ZARKS ANGELS ..NOW

THERE ARE TWO!!!

McCARTHYS BARBER SHOP AND HAIR SALON located at 118C Broad Street in Schuylerville,
NY has expanded.
As many of you know, Shelly Squires has been cutting hair in the Schuylerville area for over 28 years.
She has been joined by her daughter, Erika Squires
Cronin. Erika attended the Paul Mitchell School of
Hair and worked at Rumors Hair Salon in Latham before joining Shelly in Schuylerville.
Erika brings another dimension to the salon, in that,
she does hair coloring, foiling, highlights and styling.
She and Shelly continue to provide hair cuts to men,
women and children.
It is now possible to make appointments, and walkins are still welcome. In general, their hours are Tuesday-Friday 8:30am-5pm. Thursdays they stay open
until 8pm. Saturday they are open 8am-5pm. They
also will make Sunday appointments.
McCarthys offers some of the very best hair styling
and conditioning products available. They include Paul
Mitchell, , Baco, and Scruples. They even offer for
sale many of the Scruples products. Shelly says
Scruples products are very good because they offer
versatility and reasonable prices.
In the next couple of weeks the facade of 118C Broad
Street will be under construction. The salon will remain open..just look for the barber pole.
You may call for appointments at 518-695-5293

FUNDS NEEDED FOR ELECTRICAL UPGRADE @ The

North River United Methodist Church, which is seeking donations for the Let There Be Light campaign to update the electrical system in the 168 year old church building. The North River
United Methodist Church was founded in 1847 in the hamlet of
North River and is the second oldest church located in the Town
of Johnsburg. According to Amy Sabattis member of the church
and current trustee We have had some success in raising funds
through car washes and bake sales and we have had a few generous donations but we are still lacking the funding to complete
the project. The fund-raising committee is looking for grants from
foundations, too, but most private foundations say no churches.
So, we have hit social media by using the site GoFundMe. The
site will display our campaign but only when we hit the $500.00
mark. When we hit that mark our campaign will be posted for the
whole world to see and the potential for donations is much greater.
If you would like to contribute to this fundraiser go to http://
www.gofundme.com/lit3z4 or call Amy Sabattis at 518-251-2519.

generations of farming knowledge, small town infrastructure and
a whole landscape. Filmed over the course of two-years, Grazers: A Cooperative Story follows a group of fiercely independent
farmers in upstate New York as they create a beef cooperative
to hold on to their failing farms. Directed by documentary veterans Lisa F. Jackson and Sarah Teale, Grazers explores the demise of the family farm and rural landscape and the emergence
of a new, local food movement that links country and city in an
effort to improve food quality and retain local farms. Pre-Registration is encouraged. Please call 518-885-8995 to register. Visit

Written by Rachel Essaff Maher

Attending my oldest sons Little League practice on a beautiful spring
day, everything was wonderful. Andy was out on the field, tossing the
ball back and forth with another boy. Then he was trotting off to the
batting cage with an Assistant Coach. He was giving it his all, a drastic improvement over his days on the instructional team last year and
the year before. Second grade has matured him. More importantly, we had been working on his coping skills since his diagnosis with Asperger Syndrome last summer. Living on what is referred to as the Autism Spectrum has been difficult for Andy. Before diagnosis, we struggled to understand why he behaved the way he sometimes does.
A bright child with a vast capacity for memorizing facts and a deep love of art and
language, Andy has always been a remarkable kid, but sometimes he has odd habits that
can be frightening and dangerous, such as eating non-food items like stones, bottle
wrappers, and, once, his cousins plastic hairclip.
With a grin on his face, Andy came racing toward where I sat on the bleachers. Mom,
I was just in the batting cage! I hit a home run! So much excitement this year, he has
hopes to become a great baseball player now. Out on the field, he hits the ball on the
third swing. He runs slowly to first base. Everything is perfectly fine . . . until the
groundskeeper starts up the riding mower. The noise shatters the melodic sound of
children at play. Nervously, I look to where Andy stands at shortstop. Sure enough, the
noise has changed his entire demeanor. On the bleachers, a woman stifles a laugh. Her
eyes are on my son.
I wish people understood Asperger or autism in general, that they could show sensitivity when a nearly eight year old boy eats a mouthful of red dirt or when he rubs it
between his fingers and into his hair. I wish they understood that he is really a smart
kid who just wants to feel the texture because the sense of touch becomes vitally
important when the man on the tractor drives by the field and overwhelms his auditory
sensitivity. He covers his ears. He looks pained because it hurts him. And it does
hurt imagine hearing the sound of a mower as though it were right inside of your ear,
amplified to a decibel that makes you flinch. That is how Andy hears the mower. And
he is not alone; autism is often associated with an increased sensitivity to sound. Many
children on the spectrum will cover their ears when a noise becomes too difficult for
them to bear.
Andy has learned to distract himself. This time, he used the red dirt of the baseball
diamond to take his mind off the sound. He is not trying to act out or live up to that
old saying, kids will be kids, when he acts this way. It has very little to do with
parenting, although I am often the target of glares and snarky comments from other
parents and bystanders. What it does have a lot to do with are synapse connections in
the brain, rapidly firing communications between the brain and the auditory senses. If
only they could understand that in social environments, he cannot always make sense
of his senses. He has to learn to control himself, his urges and sensitivities and I
trust that he will, in time because the urge to explore and to understand sensation is not
the same as the urge to misbehave. And if I yell at him to stand up or to spit out the red
dirt or to not lick the baseball bat, I would only call attention to someone who is uncomfortable with attention, who does not know how to act when people are staring.
After his next time at bat, I call him quietly to the fence and speak to him about responsibility. I remind him not to eat dirt, not to throw it, not to rub it into his hair. He looks
at the ground. Behind me, I hear people whispering. Inside me, my heart aches and
there is a lump in my throat I cannot seem to swallow. Im sorry, Mom. He says, Ill
try not to.
And he does try not to, instead appearing distracted for the rest of practice. And I
know that it must take every ounce of his self-control to not touch the alluring red dirt
beneath his feet. This practice ends with fried nerves and a tension headache that
lingers for hours, but I know that we will be back next weekend and we will try again.
Yes. We will because he told me today that he is going to be the best baseball
player in the history of the world and you know what? I believe him.

raise the animals and use the fiber. See the results of our year round
efforts ? from baby animals and soft shorn fleeces to luxurious yarn
and hand-crafted gifts, even cuts of lamb and Tuscan cheeses. All
this ? and a lovely springtime weekend on the farms. http://
