MAY 2015
Hello Everybody.
I'm Gina, your new co-editor. Firstly I would like to thank Steve for his patient tuition
and I think it is fair to say that over the past few months we have become close to
blows! Haha.
I think it is quite apt that I have been given one rein and the front cover (Wayland
Wood) in this my very favourite month of May when all the hints and promises of
Spring finally burst forth in one huge surge of colour and energy , fizzing us into new
beginnings of another year of growth and yield. Alas for some, 'new beginnings' have
been thrust upon then causing fear and uncertainty and we keep them in our love
and thoughts.
Spring 2015 will never be repeated, so let us embrace it and use it well.Enjoy.
Gina

The ways in which we communicate with one another are constantly changing and
evolving. It has become so complicated. Take a step back into the past... Offices had
typing pools (what are they?) and typewriters, now obsolete, once ruled the world!
Fountain pens and ink bottles aside, a handwritten personal letter is now a rarity
where once it was the only way to exchange views and information. What will
constitute the archive of the future, I wonder? Not a packet of love letters tied with
ribbon in the bottom of a drawer... Letters seem to becoming obsolete too as
technology allows ever more immediate forms of communication and picture sharing
to become the norm.
However, a recent anthology: Letters of Note, edited by Shaun Usher, has become
a best seller; subtitled Correspondence deserving a wider audience it celebrates
the power of letter writing and includes hugely varied treasures such as Leonardo da
Vinci's job application letter, a pop star's letter of advice to a troubled fan and Queen
Elizabeth II's recipe for drop scones sent to President Eisenhower.
There is, however, one method of communication that is perennially popular: to 'say
it with flowers!' Whether it's thank you, congratulations, commiserations, birthday
greetings - or any other occasion, flowers do it best of all. April showers bring forth
May flowers it is said so true, everywhere we look we can see the natural beauty of
flowers with their promise of sunny days ahead. The Rose of England will have been
in our minds as we recently celebrated St. George's Day and of course, the Blessed
Virgin Mary, mother of Our Lord Jesus is sometimes known as the 'mystic rose'. We
have our Easter tradition of lilies of remembrance for our loved ones at this time of
year, and the flowers in our churches look particularly beautiful in Eastertide, admired
by all who visit our churches. We are hugely grateful for the commitment of the
talented and creative flower arrangers who decorate our churches throughout the
year: thank you to you all.
So perhaps we can take time this May to show someone we care about that we are
thinking of them by being rebelliously counter-cultural and sending them a
handwritten letter; or perhaps it's the right time of year - by saying it with flowers?

Our 'Love of Books' reading initiative got off to a fantastic start last term ! The children
have opportunities to read in pairs, groups or individually every day during library
sessions or when carrying out topic research. Many children now also read every night
at home and their success has been celebrated with certificates and books, kindly
purchased by our school PTA. Well done everyone.

Twenty three members and one prospective member, Jackie, attended the Jubilee
Hall for our April meeting.
After drawing our attention to the WI Centenary Diary, which members are
contributing to throughout this special year, our President, Penny, introduced our
speaker for the evening, our very own Andrea Lorriman.
Andrea told us that she grew up in Yorkshire and from an early age was encouraged
to explore the countryside and beyond, with her parents. After she met and married
Ken, a kindred spirit, they moved to Zambia where Ken was working. From there
they explored the Victoria Falls, South Africa etc. On returning to England many
more adventurous holidays followed. Andrea told us many stories of her visits to
Denmark, Ireland, Canada (when she visited Stoney Creek, which was where the
first ever WI group was held in 1897), Thailand, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and
Australia, to name but a few. It was a wonderful account and thoroughly enjoyed by
us all.
After tasty refreshments provided by Marion and Margaret Neal, Penny gave us
details of several events happening over the next few months. She presented
birthday roses to Elaine, Eileen and Marion. Raffle winners were Valerie, Florence
and Beryl and the competition winner for a holiday souvenir was won by Penny,
Maureen and Gillian.
In closing the meeting, Penny told us that the oak tree planted in the Church yard
some years ago has become badly mishapen and encroaching on one or two graves,
therefore, this has been removed and replaced by a new tree situated just a couple
of feet from the previous one.

