In a study released early last summer, researchers documented that women and men

across America have reported being harassed in public based on their gender or perceived sexual
orientation. This blog was created with one purpose in mind: to share information about street
harassment. It does not matter what kind of informationwhether it be statistics, objective
articles, or personal storiesas long as something is being done. The way I wanted to contribute
was to create a platform for further discussion and to produce an informational video to share on
social media sites. The hardest part of combating street harassment and catcalling is the lack of a
universal definition. This is where the importance of sharing comes in. One voice can only do so
much, but a multitude of voices with different experiences and backgrounds can create a shared
collective of ideas. An idea is powerful; once it infects the mind of one, it is almost impossible to
stop. The problem with this is that Too too many people argue semantics rather than whether or
not anyone should harass another person in public the first place. There are ideas flowing but
they arent the type to start movements, just arguments. The main defense for street harassment
is that the statements are complimentary, and that men (those primarily arguing this) have the
right to free speech;, and that in addition, those subjected to said compliments should be
appreciative and welcome the comments as a usual part of their lives.
Most people arguing Those against street harassment take to news articles, blog posts,
and soon-to-be viral videos to spread discuss their information experiences and viewpoints. In
order for them to successfully argue against some people street harassment supporters, emotional
appeals via actual experiences do not work they must use. Irrefutable irrefutable statistics are
necessary to combat any opposing point like thosethat are backed by reliable sources. This blog
started with a video because I felt like it could reach the widest audience.
The main One such source that I used for my statistics in my video was the a report made
in June of 2014. It is based off of a survey that was given to 2000 people all across the U.S., in
addition to interviews with ten focus groups. These groups had included marginalized people
that did not fit into the broader categories. Some of the statistics from This this study found that
I included in my video were:

65% of women and 25% of men reported being publicly harassed at least once in
their lifetime.

Formatted: Bulleted + Level: 1 + Aligned at: 0.75" +

Indent at: 1"

More than half of the women in the survey were verbally harassed while just
under half experienced physically aggressive harassment.

Of the men harassed, more LGBQ-identified males were harassed than straight
males.

The numbers go on and on statistics dont end there but I thought that more people were more
likely to watch and share a video than they were to read an article and pass it along. Additionally,
aA video also reaches a broader audience than articles the other medium because it can be on all
forms of social media and permeate between educational boundaries. A statistically based article
might be limited to a scientific/ educational audience or those immediately affected by the topic.
That source also led to other sources with interpretations of the data and graphs to illustrate it.
This was one of the reasons why this blog came to be. I wanted a place to put together everything
I learned and also wanted to create a platform for others to initiate discussions and share their
thoughts or experiences create multiple types of works in attempt to reach nearly everyone that
will listen or read. I wanted a safe place for people to reach a common goal: the end of street
harassment. This blog platform may just be starting out but there are many others like it. My
blog has a few pages at the top to lead to different sections of it aid in navigation, from street
harassment in the media to videos of my creation. After spending 12 hours shooting the my first
stop motion on this topic and another 3 to compile it into a video, I decided I wanted to develop
my skills and turn other peoplespeoples stories into stop motion videos. to reach even larger
audiences than they already do on this popular blogging platform This will allow an individuals
story to reach an infinitely larger group of people than before. I'll continue to post graphs,
articles, and art in addition to videos and stories so that every person blog type on Tumblr can
see and maybe possibly share to with their followers, who can share to another social media site.
I want the snowball to start rolling until so that enough people vocalize their concerns and
generate enough power to really make a change. I might be the one that created this blog, but you
and anyone else reading it will be the ones to help it grow. I have only one question left: what
will you do to #EndStreetHarassment?
