Spain continued its dominance in the global sugar cane trade. In 2014, Spain exported
11.8 kt of sugar cane totaling $4.3M, 0.1% under the previous year. Its primary trading
partner was Italy, where it supplied 19.6% of its total sugar cane exports in value terms,
accounting for 99% of Italian total imports.
Overall, the global sugar cane trade reached $18.5M, with a CAGR of 1% from 2012 to
2014. In physical terms, it expanded to 37.6 kt in 2014 after a significant 20% drop in
2012.
In 2014, Switzerland (21%), Thailand (19%), Spain (10%), Egypt (7%) and the Czech
Republic (6%) were the leading destinations of sugar cane imports, together making up
63% of global imports. The share of Spain increased significantly (+5 percentage points);
the shares of the other leading countries also illustrated positive dynamics.
Spain and Algeria were the main global suppliers of sugar cane in 2014 with a combined
share of 43% of global exports. Algeria, however, was the fastest growing exporter from
2012 to 2014, increasing its exports by an astounding 76% per year. With this rapid
ascent, Algeria more than tripled its position in the global export structure, from 6% in
2012 to 19% in 2014.
