyprinted documents without
fear of ink smudges; even
common water spill mishaps
will not pose a
problem.
Colour prints also exhibit
photo-realistic quality prints
for business proposals even on
a plain office-grade paper.
The built-in twin scanner
sensors ensures double-sided
documents can be scanned
in a single paper pass. This
is available in the Maxify
MB5370 which is Canons first
desktop inkjet printer with this
feature.
Both the MB5370 and
MB5070 models also cater to
file sharing within the office.
The Scan to Network feature
saves copies into a desired
shared folder within the office
network coverage.
Quicker access to important
documents even when on the
move is assured with Maxifys
Scan to
Email feature.
With WiFi connectivity,
users may even print and scan
effortlessly from their mobile
device via the Maxify Printing
Solutions (MPS) app, which is
compatible with both iOS and
Android OS platforms.
The Maxify Cloud Link
service also allows printing
from and scanning to a cloud
storage provider such as
Google Drive, Dropbox and
Evernote as well as Apple
AirPrint and Google Cloud
Print.
Setting Restrictions restrict
unauthorised access to the
printer and documents, an
important feature when
the device is shared among
multiple users.
Administrators may
include passwords to
secure their device
and retain their
standard printer
settings.
The Maxify
MB5370 is priced at
RM1,108; MB5070
at RM908 and
iB4070 at RM518,
respectively.
These printers
are now available
at selected Canon
authorised outlets.

DIRT CAN AFFECT BATTERY
IF YOUR smartphone battery constantly goes
dead, or the device freezes while playing

be as simple as dirt, according to German
computer magazine ct.
PREVENTING DIZZINESS
DIZZINESS and even nausea are not
uncommon symptoms for people
using virtual reality glasses or playing
computer games that hyper-realistically
simulate life. The cure, said a group of
US researchers, is a virtual nose.
Feelings of disorientation crop up
during virtual experiences because using
the technology forces a persons eyes to
process images and movements for which
the body cannot properly adjust. The
problem even has a name: simulator
sickness.
But the researchers at Purdue University
in Indiana believe that by placing an image
of a nose on the screen, they can give
people a point on which to focus.

It depends on which region you are
in. For example in Asia, women do
not like to have any increased level
of tanning. So it's important to find a
product that gives sun protection
throughout the day for both UVA
and UVB rays. Choose your sun
protection with SPF50 and PA++++
and you should get this type of
product from a reputable brand.
Any good habits to develop to
achieve good looking skin?
It is important for you to clean your
skin in a non-aggressive way. And
use a light scrub once or twice a
week. That's the absolute minimum.
Cleansing devices are very
popular these days.
If they are non-aggressive, why not?
Skin is a very sensitive organ and
when it is attacked, it always reacts.
So I always advise women to take
proper care of their skin.
Should one use a moisturiser with
SPF or without?
Personally I prefer women to use a
moisturiser without sun protection
then apply a day screen with SPF50.
I understand that some women
prefer to buy a single product with
SPF than buy a separate sun
protection product. But they will not
get the same degree of protection of
a SPF50 day screen.

anybody behaves in a heavyhanded manner, you try to avoid
doing the same with others. If you arent

ALTHOUGH its been over a
week since it took place, youre
still reflecting on both the events and heightened

This influenced everybody, but accented the

others need more time.

DEALING with the clash between
your ruler the Sun and both Pluto,

YOURE exhausted having spent

everything youre currently organising is flexible

Playing hard to
live longer
V
IGOROUS exercise the
kind that makes you
sweat, get red in the face
and breathe hard may
be better than moderate exercise
when it comes to living longer,
researchers said recently.
The study by Australian
researchers is based on more
than 200,000 adults over age 45,
and is published in the Journal of
the American Medical
Association (JAMA) Internal
Medicine.
The study participants were
followed for more than six years.
Those who did jogging,
aerobics or competitive tennis
vigorous exercise for 30% of
their weekly workouts had a
mortality rate that was 9% to 13%
lower than those who did
moderate exercise, like
swimming, social tennis, or
household chores.
The benefits of vigorous
activity applied to men and
women of all ages, and were
independent of the total amount
of time spent being active, said
lead author Klaus Gebel from
James Cook Universitys Centre
for Chronic Disease Prevention.
The results indicate that
whether or not you are obese,
and whether or not you have
heart disease or diabetes, if you
can manage some vigorous
activity, it could offer significant

physically fit.
Researchers reviewed more
than 1,200 cases of sudden cardiac
arrest when the heart stops
beating due to an electrical
disturbance in the organ that stops
vital blood flow in men and
women aged 35 to 65.
Only 5% of the cases involved
occurred during exercise such as
running, basketball or biking.
In two-thirds of the cases,
patients had a previously
documented cardiovascular
disease or symptoms before the
sudden cardiac arrest.
Our study findings reinforce
the idea of the high-benefit, lowrisk nature of exercise in middle
age and emphasise the importance
of education to maximise safety,
particularly as the population ages
and more baby boomers
increasingly take part in sports
activities to prolong their lives,
said senior author Sumeet Chugh,
who is the associate director for

