CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Music is an art, because it is the expression of emotions, beliefs, and
human experiences through organized sound. Music in its humble beginnings
started from using woods, stones, bones, and other primitive materials to
create sound, imitate the nature and even to create music. Now, music
evolved from the primitive ways to organized and educated training of
music. In its evolution technology also evolved and its result were the
creation of electronics, computers, machines, and from these are the
keyboards, synthesizers, mixers, electric drums, and computers used in
composing and playing music in the field of music.
One of the huge improvements in the music industry is the usage of
computers to create music which we call computer-generated music. What
is computer-generated music? Well, there are many definitions of computergenerated music. According to Wisegeek (2011), computer-generated music
first, and most logically, is music created by, or composed with the
assistance of a, computer workstation or module. Computer- generated
music can be electronic musical instrument since it is common nowadays.
The computer is a good example since it can be categorized as the

instrument itself, and, since digital music recording has become the standard
replacement for analog magnetic tape recorders, computer-generated music,
is the product of these digital music production systems.
In addition to this, Wikipedia (2011), also states that computergenerated music as music composed by, or with extensive aid of a computer.
Although any music which uses computers in its composition or realization is
computer generated to some extent, the use of computer is now widespread
(in editing of pop songs, for instance) that the phrase computer-generated
music is generally used to mean kind of music which could not have been
created without using a computer. Computer-generated music can be
distinguished into two groups: music in which computer generated the score,
which could be performed by humans, and music which is both composed
and performed by computers.
Truly, music has evolved so much. It has been a part of us since the
dawn of man. In the time of man, technology also evolved and the results
were smart computers, robots, automated machines, and etc. Through the
creativity and intelligence of man, he combined technology and art and the
one of the result was computer-generated music. Since the dawn of
computers, the impossible became possible for us. We can make art from
computers and other technologies. The emergence of computer-generated
music is a huge success in the music industry in making music fast and
easier.

As researchers, we planned to create this study because we have

observed that the awareness and appreciation towards classical music is
slowly taken out from the consciousness of the people that was brought by
the effect of the popularity and dependency to create music through
computers.
