British and American Literature

REFLECTION
Today is a first period of British and American Literature class. To
help us get acquainted with everyone, the professor asked us to go
around and get to know some students by asking them about some
things. One of them, I am greatly impressed by Nguyen Ngoc Mai. The
same as me, she is 19 years old and just a sophomore, but her major is
English Teaching, mine is Business English. As you know, in Hoa Sen
University, British and American Literature is for juniors or seniors, but we
chose this class for this course. I know we are too immature to register it,
but I and Mai will attempt with all our strength as Literature is not
absolutely hard and difficult, Literature simply needs a passion and love.
Mai is a pretty girl. I like her because she is very open, and
humorous. At first, I thought she was unsociable, secretive because she
has sad eyes and doesnt talk much in class before. However, when
becoming more friendly, she talks with me a lot about literature, she said
she like reading foreign novels and stories, especially, she loves Marc Levy
and his writings. Since literature is mostly long writings and involves many
words, I think people loving literature is intellectual. Therefore, I guess she
is quite scrupulous, calm, intellectual, and persevering.
Otherwise, we talked about the advantages of studying Literature
and I agreed with her ideas. Firstly, studying literature helps us enrich our
knowledge, obviously, the more we read, the more we know. Many people
think that literature means words. Yes! They are not wrong but the person
who reads as much as possible is smart and intelligent. Secondly, I agree
that British and American Literature can help us improve vocabulary,
reading and writing skills. When you reading stories, there is absolutely
many new words which you have to face, this helps your vocabulary is
improved a lot. Two advantages she mentioned are very clear and logical.
Moreover, I think that reading many stories help us know how to find out
the main idea of a story. Literature asks us to analyze, compare, classify
from evidence in a story, so I am sure that we will greatly improve our
reasoning faculty. As you see, there are many advantages of studying

literature, so both I and Mai are very excited about learning this subject in
this course.
The conversation was not too long but we talked actively and shared
lots of information to each other. I hope we are cooperative and
enthusiastic other through the course.
