QUESTION 1
The Figure Q1 below shows beam AB fully restrained along its length and has stiff
bearing of 75mm at the supports. The beam supports a secondary beam at the centre of its
length. The characteristic loads acting on the beams are as shown. Design beam AB using
Grade S275 steel. The secondary beam is supported by a bearing plate which has 65 mm
stiff bearing length on the top flange of the beam.
By using UB 457 x 191 x 89 kg/m steel to resist the load from the slab and the secondary
beam. Check the adequacy of the beam size to resist the load against:

QUESTION 2
a) Calculate whether the section of column selected in Figure Q2 which has a tie at
its center height provides positional restraint for buckling about the y-y axis. The
column is pin jointed at both ends about x-x and y-y axes. Assume the steel grade
use to be S275.

QUESTION 3
Figure Q3 shows a typical truss of a roof structure. The truss is supported by a column at
points D and H. All elements consist of a single angle grade S275. The connection at
every node uses gusset plate consist of at least one standard bolts grade 4.6, 16mm

QUESTION 4
A beam section is connected to the flange of a column 305 x 305 x 137 UC, as shown in
Figure Q4 below. The beam is welded to an end plate 15mm thickness, and consequently
the plate is bolted to the flange of the column using 8 bolts 25mm diameter, Grade 4.6. A
load P 225kN is applied at an eccentricity of 255 mm from the flange.
i)
Determine whether the bolted connection between the end plate and the
column flange is safe to carry the applied load.

ii)
Determine the size of the weld required for the connection between the
beam and the plate to carry the applied load safely.
