If your baby is born in a hospital, the test should be done before you go home
and no later than 7 days of age. A second screening should be done when your
baby is between 2-6 weeks of age.
Newborn Screening
What diseases are screened for?
All newborns are screened for
the following serious diseases or conditions:
¤ Hypothyroidism
¤ Phenylketonuria
¤ Galactosemia
¤ Maple Syrup Urine Disease
¤ Biotinidase Deficiency
¤ Hemoglobinopathies (Sickle Cell Disease)
If your baby’s newborn screening test is abnormal, your doctor will call you and
ask you to have the baby get another test. This does not necessarily mean your
baby has a disease. But if you are asked to have your baby retested, please do
it quickly so that the results can be obtained as soon as possible and treatment
started if it is needed.
Each of these diseases is treated differently; some are treated with a special diet,
others with hormones or medicine. Remember, babies treated early have the best
chance to grow and develop normally.
Si Ud. no

There is an easy way to find out. It is possible with a hearing screening test. Most
babies will get this test before they leave the hospital. If you aren’t sure if your
baby had one, ask your doctor.
The hearing test is easy, fast, gentle and safe. A machine sends a soft sound to
your baby’s ears and records invisible responses. You will be told if your baby
passed the test or needs more tests.

Baby shots begin at birth! Ask your doctor or nurse to get your baby started
right away.
It takes more than one! Baby shots are given in a series. The shots start
when your baby is born. By age two, he/she will be almost finished. If your baby
misses a shot, you do not need to start over, just go back to your doctor for
the next shot.
Baby Shots
24
Your child needs at least six shot visits by age 2. Your baby is counting on you.
Keep records! Be sure to get a shot record from your doctor, bring it to each
visit and have it filled out for each shot. You will need to show this record when
your child goes to day care or school.
What does it cost? If cost is a problem, your baby can still get shots. Call
your doctor, nurse or county health department and ask about their low-cost or
free baby shots. Or call Oregon SafeNet at 1-800-SAFENET or 503-988-5858 (in

Diphtheria affects the throat and nose, making it hard to breathe. Severe cases

boca abajo .
Back to Sleep
One of the most important things you can do to help reduce the risk of SIDS is
to put your baby on his or her back to sleep. Do this when your baby is being put
down for a nap or to bed for the night. However be sure to have the baby in other
positions when awake such as supervised tummy time.
Your baby can be placed on his or her side. Side position does not provide as
much protection against SIDS as back sleeping, but it is much better than placing
your baby on his or her tummy. If you choose to use the side sleep position,
make sure your baby’s lower arm is forward to stop him or her from rolling over
onto the stomach.
Back to Sleep
Other Things You Can Do to Help Reduce the Risk of SIDS
¤ Bedding. Make sure that your baby sleeps on a firm mattress or other firm
surface. Don’t use fluffy blankets or comforters under the baby. Don’t let the
baby sleep on a waterbed, sheepskin, or other soft materials. Don’t place soft
stuffed toys or pillows in the crib with him or her.
¤ Temperature. The temperature in your baby’s
room should feel comfortable to you.
¤ Smoke-Free Home. No one should smoke around
your baby. Babies and young children exposed to
smoke have more colds and other diseases, as well
as an increased risk of SIDS.
¤ Breastfeeding. You should consider breastfeeding
your baby. Breast milk helps to keep your baby
healthy.
Enjoy your baby! Remember, most babies are born healthy and most stay that way.
Don’t let the fear of SIDS spoil your enjoyment of having a new baby. If you have
any questions about your baby’s sleep position or health, talk to your doctor or
nurse.

2. Listen
What does the child care setting sound like? Do voices sound cheerful and patient?
If it’s too quiet, there may not be enough activity. Too much noise means lack
of control.
3. Count
Count the number of children and staff in each group. A small number of children
per adult is especially important when caring for groups of young children and
Child Care
babies.
4. Ask
Ask about the knowledge of the people who will be caring for your child. Quality
caregivers are happy to have you ask these questions and are always learning more
about teaching and caring for children. If you are breastfeeding, ask the child care
provider how they will support your continued breastfeeding.
5. Be informed
Find out about the efforts in your community to improve the quality of child care
and education. Is your caregiver involved in those activities? How can you help?
These steps are only the beginning. Gather as much information as possible to help
you find the best care for your child. For more information, call the Oregon Child
Care Resource and Referral Network at 1-800-342-6712.

Each month about 200 new mothers throughout the state are randomly chosen
from the Oregon Birth Certificate Registry and are asked to complete the survey.
The PRAMS survey asks new mothers questions about health, behavior, social,
and financial issues. The Oregon Department of Human Services will use the
answers to help plan for healthier mothers, babies - and families. Because of
the small number of mothers picked, it is really important to have everyone’s
answers. Every pregnancy is different. To get a better overall picture of the health
of mothers and babies in Oregon, we need each mother to answer the questions.
Although some of the questions don’t seem related to health care, many things in a
mother’s life may affect her pregnancy. These questions try to get the best picture
of the new mother’s health care and things that happened to her before, during,
PRAMS
and after her pregnancy.
