Lesson Summary:
My students will be exploring words to help them learn to read and to pronounce certain words. The students
will repeat the words so they understand how to pronounce them and get a better understanding of what they
mean. We will be writing words down for practice, so students will understand different letters and the
difference between upper case letters and lower case letters.
Estimated Duration:
This lesson plan will take place in 2 days consisting of 50 minute increments.

Commentary: I plan on using flashcards to get the children interested in learning the words. I will also be
using online games to get the students interested in learning different words and their meanings. The students
will write words down on paper given to them and use different colors to help excite them when writing out the
words they learn.

Instructional Procedures:

Day 1:
First 10 minutes I will get the students prepped with necessary supplies they will be using for lesson. The
second ten minutes I will go over words I want the children to learn from a list of words that I put together for
the lesson. The next 30 minutes will be spent teaching the students different words and what they mean. This
will also include activities that I have planned for the students to learn and write out.

Day 2:
First 10 minutes will consist of prepping the students with supplies needed for that days lesson plan. The next
20 minutes will consist of using flashcards to interest the students in learning new words and the meaning of
the words. I will also incorporate pictures to the words so the children will have a better understanding of what
the words mean. The next 20 minutes will consist of using the internet for online word games to help the
students understand and have fun while learning words, the spelling and their meaning.

Pre-Assessment:
To understand what children may already know about words or certain words, I will play a game with them
using the words and see just what they may know about the words. If they understand some of the words this
will help me review what they know and spend less time on those words, so I can focus on the words they do
not know.

Scoring Guidelines:
I will be using observation to observe the students by watching what they may know about certain
words and their meanings. I will score them on how well they know them and how well they know the
meaning to each of the words. I will use stickers as a way of assessing the students on how well they
know the words.
Post-Assessment:
I will be handing out lined paper to the children and have them write words down that I hold flashcards up for.
The flashcards will consist of a picture and the word of the picture. I will hold up only the picture and have the
children write out what they think the picture is. I will then collect the papers to see if they learned the lesson I
was trying to teach them for the day.
Scoring Guidelines:
I will Score the students by the amount of words they got right from the flashcards that I hold up. I will
use a number to represent this score and apply it to a percentage as a grade.
Differentiated Instructional Support
For the students who pick up on certain words faster than other students, I will present a game to them as a
challenge for them to understand the words meanings. I may also implement a game for them to use online that
will help them identify the meaning of the word and the words spelling.
For students who are struggling with certain words or maybe even all the words, I will present them with their
own flashcards with the words on back and even implement online games to help them learn and sound out
words with their meanings.

Extension
For students to get a better understanding of words and their meanings, I will provide certain links to websites
that will help them learn words and vocabulary. A couple of the links are : www.vocabulary.co.il ,
www.jumpstart.com, www.ixl.com

Homework Options and Home Connections I would give students practice worksheets with word pictures to
help them learn the words I want them to learn. I would encourage parents to help guide their children when
they are doing their homework to help them if they seem to struggle. I would encourage parents to sound out
the word after the children say what the word is, so the child can repeat the word back to the parent as a way to
learn what the word is.

Interdisciplinary Connections
Language Arts: This can connect with English by using pictures to help children learn words. Pictures are a
great way to help a child understand the word they are trying to say and spell. Pictures make words come alive
and can be a great visual presentation for the student.
Science: This can connect to English by creating experiments with words to teach the students. I can use
different word formulas as a science formula would be taught to use as a display of words to teach the students
what words are.