Gayton Evergreens
The members had a very good lunch at our March meeting held in the Gayton
Jubilee Hall; sitting down to a meal of Bangers, Mash and peas, followed by homemade apple pie and custard. There was plenty of sausages and pie so 'seconds' of
both were eagerly accepted.
The football tote was played and the raffle drawn bringing an end to a lovely
afternoon.
On April 15th the Evergreens were in Hunstanton at the Princess Theatre for the
matinee performance of 'Singing for Victory' Everyone enjoyed the songs of Vera
Lynn which were performed by an excellent cast of six, telling the story of Vera from
the beginning of her career and throughout the war years, and what her songs
meant to loved ones apart during those years. It was a show well worth seeing.
May 20th the Evergreens will meet in the Gayton Jubilee Hall at 2-30pm and will be
entertained by singer/guitarist Patsy Rose. Non Members welcome.
June 17th is the date for the coach outing to Aylesham where we shall board the Burr
Valley train for Wroxham for a boat trip on the Broads . Coach pick up Gayton 10am.

Gaytons Footpaths
In a recent speech Henry Bellingham M.P. endorsed the wisdom of Tip
O'Neill former Speaker of the United States Houses of Representatives who
was closely associated with the phrase all politics is local. What Mr O'Neil
meant was that what matters to people are not just issues of national
importance but also the ability of their elected representatives to understand
and influence the issues of everyday concern to their constituents. This
struck a chord and when Mr Bellingham called in to discuss constituency
issues we talked about the mundane but important issue of dog fouling on
Gayton's paths and footpaths. This is a matter of particular concern to
Gayton Parish Council and so on their behalf and Mr Bellingham's, could dog
owners PLEASE clear up after their pets our village footpaths are heavily
used not least by schoolchildren and the elderly and it is unpleasant and
upsetting to be confronted with dog mess on the paths. PLEASE respect our
village and clear up after your pets.
Mr Bellingham did more than talk about the issue, as the photo shows he got
to work helping me clear around an overgrown dog bin on Back Street that
should help dog owners clear up after their pets.

QEH MATTERS
Remember the Stroke Awareness event at the QEH on May 7th at 7.00pm. This is
being held in conjunction with the Stroke Association. There will be talks from
professionals and information for carers. Car parking will be free on the bus stop car
park and you will be directed from there.
Governors continue to take part in mock CQC inspections where we look at various
wards or departments from the patient's point of view. We talk to patients and staff,
inspect paperwork and the environment and observe what is happening in the area.
The reports are discussed at the council and board meetings. This is in preparation
for the next official CQC which is due soon.
The Trust has employed a 'Front of House' receptionist based with the volunteers at
the main entrance. She will be there between 8.30 and 17.30, Monday to Friday.
With access to the Trust's internal systems, she will be able to provide better
informed answers to the common questions asked by visitors, such as which ward
their family and friends are staying on. This is a good start but we are pressing to
have someone there for evenings and weekends as well.
The alterations to the footpath from the car park have taken much longer than
expected and the Trust apologises for the inconvenience it has caused.
The next Governors' Council meeting is on Tuesday 2nd June at 4.00pm; in the
Conference room at the QEH. Members of the public are warmly welcomed. Please
phone 01553 613142 if you wish to attend.

He said that grants may be available but they are unlikely to be high. He also
explained that if the organ isn't used regularly, even once it's repaired it is unlikely to
stay in good condition.
The church costs around 3000 per year to run. At the moment, because we don't
receive enough money from church activities and other support, we have to use
existing savings funds which had been built up over many years previously, to pay
the yearly running costs of the church.
If we were to mend the organ, this would practically wipe out the church funds. We
would be left with insufficient funds to maintain the building properly and the funds
currently used to keep the church running and open would be used up within a
couple of years.
We are under an obligation to keep the church open and have regular services for 10
years following our English Heritage grant for the building repairs. If we were to
repair the organ, we would not have the funds to do this.
Although we are aware, from previous village meetings, that the organ is important to
the village, we do not see how we can repair the organ and keep the church open for
the long term.
The organ deserves to be well looked after, properly repaired and played regularly.
Even if we were to repair it, it would still only be played once a year.
We feel that, having taken all the above into account, our only course of action is to
see if there is an organ enthusiast who is interested in taking the organ on and giving
it the care and attention it needs and deserves.
If we did this, we would have the funds to do the wood panelling and lime washing
and keep the church in repair and open for at least the number of years required by
English Heritage.
It must be remembered that before we do any of this, we have to obtain permission
from the Diocese.
As this is a quite a change, we would welcome your views. If anyone from the village
has any views on the above, or other ideas for solving the problems, please could
you write to either myself, at the address below or Rev Jane Holmes at The Rectory,
Gayton. We would be happy to meet up at the church with anyone who wanted to
discuss things further.