Angeles, California. AFP

ITS not that youve been putting
off certain tasks because their
nature was so unclear, you didnt know where

Jan 20 Feb 17
SINCE early in the month, you
have had to deal with a steady
endless diet of family and domestic obligations.
While some were a delight, others were pure
duty that needed doing. Still, now that youre
able to think about other matters, you can begin
planning certain activities that once seemed
only a distant dream.
Feb 18 March 19
FOR ages, youve intended to
turn plans for improvements on
the domestic front into action.
While youre hoping the moment has come,
your time is best invested in untangling confusion
involving your resources, that is, your ideas,

everything else will fall into place.

Fist pumps and roars as
Tiger turns back clock
THE ferocious fist pump was back and the
roars echoed around Augusta National once
again for Tiger Woods, who turned back the
clock during his first nine in the third round
of the Masters yesterday.
Woods, returning from a two-month hiatus from competition, and a two-year absence
from Augusta due to back surgery last year,
was his old self in a rousing, four-under-par
charge in his first nine holes that took him to
six-under.
The 39-year-old American was hitting
pin-seeking approach shots that gave him
tap-ins for birdies, and chipped up close for
other chances to the delight of his huge
gallery.
The four-times Masters winner ran off
three successive birdies from the second hole
in a charge reminiscent of the heyday of the
14-times major champion. He had four birdies without a bogey on the front side.
Im starting to get my feel back, my
distance control on my shots, said Woods,
who had two more birdies and two bogeys
on the back nine to post 68 for a 210 total,
10 shots off the pace.
I missed a couple of shorties on six and
seven, and I had my chances to make this a
really special round today, said Woods, who
bogeyed the last after hitting into trees on

Lewandowski
double helps
Bayern brush off
injury woes
ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI scored twice as
injury-hit Bayern Munich romped to a 3-0 league
win over Eintracht Frankfurt yesterday ahead
of their Champions League quarterfinal at
Porto.
Despite having only four fit players on the
bench, Bayern dominated at Munichs Allianz
Arena and are three wins from claiming a third
straight German league title.
Lewandowski, the Bundesligas top-scorer
last season, now has 16 goals for the season
and is third in the current rankings.
Frankfurt were missing the leagues top
scorer with Alexander Meier, who has 19 goals
in 26 matches, out with a knee injury.
Im very proud, we dominated and played
well, said Bayern coach Pep Guardiola, who
has described their injury list as critical.
I hope no one else gets injured now against
Porto.
Second-placed Wolfsburg remain ten points
behind Bayern and on course for the Champions League next season after their 2-0
win at 10-man Hamburg.
Goals either side of halftime by
defensive midfielder Josuha
Guilavogui and right winger
Daniel Caligiuri sealed Wolves
win.
Gladbach picked up their
fourth straight league win with
an impressive 3-1 victory over
Borussia Dortmund.
Tenth-placed
Dortmund
went behind after just 29 seconds as Patrick Herrmanns
shot was blocked by Borussias Roman Weidenfeller,
but Sweden left-ack
Oscar Wendt slammed
home the parry.
Brazilian
forward
Raffel addded their
second on 32 minutes
before Norways Havard Nordveit fired home
when left unmarked at the far post with 67
minutes gone before Ilkay Gundogan pulled a
late goal back for Dortmund.
Gladbach deserved the victory, a start like
that is the worst case scenario, said Dortmund
coach Jurgen Klopp.
Then we had to get back in the game
against an opponent who are extremely good
at counter-attacking. AFP

Sherwood.
Villa are now on the verge of
preserving their top-flight status but
Sherwood, whose side arent involved in
league action next weekend because of
their FA Cup semifinal with Liverpool at
Wembley, were far from safe.
I dont know how much well need,
he added. Were just going to enjoy the
semifinal next weekend and we will
concentrate on that.
Villa were full value for their victory
in north London thanks to Bentekes
35th-minute headed winner.
The only sour note for Villa was the
red card shown to Carlos Sanchez deep
into stoppage time for two bookable
offence that means the Colombia
midfielder will now miss the FA Cup
semifinal.
Meanwhile Ciaran Clark (knee) and
Agbonlahor (hamstring), who limped
off, are injury doubts for the Wembley
showdown.
Tottenham looked laboured and the
end of the season seemingly cannot
come quickly enough for a side now
managed by Mauricio Pochettino.
The former Southampton supremo
wrote off Spurss chances of making the
top four and securing a place in the
Champions League after they lost at
home to Villa for the first time since
2008.
Now the best Tottenham can hope
for, it appears, is another Europa League
spot and manager Pochettino said: Its
difficult to fight for the top four, if you
saw the last two games. We need to be
realistic now.
We need to increase a lot our
performance. Its not easy. We are in a
position where we need to win all points
(available), the Argentinian added.
