Low-frequency Survey to go Ahead

We plan to acquire a seismic survey using low-frequency geophones this Spring.
As mentioned in the December newsletter, a poll at the Sponsors Meeting indicated
support for proceeding with this test. The objective of the survey is to use 2 Hz
geophones to recover low frequencies in the field to broaden the signal bandwidth.
This has implications for seismic processing from statics through inversion. The
goal, as always, is to make a better seismic picture.
There are several concerns to be addressed, including geophone response, frequency fidelity of the recording system, and low-frequency noise such as groundroll.
The data will likely be recorded using the Geo-X Systems Ltd. ARAM 24-bit
recording system and Mark L-4A geophones. There are 38 vertical and 76
horizontal of these 2 Hz geophones available through the Geological Survey of
Canada. We need to locate enough receivers for 200 stations. If you know of any
type of low-frequency geophones which may be available, please give us a call.
We are still considering the location, and are looking for a good data area with
minimal groundroll. One option is to acquire the survey in the same area as the 3C3D survey (see below). The data could then be used to assist in determining
optimum acquisition parameters for the 3C-3D survey planned for later in the year.

3C-3D Seismic Survey Proposals

Please send us
your suggestions for possible locations
of this survey.

The proposal to acquire a 3C-3D seismic survey received very strong support from
our sponsors. There was somewhat more interest in clastics than carbonates.
We're very excited about 3-D P-SV images and their use in exploration. We are
planning to conduct this survey as a participation survey (group shoot) in
conjunction with John Boyd of Boyd Exploration Consultants. Areas which have
been proposed thus far are:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Halkirk: existing 3-D surveys; Lower Mannville channel sands play.

Suffield: existing 3-D surveys and VSPs; channel sands play.
Caroline: Swan Hills carbonate bank edge; identify porosity and lithology.
Roseray, Sask: sandstone/shale edge delineation.

We would like to conduct this survey in 1995 and are requesting your preference
regarding its location. The area should have good quality seismic data and S-wave
velocity control (full-waveform logs, VSPs). We also want to tackle a problem
which has not been solved by P-P data alone. We will continue to develop the
concept and distribute a description of the best two or three proposals amongst our
sponsorship for further discussion.

Happy new year! We're starting 1995 with a new design for this newsletter. We
are also looking into the best way to send the CREWES NEWS electronically,
although we'll continue to fax copies as needed. If you have any suggestions on
delivery or content please let me know. Sue Miller, Editor.

Additional Sponsors
We are very pleased to welcome two new sponsors to CREWES:
Conoco Inc. of Ponca City, Oklahoma, is back onboard and will be represented
by Dr. Robert J. Corbin.
Talisman Energy Inc. of Calgary has also joined the Project. Mr. Gary Billings
will be the CREWES representative.
This brings our total sponsorship to 29. Our thanks to all of you for your continued
support.

New Grad Student

Kangan Fang joined us in January to begin graduate studies in geophysics under
the supervision of Dr. Jim Brown. Kangan received his B.Sc. from the East
China Petroleum Institute in Dongying and his M.Sc. from the Beijing School
of ECPI. Before coming to Canada he taught geophysics at the Petroleum
University in Beijing. Kangan has taken the English name Ken, which we should
be able to pronounce correctly!

1995 Annual Sponsors Meeting

We have booked the 7th Annual Sponsors Meeting for November 19-21, 1995,
at the Lodge at Kananaskis. The ice breaker on Sunday evening will be followed
by technical presentations on Monday and Tuesday. So mark these days on your
calendar and plan to join us for some good science in a spectacular mountain
setting.
