THE SPECIAL GRAINS

SHRISTUTI SRIRAPU
8 YEARS

There was once a little village called Greenville. It was a very pleasant place. Huts were scattered all
over and trees towered over the friendly little people. There lived in the village, many animals. The
villagers and animals were fine friends.
There was fine amount of rainfall in Greenville and the crops grew quite well.

And then one day it became exceedingly hot and dry. The flowers wilted, and lakes and water in the
reservoirs dried up.
There was a heatwave in Greenville! It was so hot that people wanted to leave Greenville and go to the
neighboring village.

Now there was a very smart fox named Ronox. Ronox had a friend named Muddie . Muddie knew
everything about the earth, from the tips of the trees to what was in the depths of the sea.
I need your help. The village is extremely hot and there is no water. What can we do? Ronox asked.
Aah, take these to Farmer Kubnak and tell him to plant them. Oh, and by the way, he added "they do
not need water.
Ronox thanked him warmly and trotted off with the grains.

Ronox sat and ate his food greedily.

Farmer Kubnak ! he called. Please plant these seeds. No water needed" as Farmer Kubnak put on a
puzzled look.
Ronox walked off satisfied with his work.

The next day Farmer Kubnak got out of bed at the break of dawn. He walked to the field half asleep
and started sprinkling the seeds, 3 at a time and jogged off to take the chicken's eggs.
Muddie was watching from behind the trees and he chuckled and whispered, "Good work!!"

The next day, Farmer Kubnak was passing past and he noticed a small puddle.
Look!, he cried, Water! Water!
All the villagers rushed forward. Everybody in the village, from boys to Grandpas came stampeding
towards the field.

Ronox walked to the forest and called his friends. The leaves cracked beneath Ronox's feet.
Oh friends! Come along!! So they ran merrily to now what had become a pond.
Quench your thirst !! said Ronox.
Ronox how did you do this? Surely someone helped you said Rabbitta the Rabbit.
Yes of course, Muddie and Farmer Kubnak helped me.
Oh, ok, murmured Turtio the turtle.
And with that they were splashing water at each other and babbling off.

In the morning Farmer Kubnak saw a large waterbody.

"The puddle has grown so much. How did you do it?" everyone mumbled in agreement.
" I do not know" said Farmer Kubnak.
All the animals splashed and played and had fun.
The water is so cool, I love it ! said Ele the elephant.
All the animals splashed in agreement and played and played.

The people were rejoicing. The trees were greener than ever, flowers bloomed in every direction and
the wind was blowing. The pond had saved them.
All thanks to the special grains..
