Written Response:
Describe your artistic/organizational experiences and accomplishments. What is your vision for the arts at
Duke and how you work towards it in your desired office? Please limit your response to one page, singlespaced.
I apologize in advance for the brevity of this response. I, unfortunately, just found your email about
my being recommended to apply in my junk mailbox. I think my most notable organization
experiences and accomplishments would be: (1) helping found a research group at my high school, and by
publishing research/presenting it at a conference, receiving a total of 25000 dollars to continue the
program, (2) founding a committee of students and teachers to assist the understaffed guidance
department at my high school with personalized educational paths to college (or whatever post-graduate
plans one aspired to), and (3) creating a student internship with the library, resulting in my becoming the
head intern, and organizing opportunities for other students, increasing library visits from 20 to 140/day
in one academic year by various means of outreach and activity -- saving the future of the library by
doing so. My most significant artistic achievement thus far is getting offered a 25000 dollar role in a nonunion, feature film.
To be blunt, my vision for the arts at Duke is much more grand than I ever think will be achieved, but we
surely can try. I wish to ultimately end on the same playing field as Yale and Columbia and USC, etc etc,
when it comes to the arts. I want to help harness all the unique, creative energy and intelligence on Dukes
campus, and give it a productive and worthy outlet so much so that people find that careers in the arts are
attainable and certainly worthy of, at least, our consideration and, optimistically, our lives. In a marketing
position, I could help direct the attention toward and shape the conversation of happenings, tools, and
resources. In a programming position, I could thoroughly define and flesh out my own and certainly
others aspirations for the program and work toward ways to make them realities.
